Abstract

Peel-off type facial skin mask preparations from herbal/synthetic ingredients can have the advantages of being easily removed, such as elastic membranes, improving hydration of the skin, treating wrinkles, aging, and acne, shrinking pores, moisturizing the skin, and relaxing facial muscles. Posbindu partner cadres in the working area of Puskesmas Pasirkaliki, Cimahi City, feel that there is still a lack of understanding and skill level in making simple cosmetic preparations from herbal ingredients, especially peel-off type facial skin mask preparations. Thus, we, as an extension team from the Community Partnership Program (PKM) grant scheme, strive to provide booklets, counseling on various facial skin health materials, and training assistance in making peel-off type facial skin masks with simple formulations of a combination of Marchantia paleacea liver moss herbaceous plants and green tea leaves to posbindu partner cadres in the Pasirkaliki Puskesmas Working Area,  North Cimahi Village, Cimahi City. The mixed results of this community service activity indicate that there are benefits, such as a significant increase in the level of health understanding in the results of pre-test and post-test evaluations of various health education that have been provided, including the importance of utilizing peel-off type facial skin mask preparations from traditional herbal ingredients and Posbindu partner cadres as agents of change are expected to convey health information and skills that obtained so that it can be conveyed to the immediate family and the rest of the community in general

Abstract

Background: The peel of the fruit Citrus reticulata Blanco has long been used in traditional medicine due to its various properties. Traditional medicine from certain parts of medicinal plants is related to the content of bioactive compounds from the fruit's peel, such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids that can help protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the total levels of phenolics and flavonoids as well as antioxidants from ethanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane extracts from the skin of Citrus reticulata Blanco using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil) and ABTS (2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulphonate))) methods. Material and Methods: The extraction process was carried out using the maceration ion method with ethanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane solvents at room temperature for 24 hours. Total phenolic and flavonoid levels in the extract were determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and antioxidant activity testing was determined based on the extract's ability to neutralize free radicals from DPPH and ABTS. Results: The results showed that the ethanol extract of Citrus reticulata Blanco fruit peel had higher total phenolic and flavonoid levels compared to ethyl acetate and n-hexane extracts. The total phenolic levels in ethanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane extracts were 142.02, 74.60, and 57.17 mg GAE/g, respectively. The total flavonoid levels in ethanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane extracts were 45.96, 40.22, and 38.54 mg QE/g, respectively. In addition, ethanol extract has also shown the strongest antioxidant activity based on the results of testing with DPPH and ABTS methods. The inhibitory concentration (IC50) of ethanol extract against DPPH and ABTS methods was 23,490 μg/mL and 31,971 μg/mL, respectively, with strong category. Conclusions: This study shows that the skin of Citrus reticulata Blanco fruit contains phenolic compounds and flavonoids that have the potential as natural antioxidants, with ethanol extract being the most promising related to total phenolic and flavonoid levels and antioxidant activity. This information can be used as a basis for developing pharmaceutical dosage products and health supplements that can potentially improve antioxidant/health status in the body.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases cause 71% of deaths in the world, one of which is caused by dyslipidemia. Dyslipidemia has been established as a cause of various non-communicable diseases such as obesity and heart disease. This study aims to determine the antihyperlipidemic activity of the ethanol extract of the liverworts of Marchantia paleacea (EEMP) and the rhizome of Zingiber officinale var. rubrum (EEZOR) on male mice induced by Triton X-100. Grouping the number of test animals per group based on the Federer formula. Triton X-100 is used as an inducer of hyperlipidemic given intraperitoneally at a dose of 140 mg/kg body weight. Total cholesterol levels were measured by the colorimetric enzymatic method (CHOD-PAP) using a UV-Vis clinic photometer. Results from ethanol extract of the herb liverwort Marchantia paleacea (EEMP) and red ginger rhizomes Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum (EEZOR) can respectively reduce total hypercholesterol levels in male mice induced by Triton X-100 whose data were analyzed using the One-Way Anova test. The results of optimal dose of EEMP 200 mg/kg bw had the highest percentage of antihyperlipidemic activity and effectiveness (%) and also had a significant reduction in total cholesterol levels compared to the negative control group (p<0.05). While the results for the optimal dose of EEZOR 1000 mg/kg bw with the highest percentage of activity and effectiveness (%) and having a significant decrease compared to the negative control group (p <0.05). In conclusion, these findings suggest that both extracts have potential as natural antihyperlipidemic agents that can be further explored in the management of hyperlipidemic (dyslipidemic) and related non-communicable diseases.
