Abstract

This research investigates the role of empowerment communication in a community-based rehabilitation program for substance abuse in rural Banyumas, specifically focusing on Karangtengah Village. Adopting a focused ethnographic approach, the study aims to describe the local culture and wisdom, map the communication patterns among stakeholders involved in drug abuse prevention and rehabilitation, and analyze how empowerment communication is conducted within the village community.Karangtengah Village was selected by the Banyumas Regency National Narcotics Agency (BNNK) as a pilot project for the Community-Based Intervention (IBM) Program due to its status as a tourist buffer village, making it susceptible to drug abuse influences. The program utilizes Recovery Agents (AP), a team of five volunteers dedicated to assisting individuals experiencing mild drug abuse issues. The findings highlight that the village's communication dynamics are significantly shaped by social structures, livelihoods, and community institutions, all of which play crucial roles in daily interactions. The empowerment communication process is facilitated through various IBM services, including socialization, mapping, outreach, and mentoring. The study demonstrates that effective communication is pivotal in influencing actions within rural communities, with social capital and local wisdom serving as foundational elements. By enhancing social capital and promoting collective self-empowerment, effective communication fosters community involvement in their development and progress, particularly in community-based drug rehabilitation initiatives. This research contributes to communication science by showcasing the efficacy of empowerment communication rooted in local wisdom and social capital, thereby encouraging rural community engagement in drug rehabilitation efforts.

Abstract

Children of migrant workers often face barriers in accessing quality education, which can negatively impact their development and future. This international community service aims to raise the awareness of migrant workers' parents about the importance of education for their children through counseling conducted at Sentul Commmunity Learning Service, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The activity involved 20 parents of Guidance Studio students. The counseling used a participatory and inclusive approach, taking into account the participants' cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The results of this activity showed positive changes in parents' perceptions and attitudes towards education, with increased awareness of the role of education in breaking the cycle of poverty and social marginalization. Nonetheless, achieving sustainable change requires a collaborative and holistic effort involving various stakeholders, including the government, schools, civil society organizations and academics. This community service contributes to the literature on the education of migrant workers' children and emphasizes the importance of involving parents as active partners in expanding access to education for this marginalized group.

Abstract

Curug Muntu Development Program in Ketenger Village, Baturraden District, Banyumas Regency, aims to strengthen ecotourism in the area. Curug Muntu, which is known as a natural tourist attraction, has great potential to support the local economy and increase awareness of environmental conservation. So far, Curug Muntu has not been used as an ecotourism destination in Ketenger village because its condition still needs to be managed. Its existence is different from the two waterfalls that have been managed as tourist destinations, namely Curug Jenggala and Curug Bayan. This development involves empowering local communities through partnerships, which is expected to improve infrastructure, increase tourism service capacity, and provide direct economic benefits to village residents. This program is part of a larger effort to develop tourism potential in Banyumas and promote sustainable ecotourism. Through training and practice during the community service program, the community succeeded in creating infrastructure leading to and at Curug Muntu, increasing the capacity of tourism services by creating social media to promote Curug Muntu, and opening up employment opportunities for the surrounding community. With the introduction of social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, Curug Muntu is starting to become widely known, which is marked by an increase in tourist visit.
