Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the catches of tuna landed at the Ambon Nusantara Fisheries Port. The research was conducted for two months, from January to February 2023, using descriptive methods. Primary data was collected through direct observation and interviews with fishermen and port officers, while secondary data was obtained from PPN Ambon. The results of this research show that the catch was landed by four fishing fleets, namely purse seines, gill nets, fish trawls and lines fishing. The total catch landed during the 2012-2021 period was 510,203 tons, which was dominated by Auxis thazard. Purse seines are the most dominant fishing gear used, contributing 52.1% of the total catch with a total fishing effort of 597 trips. The productivity of the fishing fleet fluctuates from year to year, the lowest productivity for Euthynnus affinis occurred in 2018 and the highest in 2013, while the lowest productivity forl Auxis thazard occurred in 2017 and the highest in 2018. Fluctuating and low productivity indicates the existence of potential for overfishing. This research suggests the need for further analysis regarding the potential and level of utilization of the two species of frigate tuna landed in PPN Ambon

Abstract

Fish trap is used due to its good prospect, particularly for demersal fish and reef fish in Maluku. A challenge of trap fisheries is the capture of various species of fish, along with a narrow size variation in the captured fish. To reduce the species diversity in the catch and allow the escape of young fish, an escape gap is recommended. This study aims to analyze the effect of different escape gap sizes on the fish that escape and their chances of being caught or escaping relative to the dominant catch. The study was conducted from July to September 2021 in the waters of Eri Village, Nusaniwe District, Ambon City, Indonesia. The experimental fishing method was used in the field. The results indicated that the size of the escape gap had no effect on the number of fish that escaped through each escape gap. The 50% probability of Achanturus reversus escaping from the size 2.0 cm escape gap is in the total length range of 21-22 cm, while from a 3.0 cm escape gap is 24-25 cm. Abstract

The issue of equitable access for local fishermen to marine resources remains a critical concern in the implementation of Measured Fishing (PIT) policies in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the perceptions of local fishermen regarding PIT, with a specific focus on their access rights in Fisheries Management Area (WPPNRI) 714. The research was conducted from September to November 2023 in several coastal areas in Ambon Island and Banda Neira, Central Maluku. The survey targeted local fishermen operating ring seine (jaring bobo) vessels larger than 5 GT in the villages of Latuhalat, Laha, Waai, and Hitu. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling, and data were analyzed descriptively. Results indicate that most vessel owners support PIT, perceiving its benefits in sustaining fish stocks, optimizing profits, improving data accuracy, and increasing non-tax state revenue. However, many fishermen disagree with the obligation to pay landing fees at designated ports, viewing it as an additional burden. The findings reveal that while the ecological and economic aspects of PIT are generally well-received, issues related to fairness, administrative obligations, and economic impact remain contentious. In conclusion, the successful implementation of PIT requires adaptive and inclusive policies that prioritize sustainability while ensuring the economic viability of local small-scale fishers. These insights are expected to support both regional and national policymakers in formulating fair and context-sensitive fisheries governance.

Abstract

The northern coastal waters of Ambon Island, particularly the area of Negeri Larike, serve as an important habitat for various economically and ecologically valuable reef fish species. Fishing activities using traditional drum traps (bubu gendang) are still practiced by local fishers as part of a small-scale, sustainable fishery. This study aims to analyze the catch characteristics of the bubu gendang operated in the northern waters of Ambon Island, particularly in the coastal area of Negeri Larike. The observed parameters include species composition, total length distribution, and bycatch rate. Data were obtained through direct observation of the catches from two traditional bubu units operated for one day, from 06:00 WIT to 06:00 WIT the following day, followed by species identification and biometric measurements. The results showed a total of 144 individual fish caught, comprising 20 species dominated by the families Acanthuridae (27.8%) and Chaetodontidae (22.2%). In terms of biomass, Calotomus carolinus contributed the highest (15.0%). Most of the fish caught were within the small to medium size range, with the highest average total length recorded in the Caesionidae family (23.5 cm). The bycatch rate was recorded at 32.7% by number of individuals and 18.2% by biomass. These findings indicate that the bubu gendang demonstrates good selectivity toward target species, although there remains a potential for capturing non-target species. This study provides technical recommendations for improving trap selectivity through the development of more environmentally friendly designs. It contributes scientific insights for evaluating the effectiveness of traditional fishing gear and supports sustainable fisheries management strategies based on coral reef ecosystem approaches in coastal areas.
