Abstract

The study objective is to describe and analyse the meaning of oral literature of the Bajo tribe and to document oral literature as a reflection of local wisdom for the Bajo tribe. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive, which analyses the text one by one according to its meaning using thematic analysis approach. The data processing includes transcribed and documented texts in oral literature found in the Bajo Tribe of South Halmahera, including the original and translation texts. The findings reveal that the Legend of Batu Tolu and Batu Anyur, and the Legend of the Rich People Island are oral literature from the Bajo Tribe in South Halmahera, containing key themes such as: praise for Ternate and Tidore Royal families; hopes and prayers; respect for others; and understanding the ancestral heritage culture to uphold togetherness for the next generation. This study carries significant societal implications, particularly in preserving cultural heritage and strengthening community identity. Ultimately, by documenting and analyzing the oral traditions of the Bajo people, this research highlights the crucial role of storytelling in transmitting local wisdom, moral values, and environmental knowledge across generations.

Abstract

This paper aims to: (1) know what the intrinsic aspects of Pride and Prejudice, (2) describe how the social condition of England’s women is in 18th century reflected in “Pride and Prejudice” and (3) analyze what the economical influence towards England’s women in “Pride and Prejudice”. This study employs a qualitative research method with a literary analysis approach. The analysis of this thesis uses genetic structuralism. It is conducted by analyzing the intrinsic elements which consists of plot, characters, setting, and theme. Besides, the writer also analyzes the extrinsic elements by observing from the sociology, history and other aspects outside the literary work. The genetic structuralism analysis used to find the intrinsic elements in this novel, the social condition of England’s women in 18th century reflected in “Pride and Prejudice” and also the economical influence towards England’s women in “Pride and Prejudice”. This analysis shows that in the 18th century, England’s women get inequality gender in the society. Education, politic, and occupation are not allowed to them.  Economical matter pushed them to marry with a rich and high-status men to lead a secure life.

Abstract

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test to measure the English Language ability of non-native speakers taken by students applying to universities. The ability to understand foreign languages, including the importance of studying TOEFL, is one of the supporting factors for academics in continuing their studies to a higher level, including for lecturers of Hein Namotemo University who are required to continue their studies to Master and Doctoral degrees. However, the problems are the insufficient TOEFL score hindered the scholarship provider's requirements. Departing from these problems, the team sought a solution by conducting TOEFL score improvement training which would then be utilized according to the academic needs. Therefore, this community service training aims to equip educators and staff to improve their foreign language skills through TOEFL training. Thus, the results of the activities carried out had a positive impact on the Lecturers and Staff at UNHENA, as evidenced by the enthusiasm of the participants who took an active role during the activity and asked Unkhair team to continue the program, especially foreign language training, This is in accordance with the purpose of Community Service, which is beneficial to the society.

Abstract

ABSTRAK                                                                            Permasalahan rendahnya minat baca siswa dan kurangnya pemahaman terhadap nilai-nilai kasih sayang, khususnya kasih sayang seorang ibu, menjadi perhatian utama dalam program pengabdian ini. Observasi awal di SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kota Ternate menunjukkan bahwa siswa cenderung kurang tertarik pada literatur anak dan memiliki pemahaman yang dangkal mengenai kasih sayang ibu. Program ini bertujuan untuk menumbuhkan empati dan kesadaran emosional siswa melalui pendekatan literasi sastra anak. Metode pelaksanaan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatif-partisipatif melalui serangkaian kegiatan literasi, seperti penyediaan buku cerita anak, pelatihan mendongeng, lomba puisi, diskusi interaktif dengan media visual dan digital, serta pelibatan orang tua dalam komunitas literasi keluarga. Sasaran kegiatan ini adalah siswa kelas 1 dan 2, guru, serta orang tua siswa, dengan total partisipan aktif sebanyak 20 siswa. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam minat baca siswa dan pemahaman mereka terhadap nilai kasih sayang ibu. Selain itu, program ini berhasil membangun sinergi positif antara siswa, guru, dan orang tua dalam menciptakan budaya literasi dan pendidikan karakter berbasis sastra. Program ini berpotensi menjadi model praktik baik yang dapat direplikasi di sekolah-sekolah lain dengan karakteristik serupa. Kata kunci: kasih sayang ibu; sastra anak; literasi; pendidikan karakter; SMP. ABSTRACTThe issue of low reading interest among students and their limited understanding of core values, particularly a mother’s love, is the main focus of this community service program. Initial observations at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kota Ternate revealed that students showed little interest in children’s literature and had a shallow grasp of maternal affection. This program aims to foster empathy and emotional awareness among students through a literary-based approach using children’s literature. The implementation method employed a qualitative-participatory approach involving a series of literacy activities, such as the provision of children’s storybooks, storytelling training, poetry competitions, interactive discussions using visual and digital media, and the active involvement of parents through a family literacy community. The target participants included 1st and 2nd-grade students, teachers, and parents, with a total of 20 active students. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ reading interest and their understanding of a mother’s love. Additionally, the program successfully fostered positive collaboration among students, teachers, and parents in building a culture of literacy and character education through literature. This initiative holds potential as a model of best practice that can be replicated in other schools with similar contexts.  Keywords: mother’s love; children’s literature; literacy; character education; junior high school.

Abstract

Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk's (RDP) literary work is a part of the work considered in the world because in some countries the literary work is one of the materials studied by students as academic studies. The purpose of this study is to examine the nature of RDP's work by looking at the ontology of the creation of these literary works. This research uses sociology of literature approach by looking at the relation between the literary works with the community context. The results of this study are that the RDP literature illustrates the tense state of political struggle and social conditions at that time. This work also explains the atmosphere of a small village with various community characters full of erotic lifestyles. This is illustrated through the Ronggeng figure namely Srintil and the inner complication of Rasus who hates the inaugural process of Srintil who will become ronggeng. One of the night process of not having mosquito nets is a ritual to become a ronggeng. Auctions of virginity like this occur in the Hamlet of Paruk, the value of sexuality highlighted by Tohari as one of the harsh criticisms that women are more valued and protected. Literary works in the form of novels written by Tohari are not only literary works that can be read and enjoyed, but Tohari emphasizes on moral values that must be imbedded in community.

Abstract

Convensional Learning Model, such as lecturing method which makes teacher as the learning center without notice to the activeness and participation of students in the classroom still becomes teachers’ favourite style in teaching reading comprehension. Consequently, the learning process tends to be monotonous. This factor can answer the reason why the students’ achievement in reading skill at SMA 2 Ternate is not optimal. Then, this is suspected to be a factor in the occurrence of these problems. Therefore, the researcher applied TBLT (Task Based Language Teaching) and combine it with authentic material in reading comprehension. This research is a quasi-experimental research with the nonequivalent pretest-posttest group design. The total population of this study were students of XI SMA Negeri 2 Ternate, who were class XI students of SMA Negeri 2 Kota Ternate. One of the XI classes was used as the experimental class and another one became the control class, then it analyzed by using SPSS 20.0. The selection of the class was based on the observation to see the similarity of students' abilities in these classes. The result showed that the TBLT method combined with the authentic material in the Reading Comprehension could increase: (1) the learning motivation of XI SMA 2 Ternate students; (2) increasing the student learning outcomes. It can be seen from the results of the Paired Sample t-test table that the significance = 0.000 is less than the significant level (α) = 0.05, then H0 is rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that there has been an increasing of learning outcomes in the experimental class from pre-test to post-test. Based on the result, the TBLT method can be recommended as a method used to increase English learning motivation.
