Abstract

Abstract

Background: Roberts syndrome (RBS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, with no estimates of prevalence have been published. It is caused by mutation in the “Establishment of cohesion 1 homolog 2” (ESCO2) gene on the short arm of chromosome 8, and characterized by symmetrical limb reduction, craniofacial anomalies, growth retardation, mental retardation, cardiac, and renal abnormalities. Objective: The aim of this case report is to describe the findings of a suspected case of Roberts syndrome born at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital and to examine the diagnostic process in suspected cases of Roberts syndrome in low-income countries such as Indonesia.Case: A 32-year-old woman came to the hospital at 29 weeks' gestation. Antenatal sonography screening showed a singleton pregnancy with multiple congenital anomalies: labiognatopalatoschisis, short humerus with absent antebrachial structures. After counseling about the fetal condition and prognosis, the pregnancy was terminated by Misoprostol induction. Post-natal examination revealed an extremely low birth weight baby with labiopalatoschisis, ear malformation, ventricular septal defect, patent foramen ovale, diaphragmatic eventration, bilateral phocomelia, syndactyly, and a Congenital Talipes Equinovarus (CTEV) of the left foot. A Roberts syndrome was suspected, and a cytogenetic testing was initially planned, however it was not done due to the high cost of the test and its availability. The baby’s condition deteriorated and later died on the second day after birth.Discussion: A suspicion of Roberts syndrome may begin during prenatal ultrasound of a fetus with multiple congenital anomalies. Mortality rates are high in severe clinical manifestations. Follow-up management for survivors involves a multidisciplinary medical approach. Conclusion:  Prenatal findings of limb abnormalities should be evaluated carefully to detect any associated anomalies which may links to a specific syndrome, thus helping a clinician predict prognosis, and further decide the most beneficial patient management.

Abstract

Nursing students in their early stages often face academic pressure and psychosocial transitions that can impact their mental health. This study aims to identify the relationship between self-esteem and depression levels among first-year nursing students in Jakarta. A quantitative correlational research method with a cross-sectional approach was used, involving 106 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The instruments used include the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) to measure self-esteem and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) to assess depression levels. Data analysis was conducted using Spearman's test and chi-square. The results showed a significant negative correlation between self-esteem and depression (ρ = -0.875; p < 0.001), indicating that lower self-esteem is associated with higher levels of depression. These findings emphasize the importance of psychosocial interventions focused on enhancing self-esteem as a preventive measure for depression among nursing students. The study contributes to the development of mental health promotion strategies in nursing higher education. The implications suggest the need to integrate promotive and preventive approaches into the curriculum and counseling services to detect early depression risks and strengthen students' self-esteem from the outset. Group-based interventions and coping skills training can enhance the psychological well-being of students.

Abstract

Technology-based decision aids are increasingly integrated into contraceptive counseling to enhance informed decision-making and promote patient-centered care. However, evidence regarding their effectiveness on clinical outcomes and the evolving role of healthcare providers remains limited. The aim of this study was to map existing evidence on technology-based contraceptive decision aids and to examine the role of healthcare providers in supporting decision-making processes. The study was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR framework. A systematic search was performed across PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, and Scopus for studies published between January 1, 2000, and March 1, 2025. Study selection and data extraction were performed independently by two reviewers, with discrepancies resolved through discussion. A total of five studies were included, encompassing web-based platforms, mobile applications, and tablet-based tools. The findings suggest that technology-based decision aids improve patient knowledge and satisfaction. However, the assisting technology does not improve contraceptive uptake and continuation rates. Across studies, healthcare providers remained essential in facilitating shared decision-making by contextualizing information, addressing patient concerns, and supporting individualized choices. In conclusion, current evidence suggests that the use of technology to support contraceptive decision-making improves subjective outcomes, but not clinical outcomes. Healthcare providers remain essential in complementing these tools, ensuring that decisions are informed and tailored to individual contexts. Further high-quality studies are needed to strengthen the evidence base and evaluate long-term effectiveness.

Abstract

AbstractObjective: To evaluate contraceptive service training using the Kirkpatrick evaluation model levels 1–3.Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted based on the Kirkpatrick evaluation model to assess contraceptive service training in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Thirty health workers participated after providing informed consent. The competency-based training employed a blended learning approach, consisting of 57 hours of online theoretical instruction followed by 50 hours of face-to-face practical training. The training was evaluated at the reaction, learning, and behavior levels of the Kirkpatrick model. Participants were representatives from districts and municipalities across West Nusa Tenggara Province. Results: Participants reported a high level of satisfaction with the training (86.89%). Knowledge levels improved significantly, with mean scores increasing from 56.33 on the pre-test to 95.73 on the post-test. During the training, participants demonstrated effective counseling skills as well as competency in IUD and implant insertion and removal. However, the mean competency scores showed a decline one year after the training. Conclusion: The improvement in pre-test and post-test scores was statistically significant (p < 0.001). At the behavior level, a slight decrease in competency was observed after one year of follow-up.Keywords: contraceptive services, contraceptive training, evaluation, health worker, kirkpatrick model.

Abstract

Background: Female reproductive organs' congenital abnormalities consist of abnormalities in the hymen, vagina, cervix, uterus, and others1. These abnormalities can affect women's ability to menstruate, sexual relations, reproduction, and psychological conditions2. Management of this abnormality depends on the defects of the organs involved and the expected improvement in function. This research was conducted because of the limitation of these cases. Objective: This study aims to determine the quality of life after surgery in women with congenital abnormalities of the reproductive organs. Methods: This study used a prospective study with a descriptive observational cross-sectional method. The population was patients at the Obstetrics Gynecology Polyclinic of Dr. Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta in 2022 who had congenital disorders of the reproductive organs, aged at least 17 years old, and had undergone surgery. Participants filled out the FSFI and sociodemographic questionnaire. Results: There were 15 participants with 3 types of congenital abnormalities, namely 2 hymenal disorders (microperforate hymen and cribiform hymen), 9 vaginal abnormalities (vaginal agenesis and cervicovaginal agenesis), and 4 uterine and vaginal abnormalities (HWW syndrome). After surgery, 13 people experienced an improvement in abdominal pain; 9 people with primary amenorrhoea were able to menstruate; and 8 married people were able to have sex after surgery. For sexual function, 62.5% of participants had good FSFI scores. Conclusion: Surgery can provide a good function for abdominal pain, menstruation, and sexual relations.
