Abstract

Introduction: The Hajj pilgrimage is a pillar of Islam that must be carried out by every able-bodied Muslim. However, millions of pilgrims who gather each year face complex health challenges, including advanced age, comorbidities, and extreme environmental conditions. This study aims to identify the health risks of hajj pilgrims and the challenges in efforts to improve pilgrim health. Methods: The research method used is a narrative review, collecting related literature from various sources. The results of the study indicate that hajj pilgrim mortality is still high, mainly caused by cardiovascular disease, respiratory disorders, and heat stroke. Results: The mortality rate among Hajj pilgrims ranges from 1-3 per 1,000 per season, with 461 deaths recorded in 2024. Cardiovascular diseases (70%), respiratory infections, and heat stroke are the leading causes. Risk factors include advanced age, diabetes, hypertension, and extreme temperatures. Pilgrims' low compliance with vaccinations, especially meningitis and influenza, increases the risk of disease outbreaks. The crowded environment facilitates respiratory disease transmission, while limited access to healthcare and language barriers further complicate medical response. Health outreach, vaccination programs, international collaboration, and telemedicine are strategic measures that can help reduce mortality rates among Hajj pilgrims by improving health awareness, managing chronic conditions, and ensuring timely medical care. Conclusion: In conclusion, more comprehensive health interventions and are needed to reduce morbidity and mortality among hajj pilgrims.

Abstract

A health crisis risk monitoring information system needs to be developed, especially during the pre-disaster phase; therefore, understanding the needs of prospective users is crucial. This study aimed to investigate the needs of potential users regarding the development of this system. This study employed a qualitative, exploratory approach to gather user needs from stakeholders through interviews (n = 7) and one focus group discussion (n = 12). The data were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and then thematically analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The need for information was related to disaster preparedness and its preferred format. The system should be targeted, multiplatform, support multiple users, and easy to access. Features should include fully integration, advanced capabilities, online access, and the ability to generate fast and actionable information. It is essential to have this system for all users. A system must facilitate decision-making at various levels. The system should contain related information in a standardized format, easily accessible through various platforms and by multiple users, and serve as a tool for providing information for risk mitigation, monitoring, and reporting purposes.

Abstract

A decision-making tool for family planning flipchart is used for contraceptive counseling, but the use of this flipchart is suboptimal. In this study, primary study resulted in innovative decision-making tools for family planning applications. “Si KB Pintar” was also developed, a tool that women can use to discuss contraceptives with their husbands after family planning counseling. This study analyzed the effectiveness of family planning counseling during pregnancy by applying postpartum contraceptive use. Analytical quantitative quasi-experimental methods were used with a control group design. The sampling method was two-stage sampling. In the first stage, from 22 primary health care (PHC) in Cirebon City, Indonesia, 11 intervention and 11 control groups were selected using random allocation. Five participants were taken from each PHC in the second stage using simple random sampling. The findings indicated that participants given family planning counseling using an application had a 2.4 times higher likelihood of using postpartum contraception compared to flipcharts after controlling for age and parity variables. Because these applications are only for Android users, applications should be produced that all users can utilize in further study.
