Abstract

The mathematical literacy ability of students is still relatively low, and they have not been trained optimally. This study aims to analyze the level of mathematical literacy of prospective mathematics teacher students in the Selected Capita of Elementary Mathematics Education II course. The material includes the Pythagorean Theorem, Quadrilaterals and Triangles, Curved Side Spaces, and Comparison. The subjects of the study involved 25 students who were taking the Selected Capita of Elementary Mathematics Education II course. The research method used was qualitative with the Phenomenology Hermeneutic approach. The stages of the Phenomenology Hermeneutic approach are deciding on research questions, identifying pre-understanding, gaining understanding through dialogue with participants, gaining knowledge through dialogue with text, and building trust. Data were collected through descriptions of student answers and selected interviews. The data analysis technique follows the steps of Miles & Huberman. Question number 3 has a literacy indicator, namely interpreting solutions in problem-solving (interpret). The focus of the analysis is on students' answers to question number 3. Three students answered correctly, while one student answered with a few errors. While answers from 20 students contain significant errors, 1 student did not provide an answer. 3 students, who correctly answered question number 3, belong to moderate-ability students. Nevertheless, none of the students from the high-ability group were able to answer perfectly. This shows that students with moderate ability are better at answering question number 3 than students with high ability. Of the 20 student answers with the criteria of many errors, two answer patterns were found, errors in process skills and errors in writing the final answer. Efforts are needed to improve literacy skills through the presentation of literacy questions and learning that supports the development of students' mathematical literacy.    Keywords: capita selecta course, mathematical literacy skills, prospective mathematics teacher, hermeneutic phenomenology.

Abstract

Algebra is one of the essential branches of mathematics that often presents challenges for students, especially when faced with inverse function problems. This study aims to describe algebraic reasoning in solving inverse function problems from the perspective of students' mathematical resilience. This qualitative research uses a case study design involving 33 eleventh-grade students from a public high school in West Bandung Regency. The instruments used were a mathematical resilience scale and an algebraic reasoning test. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that 15.15% of students had low resilience, 72.72% had moderate resilience, and 12.12% had high resilience. There were different characteristics in algebraic reasoning among students in these resilience categories. The implications indicate that targeted learning strategies can enhance algebraic reasoning, especially for moderate and low-resilience students.

Abstract

This systematic research aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the development of analysis related to the use of programming in the development of Computational Thinking (CT), especially in the context of education from primary to tertiary levels. This study analyzed 88 articles from empirical studies related to the use of programming to develop CT sourced from the Scopus database. The analysis process followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and consisted of three stages: search, selection, and data analysis. Descriptive and thematic statistical approaches were used for data analysis. Instruments used in the selection of articles included Rayyan for screening based on inclusion criteria, as well as Microsoft Excel for coding and thematic analysis. The results showed that articles related to the use of programming to promote CT have appeared since 2011 but have increased significantly since 2016, with an annual growth rate of 17.6%. Most studies used quantitative approaches, followed by qualitative and mixed methods. Overall, 270 authors from 27 countries contributed to the study, with the United States having the highest number of publications. A total of 33 programming tools were identified, with Scratch being the most widely used tool, followed by Blockly, LEGO, Scratch Jr., Code.org, Python, Alice, App Inventor, Kodu, R, MakeCode, and Arduino. Scratch Jr. is most commonly used at the early childhood education level, while programming languages such as Python, R, and MATLAB are more commonly used in higher education. The implications of these findings suggest that the trend of using programming tools such as Scratch and Blockly has the potential to influence CT teaching strategies in the classroom, as well as the importance of using varied programming tools in efforts to integrate CT into the education curriculum.

Abstract

Operator norm comparisons play a fundamental role in matrix analysis, yet existing proofs often depend on operator means or interpolation techniques. This study provides a function-theoretic approach to operator norm inequalities. It also extends the classical two-term Heinz comparison to multi-term averages with arbitrary symmetric probability weights. Our approach translates each operator norm comparison into a scalar condition. The condition is derived from functional calculus for the left and right multiplication operators. We examine positive-definiteness and infinite divisibility through Fourier-measure representations. We also use elementary closure properties. For positive operators and any unitarily invariant norm, the two-term Heinz symmetrization is dominated by the binomial average when the exponent differs from one-half by at most one divided by twice the number of terms. For general symmetric probability weights, domination occurs exactly when the exponent lies within a specific threshold. This threshold equals the smallest positive distance from the midpoint to any index carrying nonzero weight. The proposed function-theoretic framework yields necessary and sufficient thresholds to unify the binomial and general symmetric cases.
