Abstract

Abstract

Brazilian spinach originated from the American continent and has not been widely cultivated in Indonesia. Its narrow land urban farming development is constrained by low light-intensity conditions that prevent Brazilian spinach from growing optimally. The research aimed to study the effects of shade and cutting length on the growth of Brazilian spinach plants. The research was conducted from December 2023 to January 2024 at the experimental field of the Faculty of Agriculture UMJ. The research used a split-plot design with a randomized complete block design (RCBD) as the environmental design. The treatment used as the main plot was shade consisting of no shade, 45% paranet shade, and 65% paranet shade, while the length of cuttings became a subplot consisting of 5 cm, 7 cm, and 12 cm. The treatment combinations formed are nine, and were repeated 3 times. The results showed that shading increased humidity and decreased temperature and light intensity in the plant microenvironment. At the end of the study, in general, the provision of paranet shade up to 65% did not significantly affect Brazilian spinach plants' growth except for plant height and root length. The cutting length had no significant effect on all observed variables. The use of 5 cm cutting length is recommended because it is considered more efficient in providing cutting material. There were no interaction effects between shade and cutting length on the growth of Brazilian spinach plants.

Abstract

Chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum spp.) are a floricultural commodity with high economic value and widespread demand as both cut flowers and ornamental plants. However, chrysanthemums generally grow optimally in highlands with cool temperatures, so their cultivation in lowlands faces various physiological constraints, such as decreased flower quality, delayed flowering, and impaired nutrient absorption.  This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different NPK fertilizer dosages and types of Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) on soil nutrient availability (N, P, K), phenolic content, and flowering development of chrysanthemums cultivated in lowlands. The research was conducted in July–October 2024 at the greenhouse of the Jember State Polytechnic Plant Laboratory (±89 m above sea level) using a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors: NPK 16-16-16 fertilizer dosage (N1 = 4 g/L, N2 = 5 g/L, N3 = 6 g/L) and PGR types (P1 = paclobutrazol, P2 = gaviota, P3 = BAP). The observed variables included soil NPK content, leaf phenolics, flower number, flower diameter, and chlorophyll. The results showed that PGR had a more dominant effect than fertilizer dosage. The N3P3 treatment produced the highest phenolic content (0.257%), while the N1P1 combination increased soil nitrogen accumulation (0.566%), and the N2P3 combination provided the highest phosphorus (0.338%) and potassium (0.190%). The NPK fertilizer dosage did not significantly affect all parameters, while PGR significantly affected the flowering time and flower number. No interaction was found between the two treatment factors.

Abstract

Kailan has strong selling power, making it an attractive commodity for farmers. Plant introduction in a breeding program is one of the attempts being made to boost commercial kailan yield in Indonesia. The purpose of this introduction was to develop new varieties with high production, good yield quality, resistance to plant pest assaults, and adaptation in a variety of situations. The study sought to assess the agronomic properties of several imported kailan genotypes when grown in tropical lowlands. This experiment was conducted from May to July 2023 in the experimental field of the Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta, South Tangerang City. The study employed a Randomized Complete Block Design with one treatment factor, the kailan genotype, with five levels, including three introduced genotypes (KI001, KI002, and KI003) and two national varieties as comparators (Nita and Nemo). The results revealed that the introduced genotype KI003 had superior total fresh weight and marketable fresh weight features than the other introduced genotypes and all comparator varieties. The introduced genotypes KI001 and KI002 share the same agronomic features as the two comparator varieties. The study found that all introduced varieties could adapt well to lowland tropical climatic conditions, however only the introduced genotype KI003 demonstrated superior adaptation when compared to the comparator types. Abstract

Adding organic matter is required to ensure the availability and sustainability of soil organic matter. Agricultural residues constitute an important part of overall yearly biomass output and a major source of soil organic matter. The purpose of this study was to examine how five distinct industrial plant residue supplements affected soil chemical characteristics as well as the growth of three legume forage crops. The investigation was carried out over two growing seasons in the Field Crops Department's Greenhouse at Selçuk University in Turkey. The study used a Factorial RCBD design with two factors and four replications. The first factor was composed of industrial plant leftovers, which included control (soil only), wheat bran, cottonseed oilcake, sunflower seed oilcake, rapeseed oilcake, and soybean oilcake. The second factor was fodder crop species, which included forage pea, common vetch, and Narbon vetch. The results revealed that wheat bran, cottonseed oilcake, and sunflower seed oilcake increased plant growth compared to the control. Wheat bran produced the most plant growth (across all variables) in each growing season. Rapeseed and soybean oilcake additives were shown to be phytotoxic, inhibiting plant development and causing plants to yellow, wither, and die. Three plant residue amendments (wheat bran, cottonseed oilcake, and sunflower seed oilcake) improved some soil qualities. Sunflower seed oilcake-treated soils had the highest organic matter and K2O levels (1.35% and 10.33 kg/ha, respectively), whereas wheat bran-treated soils had the highest P2O5 (1.75 kg/ha). Keywords: bran, oilcakes, organic matter, seed meal

Abstract

White bok choy is a vegetable from the Brassicaceae family that holds high economic value and is highly sought after by consumers. However, its cultivation is often constrained by the selection of appropriate growing media, especially in limited urban spaces. This study aimed to determine the effect of different growing media compositions on the growth and yield of white bok choy plants. The research was conducted from January to February 2025 in the backyard area of a house located in Ciputat District, South Tangerang City. A Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was used with six treatment levels: soil (control); organic growing media; soil + rice husk charcoal (1:1); soil + organic growing media (1:1); organic growing media + rice husk charcoal (1:1); and soil + rice husk charcoal + organic growing media (1:1:1), each replicated four times. The results showed that the composition of the growing medium had no significant effect on any of the observed variables. Soil alone as the growing medium produced comparable results to other growing media and can be recommended as an efficient growing medium for white bok choy cultivation.
