Abstract

Abstract

Social forestry (SF) is Indonesian policy that aims to provide legal access to the community in utilizing forest resources and seek sustainable forest management, contributing to the community's economic improvement. This study examines the action situation of implementing SF policies in Central Sulawesi Province and analyses the roles of stakeholders and exogenous variables determining SF policies' outcomes. The Institutional Analysis Development (IAD) framework was applied in the study by identifying and analyzing the action situation and its relation to the implementation of SF in Central Sulawesi. The research revealed that the implementation of social forestry in Central Sulawesi Province is not optimal. This is indicated by the fact that local institutions have not achieved self-governance, the sustainability of forest function has not been realized, and the social forestry programs have not significantly increased the income of the local community.. Implementing the SF policy depends on the facilitator's capacity at the site level and stakeholders' support. The action for strengthening social forestry at site levels requires strong collaboration among stakeholders by considering their interests and capacities. These findings suggested the urgency of future research to examine strategies for governing the role of stakeholders in boosting local institutional capacity and the outcomes of SF policies.

Abstract

This research investigates the economic patterns of expenditure and preferences regarding medicinal plants and chemical drugs by people living around the forest in the working area of the Dolago Tanggunung Forest Management Unit. This research aims to analyze people's economic preferences in the use of medicinal plants and chemical drugs by identifying the types of medicinal plants used, their economic value, and comparison of expenditure between the two types of drugs. This research used the Stratified Random Sampling method with 100 respondents, and data analysis was carried out using the paired t-test and multiple linear regression with the t test to measure the influence of various factors on the frequency of use of medicinal plants. The results of the research show that there are 60 types of medicinal plants from 35 families that are used by the local community. The effectiveness factor (β=0.30, p=0.003) has the strongest influence on the frequency of use of medicinal plants, followed by reasons for use (β=0.15, p=0.035) and the price of chemical drugs (β=-0.25, p=0.007). The high price of chemical drugs encourages people to turn to medicinal plants as an alternative. On the other hand, the level of trust in medicinal plants (p=0.215) did not have a significant effect on the frequency of use. Thus, economic and effectiveness factors are more dominant in determining people's preferences for medicinal plants compared to trust factors. Integration between traditional and modern medicine can be a solution to improve public health in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

Dependence on forests is a condition in which humans are highly dependent on forests to support their livelihoods. Forests provide various natural resources. This study aims to determine the extent of community dependence on limited production forests and Lore Lindu National Park, as well as the factors that influence it. The research sample consisted of 58 people in Kapiroe Village, selected using the simple random sampling (SRS) methodology. Data were analysed using the Likert scale method. The dependence of the community in Kapiroe Village shows that 34.29% of the community's income comes from activities and utilisation in the TNLL area, while 65.7% comes from the HPT area. This finding confirms that the community of Kapiroe Village is highly dependent on limited production forests as their main source of livelihood. This high level of dependence highlights the role of the area in supporting the local economy, far exceeding the contribution of conservation areas such as TNLL.

Abstract

Background: Watershed conservation in Poboya Village, Mantikulore District is very important to maintain ecosystem balance and environmental sustainability, considering that the river plays a role as the main source of water for downstream areas. This study aims to find out the role of the community in watershed conservation in Poboya Village, Mantikulore District. Method: This research was carried out in Poboya Village, Mantikulore District for 1 month, from April to May 2025. The sampling technique used was snowball sampling. The data collection of this research was carried out through the distribution of questionnaires with a Likert scale, conducting in-depth interviews, and using an open-ended approach. Findings: The results of the research obtained from 30 respondents in Poboya Village, Mantikulore District, found that the level of public understanding of watershed conservation is classified as high, with an average score of 116. This shows that the community in general has a good understanding of the concept, function, and importance of watershed conservation, including the influence of natural factors and human activities on the condition of watershed ecosystems. The role of the community in watershed conservation efforts is also categorized as moderate, with an average score of 86. Less active communities participate in various conservation activities such as planting trees on riverbanks, domestic waste management, the use of conservative agricultural techniques, and involvement in environmental outreach and campaigns. Conclusion: The community in Poboya Village shows a strong understanding of watershed conservation but demonstrates moderate levels of participation in related activities. There is a need to enhance community involvement in practical conservation efforts through increased education, outreach, and empowerment initiatives. Novelty/Originality of this Article: This study contributes to the understanding of community-based watershed conservation by highlighting the disparity between awareness and active participation, specifically in a local village context where water resources are directly linked to the livelihoods of downstream populations.

Abstract

This study investigated the expenditure patterns and preferences regarding medicinal plants and chemical drugs in communities living around the forest of the Kulawi Forest Management Unit working area. The purpose of this study was to identify the types of medicinal plants used by the community, as well as to compare the expenditure of medicinal plants with chemical drugs. The sampling technique used was Stratified Random Sampling (SRS). The sampling method involved 90 respondents who were sampled in this study. Data analysis used Comparative analysis of paired-Samples T test. The results of the study showed that there are 27 species and 20 families of medicinal plants in the Kulawi Forest Management Unit Working Area that are utilized by the community. These continue to be a major health resource in the region, as evidenced by 70% of the community expressing preference and utilization of these plants over chemical drugs. Notably, expenditure on chemical drugs is only 30% of total health care costs. These findings indicate an increasing recognition within the community of the advantages associated with traditional medicine, It is imperative to maintain the efficacy of herbal medicine to achieve sustainable healthcare in the region. The results of the Paired SampleTest showed that the significant value of the expenditure of medicinal plants and chemical drugs was .000, which means the value is smaller than 0.05. This means that the comparison of expenditure on medicinal plants and chemical drugs is not the same. There is a significant comparison of expenditure on the use of medicinal plants with chemical drugs in the community of the Kulawi Forest Management Unit working area, which occurs due to increased public awareness of the benefits of natural medicinal plants and is affordable or more accessible for some people.
