Abstract

This research is intended at investigating the effect of suggestopedia method on Indonesian EFL learners’ reading achievement in descriptive texts. Suggestopedia method in this research described as the use of classic music as the background in the process of teaching and learning. This research used Quasiexperimental research design and involving two classes of SMP Al Izzah IIBS, Batu. There were 30 students as the experimental group and 27 students as control group. The participants were given treatment of suggestopedia in 3 meetings (each meeting lasted for 90 minutes). They were given two kinds of tests as the instrument in this study, namely pre-test and post-test. The result of the pre-test and post-test was analyzed by using t-test in SPSS. The research revealed that there was a significant progress between the pre-testand the post-test score.

Abstract

Constructivism theory is a learning theory that is oriented towards forming the structure of thought patterns and students' understanding of the material through experience and the learning process. This form of implementation in the field, especially in learning maharah kalam in Arabic, can be supported using the cooperative learning method. This research aims to determine the implementation of constructivist learning theory in maharah kalam learning using the cooperative learning method. This type of research is field research with a descriptive qualitative approach carried out at Madrasah Tsanawiah Satu Atap Al-Hidayah, Batu City, East Java. Data collection techniques use observation techniques and interview techniques. The data analysis used is the Miles, Huberman and Saldana analysis technique with three steps, namely condensing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions or verification. The results of this research include the following (1) implementation of constructivist learning theory in maharah kalam learning at Madrasah Tsanawiah Satu Atap Al-Hidayah, Batu City with the cooperative learning method applied according to the steps and principles of learning, so as to provide a pleasant learning experience for students . (2) the problems encountered in implementing constructivist learning theory are a lack of initiative in discussing learning material and a lack of motivation in learning Arabic, so that efforts to deal with the problem of implementing constructivist learning theory are for teachers to provide encouragement and motivation in learning Arabic and make improvements- improvements in learning.

Abstract

Lingkungan berbahasa merupakan segala yang dapat didengar, dilihat, dan dirasakan oleh siswa berkaitan dengan bahasa target yang sedang dipelajari. Dalam teori behaviorisme, lingkungan menjadi salah satu aspek terpenting baik dalam pemerolehan maupun pembelajaran bahasa kedua. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan korelasi teori behaviorisme dengan kegiatan kebahasaan yang dilakukan di lingkungan berbahasa asrama PP. Al-Islam. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian deskriptif. Penelitian dilakukan di asrama putri PP. Al-Islam Joresan Mlarak Ponorogo pada tahun 2023. Dengan menggunakan teknik observasi dan wawancara sebagai teknik pengumpulan data. Adapun dalam menganalisis data yang telah terkumpul, digunakan teknik analisis data deskriptif kualitatif dengan teori Miles Huberman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa stimulus yang diberikan dari beberapa kegiatan kebahasaan yang ada adalah tuntutan memahami ucapan menggunakan bahasa asing sesuai program one day one language, kewajiban menghafal setiap kosa kata baru yang diberikan, mampu membuat percakapan dan pidato sesuai tema, memahami pidato temannya dan film berbahasa asing yang ditonton untuk nantinya dituliskan ringkasan substansinya. Dari berbagai stimulus tersebut mereka diberikan penguatan berupa hukuman ketika tidak melakukan, maka mau tidak mau siswa akan melakukan respon baik untuk menyelesaikan setiap tanggung jawab yang diberikan. Tingkah laku tersebut akan terus dilakukan setiap harinya sehingga membentuk suatu kebiasaan yang baik dalam berbahasa.

Abstract

The reward is a form of appreciation from the student pursuer to provide an inner emotional connection. The reward is a strategy in learning that functions as a stimulus and response to students in learning English effectively. The type of reward given to students varies greatly depending on the needs of students in learning, ranging from praise, grades, and nonverbal. All the variations of rewards in learning have a common goal of increasing student motivation in learning. This study aims to determine students' perceptions of reward strategies to increase motivation to learn English in junior high school. The respondents in this study were class VIII-A students at MTsN 8 Kediri for the 2021/2022 academic year. The number of respondents was 33 students in the bilingual class. Meanwhile, the research method used is a qualitative case study using questionnaires and interviews to obtain accurate data. This study shows that students give positive perceptions about learning to use rewards in increasing learning motivation. There are four kinds of rewards often used in learning English at MTsN 8 Kediri.

Abstract

Grammar is often considered difficult to learn. With the development of technology in education, this difficulty can be overcome using media that integrate with technology. One of the media that can be used for learning grammar is Wordwall.net. Many studies have examined the use of Wordwall.net in the learning process, one of those in the process of learning grammar. As a result, this research explores EFL students' perception of using Wordwall.net as media for learning Grammar by looking at their acceptance based on four variables of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which are perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), Perceive Usefulness (PU), Attitude Towards Using (ATU), and Behavioral Intention to Use (BITU) and what difficulties they faced during the implementation of Wordwall.net in learning Grammar which focuses on eleventh-grade students MAN 1 Gresik as the novelty of this research. This research used a mixed method. With a sequential explanatory research design, the instruments used in this study are questionnaires and interview guidelines. The questionnaires use the Likert scale to measure the data. From the analysis process, students perceive that Wordwall.net is easy to use and useful. In addition, students show a positive attitude towards using Wordwall.net in grammar learning, and students intend to use Wordwall.net in the process of learning Grammar in the next meeting. Difficulties faced by students when using Wordwall.net is the less clear instructions, internet problems, and students' device. Thus, students accept the use of Wordwall.net in grammar learning, and the source of problems that arise are external problems. Furthermore, Wordwall.net can be implemented in the learning grammar process because this game brings a positive impact based on students' perceptions. The game is easy to use, simple, fun, and increases their learning motivation.

Abstract

The qualitative study investigated the digital media impact on language learning, focusing on overcoming anxiety, enhancing linguistic elements, and fostering motivation for developing speaking skills among four English as foreign language (EFL) learners at an Islamic University in Malang, Indonesia. Through the use of observations and in-depth interviews, the study found that learners utilized various digital media such as storytelling, movies, variety shows, and song videos to aid their speaking learning process. The findings indicated that digital media played a significant role in helping learners overcome language anxiety by providing a platform for practice without direct peer interaction, thereby reducing feelings of fear and shyness. Additionally, digital media usage contributed to linguistic element enhancement, including vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and speaking fluency. Moreover, learners’ motivation for developing speaking skills was positively influenced by the enjoyment derived from using digital media which increased their willingness to practice speaking. The study underscores the importance of integrating digital media into EFL speaking instruction due to its potential to address language anxiety, improve linguistic elements, and foster motivation for speaking ability development. By leveraging digital media tools effectively, educators can create engaging and supportive learning milieus that provide to the diverse needs of language learners, eventually enhancing learners’ speaking skills.

Abstract

Many students struggle with reading comprehension due to limited vocabulary and lack of background knowledge, often leading to insufficient understanding of texts. While research has extensively explored reading comprehension at primary and secondary levels, challenges in higher education, particularly in Islamic-based institutions, remain underexamined. This study investigates the difficulties faced by Indonesian university teachers in teaching reading comprehension within such a context. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combined qualitative data from non-participatory observations and semi-structured interviews with quantitative survey data. Participants included three English teachers teaching reading comprehension at a university in Malang, Indonesia, selected through purposeful sampling for their direct classroom engagement and ability to provide first-hand insights. Data analysis involved data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions to identify recurring themes and patterns, combined with descriptive statistics to summarize survey results of the identified challenges. The findings reveal multifaceted challenges of teaching reading, stemming from both instructional and student-related factors, such as limited vocabulary mastery, low motivation, and inadequate resources. These findings emphasize the need for better professional development, resource management, and strategic intervention to support students and teachers. The study offers valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and researchers to improve instructional practices in Indonesian higher education.

Abstract

This study aims to address the challenges in improving students' speaking skills at State Islamic Senior High School 2 Tulungagung through the implementation of the Role Play method. The focus of this study is: (1) to describe the implementation of the Role Play method in Arabic language teaching, and (2) to identify the challenges and solutions during the implementation process. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with the subject of Arabic language learning using the Role Play method. The data sources include teachers, students, and learning documents. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, and were then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that the Role Play method is implemented through stages of providing context, role assignment, dialogue practice, and role performance in the classroom. The teacher acts as a facilitator, while the students actively participate in the role-playing activities. This implementation makes the learning process more dynamic and contextual, and proves effective in improving students' speaking abilities. Keywords: Arabic, Role Play Method, Speaking Skills

Abstract

Film sebagai produk budaya populer merupakan ruang representasi dinamika sosial, termasuk relasi kuasa yang dikonstruksikan melalui bahasa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis variasi bahasa dan representasinya terhadap identitas sosial serta kekuasaan dalam film animasi distopia Arab, "Alephia 2053". Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis wacana sosiolinguistik, penelitian ini mengkaji bagaimana dialog antartokoh merefleksikan struktur sosial yang hierarkis. Data utama berasal dari transkripsi dialog film yang dianalisis menggunakan teori variasi bahasa Chaer (dari segi penutur, pemakaian, dan tingkat keformalan). Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa tokoh-tokoh yang memegang otoritas (rezim dan militer) secara konsisten menggunakan variasi bahasa yang formal, direktif, dan beku untuk menegaskan dominasi dan menciptakan jarak sosial. Sebaliknya, kelompok perlawanan menggunakan ragam konsultatif, santai, dan akrab untuk membangun solidaritas dan identitas kolektif. Temuan ini menyimpulkan bahwa pilihan variasi bahasa dalam film ini berfungsi sebagai arena pertarungan simbolis, di mana bahasa menjadi alat untuk melegitimasi hegemoni kekuasaan atau justru menjadi medium strategis untuk melakukan perlawanan.

Abstract

This research explores the interplay of social memory, identity, and social solidarity in the Muslim community in Thailand. The research uses an exploratory sequential mixed-method design. First, a total of 150 participants were involved in the quantitative approach which obtained through an online survey and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test the research hypotheses. The second stage involved interviews with fithteen Muslim community leaders to investigate how individual and collective practices contribute to preserving the community's identity, tolerance and social memory. The findings reveal that social solidarity, reflected in mosque gatherings, cultural events, mutual support systems, and collective economic initiatives, is crucial in preserving tolerance, social memory and reinforcing communal identity. Solitary religious practices, like prayer and reflection, enhanced individual connections to the community's history, while participation in communal activities strengthened shared identity. The Muslim community leaders identified the mosque as a religious centre and a hub for transmitting historical knowledge and fostering religious moderation and social cohesion. This result extending the understanding of how social memory and identity are maintained in Thai Muslim communities, particularly minority groups like Phu Khao Thong. Particularly in light of modernisation and evolving socio-economic conditions globally.
