Abstract

The politicization of wages and social inequality in Nigeria has become a significant issue over the past decade. Although the African Union (AU) has issued various policies related to social justice and labour welfare, their impact on Nigeria's economic and social conditions remains a topic of debate. This study aims to analyze the role of the AU in responding to the politicization of wages and social inequality in Nigeria between 2012 and 2022. The findings reveal that while the AU has introduced policies to address social inequality and improve labour welfare, their implementation has been hindered by weak coordination with the Nigerian government, a lack of law enforcement, and domestic political interests. As a result, social protests persist, and social inequality continues to be a major issue in Nigeria. The study concludes that the AU needs to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and enforce stricter policies to more effectively address the politicization of wages. Keywords: African Union, Politicization of Wages, Social Inequality, Nigeria, Regional Organizations.

Abstract

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) of Kota Dumai plays a strategic role in facilitating trade cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia, particularly within the framework of complex interdependence, which reflects the economic interconnection between the two countries. This study aims to identify the obstacles faced by Kadin Dumai in enhancing bilateral trade relations and to analyze the strategies that can be implemented to overcome these challenges. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research examines trade regulations, bureaucratic factors, and infrastructure limitations that affect Kadin Dumai’s effectiveness in the dynamics of regional trade interdependence. The findings indicate that the main barriers include complex cross-border trade regulations, inefficient bureaucratic processes, and inadequate logistical infrastructure in Dumai City. Furthermore, asymmetric market information and the limited involvement of the private sector in trade policy formulation further complicate the complex interdependence between business actors in both countries. To address these challenges, strategies such as strengthening coordination between Kadin Dumai and central and regional governments, enhancing economic diplomacy through bilateral forums, and optimizing trade missions and exhibitions as instruments to strengthen cross-border economic connectivity are essential. Keywords: Kadin Dumai, complex interdependence, trade cooperation, trade barriers, bilateral relations, trade mission, trade exhibition.

Abstract

Indonesia actively utilized the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) Dubai from 2021 to 2024 as a strategic platform to promote its tourism sector in the Middle East and international markets. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf), aimed to revitalize tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic, increase tourist arrivals from the Middle East, and boost national foreign exchange. This article seeks to explore Indonesia’s strategy in promoting tourism through ATM during the 2021–2024 period. This qualitative study employs the theory of public diplomacy and uses literature review as the main data collection method. The findings reveal that Indonesia implemented varied strategies each year: a hybrid format in 2021; business-to-business (B2B) meetings in 2022; the promotion of super-priority destinations under the “Visit Indonesia Year 2023” campaign; and a 2024 collaboration with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to promote Jakarta. These efforts demonstrated that participation in ATM has positively contributed to increasing tourist visits and enhancing Indonesia's foreign exchange earnings. Abstract

This research analyzes identity politics in religion-based public policy in Malaysia as a case study in Southeast Asia. Using Fairclough's critical discourse analysis approach, this research explores how Malay-Islam is hegemonically positioned in the constitution and state practice through institutions such as Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) and the dual justice system. The findings show that this dominant discourse influences various sectors of public policy, especially education and law, which has implications for discrimination against non-Muslim minorities. The study also identifies the emergence of counter-discourses from civil society organizations that fight for pluralism and justice, although they are often silenced through recontextualization strategies by the state. This research contributes to the understanding of how identity politics operates in multicultural and multi-religious contexts, and its implications for public policy in the Southeast Asian region.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of the comfort women issue on diplomatic relations between South Korea and Japan. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method and is analyzed through the lens of historical constructivism developed by Duncan Bell, alongside Charles Tilly's theory of social movements. The study focuses on the period from 2015 to 2022, covering the dynamics following the 2015 Comfort Women Agreement. The findings indicate that the collective memory of the comfort women issue plays a critical role in fueling public resistance against Japan, as evidenced by social movements, boycotts of Japanese products, and domestic pressure on the South Korean government to reassess diplomatic and security cooperation. This study concludes that resolving the comfort women issue requires more than a legal-formal approach; it demands an empathetic and symbolic response that addresses the historical and moral dimensions of the problem. Abstract

Human trafficking is a complex issue that requires a strategic government response. This phenomenon is even more crucial in Cambodia, which acts as a country of origin, transit and destination. This study analyzes the Cambodian government's concrete steps at the national, bilateral, regional and multilateral scales. The research method is a descriptive qualitative approach based on document analysis. This research uses K.J Holsti's theory of international cooperation. The results of this study show Cambodia's commitment through strengthening the legal framework and ratification of international instruments (UNTOC, ILO, ACTIP) as well as the implications of the TSE Law in the national legal framework. Cambodia makes various domestic and international efforts through bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation. However, implementation is constrained by capacity gaps, inter-agency coordination and systematic corruption, requiring an integrated and sustainable approach to address the structural problems of combating human trafficking in Cambodia.
