Abstract

Political praxis in the digital media era often contains biases in understanding human dignity. This article wants to investigate whether the political logic in such an era contains certain concepts about humans that are implicit, hidden, or intentionally hidden. The theoretical framework of Shoshana Zuboff and Agus Sudibyo's thoughts on "Capital Surveillance" and "Digital Universe" is the reference used by the author to see to what extent the role of the use of digital technology and virtual spaces in political propaganda contains humanitarian biases and does not direct political goals on human dignity. The results of the author's observations and research show that political praxis in the digital media era has utilized humanitarian issues only for the sake of pragmatic and transactional electoral political interests. The author finds that human dignity in political practice in the digital media era is only an instrument, not a goal.

Abstract

The focus of this research examines technology as a means of human liberation from the perspective of Herbert Marcuse. This research aims to investigate and look at new technology, namely technology that leads to the goal of complete human development. The development of human dignity is the goal of technology because technology is a means of human liberation to achieve its fullness. Technology is not a means of domination in various areas of life. Researchers used descriptive qualitative methods and critical reading of texts. Based on critical reading of the text, the researcher analyzes and combines materials related to Herbert Marcuse's views on One Dimensional Man. The findings in this research are that Marcuse does not reject technology because of the close relationship between technology and human development. Although it cannot be denied that industrial society, with its technology, oppresses humans, it does not invite humans to return to the pre-industrial or pre-technical era. Instead, it continues to turn to the liberating capabilities of technology and industrialization.

Abstract

Abstract

The main focus of this research is to understand and examine the relationship between majority and minority groups in religious life in Indonesia. The author uses Levinas' philosophy of the face as a kind of analytical tool to explore and delve into this issue. The purpose of this paper is to reconstruct the relationship between majority and minority groups in Indonesia’s religious life through Levinas' thoughts, so that society can better understand religious coexistence amidst existing pluralism. The methodology used in this paper is library research. This paper finds that Emmanuel Levinas' concept of the philosophy of the face emphasizes the importance of the presence of “the Other” in human relationships. In Indonesia's religious life, this thought contributes to addressing the phenomenon of majority-minority relations that lead to radicalism, identity politics, terrorism, and the reduction of the presence of others, by stressing ethical responsibility in overcoming power relations. The philosophy of the face opens opportunities for humanistic dialogue, encourages respect for the Other, and fosters a harmonious religious life. Dialogue with people of different religions will increasingly enable individuals to better embrace pluralism. Moreover, its implementation in the Indonesian context does face challenges. Therefore, the thoughts of Hannah Arendt and Martin Buber can assist society in building a more inclusive and harmonious majority-minority relationship. In conclusion, Levinas' philosophy of the face serves as an inspiration to encourage ethical awareness, dialogue, and respect for “the Other” in Indonesia’s pluralistic society. This effort must also be supported by interdisciplinary approaches, incorporating thoughts from other philosophers and utilizing other sciences to address majority-minority issues in Indonesia.

Abstract

The focus of this paper explores the values of Pancasila in the local wisdom of the Topo Uma community in Porelea village, Kec. Pipikoro, Kab. Sigi, Central Sulawesi. Specifically the Raego Dance, this is a dance performed by men and women in a circular formation while reciting verses in the old Uma language. The purpose of this paper is to explore whether the assumption that the values of Pancasila in the local wisdom of the Indonesian people are truly rooted and especially internalized by the Topo Uma community. The method used in this research is qualitative, with a phenomenological philosophical approach from the perspective of Armada Riyanto, which is obtained from the book Local Wisdom ~ Pancasila: The Items of Indonesian Philosophy, as well as in his book Relationality and Methodology. This phenomenological philosophical perspective contributes a phenomenological interpretation to describe the experience and appreciation of the Topo Uma community. The findings in this research, the saying that the values of Pancasila are alive and rooted in the local wisdom of the community is not just a slogan. In particular, the first precept, it was permeated and lived in the life of the Topo Uma community even before the entry of Christianity there as a designation for entities that transcend or overcome, namely; Karampue Langi, Karampue Tana or Topehila Ngkarawe Topejadi.

Abstract

Javanese gamelan, a traditional musical ensemble deeply embedded in Javanese culture, serves as a profound symbol of harmony and spiritual values, reflecting principles such as balance, restraint, and tolerance. Historically integral to religious and ceremonial contexts, gamelan embodies a sacred medium through which the Javanese engage with the Divine, aligning with Mircea Eliade’s concept of hierophany—the manifestation of the sacred in the profane world. Despite its rich cultural and philosophical significance, contemporary shifts have led to a decline in gamelan’s popularity and its associated values, impacting cultural practices including the inculturation process within the Catholic Church among Javanese communities. This qualitative study, based on interviews, observations, and literature review, demonstrates that gamelan transcends mere musical function, offering a theological and cultural framework that can enhance Catholic liturgical music. Integrating gamelan into worship not only enriches faith expression but also fosters cultural identity and supports liturgical inculturation. The findings contribute to the discourse on cultural heritage preservation and religious adaptation by proposing a model that harmonises local artistic traditions with Christian worship, encouraging further interdisciplinary research and practical application.

Abstract

The focus of this writing explores the transformation towards an open society in the context of Indonesia based on Francis Fukuyama's perspective on liberalism. This research investigates the extent to which Fukuyama's perspective on liberalism can serve as a foundation for the transformation of Indonesian society. It is hoped that Fukuyama's thoughts on liberalism provide a critical insight into the relevance and contribution of these ideas to the transformation of Indonesian society. The implementation of liberal ideas in Indonesia, in my opinion, requires a lengthy process. Society continues to linger in a state of stagnation, feeling comfortable in their own complacency. The community remains shackled and bound, with freedom of movement being severely restricted. Perhaps the ideas and concepts of Fukuyama can have a significant impact in the Indonesian context, despite facing certain challenges and obstacles, meaning there is movement towards individual and collective well-being gradually, step by step. The methodology of this academic work involves a literature review and the results obtained from attending a seminar on the philosophy of liberalism. The findings of this research provide a mapping of the results of the analysis and its implications for the future of Indonesia, along with recommendations to optimize the potential towards the desired open society.

Abstract

Rapid technological developments and social changes have becomes major challenges for young people in the modern era. The inability to cope with these changes often leads to social pressure, identity crises, and increased suicide rates. This phenomenon highlights the need for an approach that can help young people build mental and moral preparedness to face the changes of the times. This study examines the modern Stoicism of Massimo Pigliucci, which offers practical principles such as the dichotomy of control, self-control, personal reflection, rational thinking, and mental resilience. Although not explicitly aimed at young people, Pigliucci's ideas have proven relevant and applicable in helping them respond to the changes of the times wisely and calmly. This study employs a literature review approach with a descriptive method to analyse the relevance of Pigliucci's philosophy in the context of young people's lives today. The findings indicate that the principles of modern Stoicism can serve as an effective guide for young people in managing life pressures, developing a resilient character, and finding meaning in life amidst the rapid changes of the digital and social era.

Abstract

The main focus of this article is to examine the philosophy of ethical relationality according to Armada Riyanto in fostering ecological awareness among the Manggarai community. The human environment and other creatures uphold the principle of unity that is mutually complementary, in which a harmonious and interdependent relationship is established, supporting each other's existence. However, within this harmonious relationship, a critical question arises: Is the principle that declares the ethics of unity and harmony between humans and other beings still relevant today? In reality, the natural habitat is currently plagued by very serious problems. This awareness prompts the author to elaborate on Armada Riyanto's philosophy of relationality in addressing ecological issues in Manggarai. Using a qualitative and phenomenological approach, this study highlights the relevance of ethical relationality in shaping the Manggarai people's awareness of their relationship with nature. The findings of this study reveal that Armada Riyanto’s philosophy of ethical relationality can serve as a foundation for the Manggarai community to develop a sense of responsibility toward nature. By understanding the relationality between humans and nature, it is hoped that the Manggarai community can possess and cultivate ecological awareness, which is increasingly manifested in concrete actions—particularly in how they perceive nature as a “brother” whose existence must be acknowledged and preserved.

Abstract

The main focus of this paper is to examine the role of information ethics in the midst of the data empire, based on the thinking of Luciano Floridi. Information ethics is important to study and develop further due to the rapid development of technology. Technological advances have expanded the scope of information ethics issues beyond the spread of hoaxes to also focuses on privacy and data protection for everyone as part of the study of information ethics. In recent decades, a new phenomenon has emerged due to technological advancements: the rise of data based power or the data-driven empire, where data serves as a tool to acquire and maintain power, particularly in social, economic, and political decision-making. This situation also drives information ethics as a fundamental aspect of safeguarding the data security of every individual. Luciano Floridi, an Italian philosopher, attempts to explain the importance of information ethics in the midst of technological advancements. Technological advancements have led society to live in an infosphere, a digital ecosystem that demands moral responsibility in processing, distributing, and utilizing information, according to Floridi. Technological advancements and data dominance also bring ethical challenges, according to Floridi, such as privacy violations, information manipulation, and technological access disparities. Thus, information ethics becomes a fundamental aspect as a controller of technological progress to prevent the emergence of a data driven empire that harms the entire society without access. These ethical challenges will be examined in this paper, which includes two main questions: what is meant by a data monopoly? How can the concept of information ethics in Luciano Floridi's thinking be applied to address the challenges of a data monopoly? This paper will be analyzed using a qualitative literature review method.
