Abstract

The transfer of the learning process in the classroom to online learning brings several problems for the world of education, one of which is the inhibition of practical learning activities, especially in chemistry subjects. This situation also substantially contributes to the inhibition of learning activities at the SMK level, where the learning character is more practical. Unfortunately, not all SMK chemistry teachers in the Malang district make online-based learning media, primarily to facilitate online practicum activities. One of the efforts that can be done to overcome these problems is the collaboration between universities, such as technical guidance activities (BIMTEK) conducted by the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA, the State University of Malang for chemistry teachers in SMK in Malang Regency. During the pandemic, the Chemistry Department has made learning innovations and efficient learning, such as alternative learning media to develop online-based media. One of them is a virtual laboratory that is integrated with android devices. Activities carried out to include 1) program socialization and cooperation to schools, (2) coaching, and (3) monitoring and evaluation. BIMTEK includes preparing and implementing training activities for creating virtual laboratories, starting from creating displays, content/animations, and making applications. The results indicate that BIMTEK activities are beneficial and provide more insight regarding online-based learning media.

Abstract

The intermolecular force is one of the chemistry topics covered in the high school curriculum in Indonesia. As the characteristics of chemistry concepts in general, intermolecular forces concepts can be presented in the three levels of chemical representations (microscopic, symbolic, and macroscopic).  Currently, chemistry teaching materials are available in Indonesian schools mostly have limited support for helping students to visualize the molecular aspect of intermolecular forces concepts mainly in the form of three-dimensional space (3D). This study aimed to produce an E-Learning teaching material enriched with 3D Molecular Visualization. The product (teaching material) in this study is presented by considering the syntax of guided inquiry-based learning. The product was developed with the procedure adopted from Lee and Owens, including assessment/analysis, need assessment, front-end analysis, design, and development. The product is valid and suitable to be applied in online chemistry teaching. However, further study to investigate the effectiveness of this product empirically need to be explored in the future.

Abstract

The voltaic cell teaching materials used in high school are still in the form of textbooks that do not present multiple representations of chemistry, namely the macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic levels. The three levels of chemical representation can be visualized using flipbook teaching materials so that students are expected to understand the voltaic cell material. Teaching materials are used to support the learning process. Current learning still uses conventional learning models that only focus on teachers. Constructivist-based active learning is needed because it involves students so that learning is more meaningful. One of the constructivist learning models is the guided inquiry learning model which includes observing, asking questions, compiling hypotheses, gathering information, testing hypotheses, and concluding. The purpose.of this development.is to.produce a proper guided inquiry-based flipbook teaching material. The flipbook teaching.materials were developed.using the Four-D model (define, .design, .develop,and.disseminate) but the disseminated stage was not carried out. Media and material validation was carried out by five chemistry lecturers. The legibility test was carried out by 50 high school alumni with a specialization in Science. The assessment uses a Likert scale accompanied by comments, suggestions from the validator, and audience. The data obtained from the analysis questionnaire to determine the feasibility level of the product using the percentage technique. The validation of the flipbook teaching materials development product in terms of material obtained an average score of 85.4%, validation in terms of media.obtained.an.average percentage of 85.5%, while the readability test results obtained.an.average.percentage of 87%. Based on the results.of material validation, media, and legibility tests, it can be concluded that the flipbook teaching materials guided inquiry-based voltaic cells are very suitable as a learning resource.

Abstract

The concept of chemistry must be well understood because the concept of chemistry is hierarchical and sequential. In addition, the concept of chemistry is abstract, which can provoke misconceptions. This study aims to identify misconceptions about the covalent bonding material and to determine the percentage of misconceptions about these materials. The results showed that a misconception was observed in 10 concepts of covalent bonding material with the following percentages: 1) 23 percent of the concepts forming elements of covalent compounds, the covalent compounds must be composed of non-metallic elements with non-metallic elements; 2) 69 percent on the Lewis structure concept, the total number of electrons based on the Lewis structure drawing is the number of valence electrons; 3) 54 percent in the concept of double bonds, the breaking energy of the double bonds is twice that of the energy of the single bonds; 4) 35 percent on the concept of covalent coordination bonds, the covalent coordination bonds are shorter than the covalent bonds; 5) 54 percent on the concept of polar covalent bonds and molecular polarity, the pair of binding electrons is located at the same distance between two bonding atoms; 6) 27 percent in the concept of formal charge, the value of the influences of electronegativity in the determination of the formal charge; 7) on the notion of byte rule and the stability of covalent compounds, 27 percent of the stable Lewis structure does not have a free electron pair (PEB) and respects the byte rule; 62 percent chlorine gas will form the Cl2 molecule because it follows the octet rule; and 54 percent of the covalent bonds store chemical energy; 8) 42 percent on the concept of molecular form, the molecular form of a compound is determined by the repulsion of binding electron pairs; 9) on the concept of intermolecular forces and the properties of covalent compounds, 38 percent of the energy required to boil the table salt is superior because the table salt is an ionic bond; and 81 percent of the strongest interactions are hydrogen bonds; and 10) in the concept of valence bond theory, 23 percent of the most important particles in the formation of covalent bonds are valence electrons; and 27 percent electron sharing means sharing one (1) electron with two atoms, as in the case of sharing an apple for two people.
