Abstract

The tuna longline is a commonly used fishing gear among fishermen, especially in Benoa, Bali, for capturing large pelagic fish, primarily tuna, in offshore waters over an extended period. This study aims to identify the techniques for operating tuna longlines and to observe the handling process of the catch on the KM Mutiara 26 vessel. The research employs a qualitative descriptive analysis method. Findings indicate that the longline operation on KM Mutiara 26 involves preparatory steps followed by three operational phases: setting, soak time, and hauling. The fishing operations were conducted in the Indian Ocean at coordinates 30° – 32° South Latitude and 103° East Longitude. KM Mutiara 26 is a 122 GT fiberglass vessel powered by a 671 KW Cummins engine and equipped with 11 refrigerated holds. The vessel operates on a two-month cycle. The main catch species was southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii), with a total of 242 fish, while the lowest catch was albacore (Thunnus alalunga), with 24 fish. Fish handling involved a four-step process, and storage of the catch was carried out using a freezing method.

Abstract

Bitung City is one of the centers for fisheries production, with the main commodity being capture fisheries, specifically small pelagic fish (mackerel scad (decapterus), mackerel fish (Rastrelliger), tuna (Euthynnus affinis) , and anchovy (Stolephorus indicus)). The purpose of this research is to describe the construction of a floating net cage to support the successful capture of small pelagic fish. The study was conducted from October to December 2024. The data collection methods used were observation and direct interviews with fishermen, and the data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that the construction of the lift net includes: a wooden frame measuring 9.5 x 8.5 meters, wooden and net enclosures measuring 3x3 meters, 24 LED lights, a polyethylene net (Cang) measuring 9.5x8.5 meters, a guard house made of wood measuring 2x2 meters, 15 river stones as weights, 4 sand-filled anchors in bags, 12 brass rings, 1 wooden reel, and 24 styrofoam buoy floats.

Abstract

The waters of Bitung, located in North Sulawesi Province, have long been known for their rich underwater biodiversity, specifically unique and exotic creatures. They are a potential demersal fishing ground for coastal fishermen in Bitung City. However, information on demersal fishing grounds is limited, so it is necessary to conduct research and map demersal fishing grounds in Bitung waters. This study aims to obtain data on the geographical position of demersal fishing areas in Bitung waters to be mapped into a map of demersal fishing areas in Bitung waters and determine the types of catches from bottom fishing rods. Data was collected directly by following demersal fishing operations on the training ship FV. Coelacanth. The data were analyzed using survey methods and direct observation, which is an effort to collect information directly from a part of the population that is considered a specified population and has the nature of authentication or checking of existing theories. The study's results obtained geographical data on demersal fishing areas in Bitung waters at (1) 10°23.447' N, 125°06.934' E (Suar Batu Kapal area),, (2) 10°23.483' N, 125°09.567' E (Karang Tanjung Merah area) (3) 10°23.283' N, 125°10.852' E (Batu Angus Area), (4) 10°30.393' N, 125°15.392' E (Menara Lampu Hijau Area), and (5) 10°32.706' N, 125°18.105' E (Dua Pulau area). The primary catches of bottom fishing consist of fish species: grouper, snapper, trevally fish, Gora fish, emperor fish and parrot fish.
