Abstract

Planting patterns and seasonal variability strongly influence the diversity, dynamics, and species composition of understory vegetation in teak (Tectona grandis), a deciduous tree species. This study aimed to assess species diversity, dynamics, and composition of understory vegetation under agroforestry (AF) and monoculture (MN) teak systems during the wet season (WS) and dry season (DS). Field surveys were conducted in February–March and July–August 2023 in teak production forests managed by Perum Perhutani, Kalipare District, Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia. A total of 117 systematically distributed 1 × 1 m plots were established, consisting of 27 plots in AF and 90 plots in MN stands, with 5 m spacing between plots. Plot locations were recorded using a Global Positioning System (GPS). Within each plot, understory species composition, percentage cover of vegetation, litter, and bare soil were recorded, and Sørensen similarity indices were calculated. Environmental variables measured included canopy openness and rainfall. Canopy openness was quantified using hemispherical photographs taken at 1 m above ground level with a 360° camera and analyzed using GLA 2.0 software. Rainfall data were obtained from the local climatological station. The results revealed clear differences in understory species composition between AF and MN systems. Monoculture teak stands supported 49 species belonging to 23 families, whereas agroforestry stands contained 35 species from 16 families. Vegetation composition and structure differed substantially between AF and MN systems. Understory diversity in MN stands during the dry season was higher than in AF stands, likely because agroforestry practices in the study area resemble intensive monoculture of annual crops. Canopy openness and rainfall were identified as significant drivers influencing understory vegetation cover.

Abstract

This study investigates the utilization of waste cooking oil (WCO) as a biodiesel feedstock using a heterogeneous catalyst derived from cuttlefish bone. The catalyst was modified via Sr(NO₃)₂ impregnation at different composition ratios (98:2, 95:5, and 90:10 % w/v) to produce CaO–SrO catalysts, followed by chemical activation with NaOH (2, 4, and 6 g). Catalyst characterization was conducted using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to examine surface morphology, elemental distribution, and crystalline phases. The results indicate that the catalyst with a 90:10 CaO–SrO composition and 6 g NaOH activation (C90S10–N6) exhibited the most homogeneous surface morphology, uniform Sr dispersion, and enhanced phase stability. Transesterification of WCO under a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 9:1, catalyst loading of 1 wt%, and reaction time of 2 h resulted in a biodiesel yield of 95.5%. The produced biodiesel showed a density of 0.87 g/mL, water content of 0.64%, calorific value of 38.52 MJ/kg, and a reduction in free fatty acid (FFA) content from 2.84% to 1.71%. These findings demonstrate that SrO-modified CaO catalysts derived from cuttlefish bone are effective, sustainable, and economically viable for enhancing biodiesel production from waste cooking oil.

Abstract

Abstract

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is a plant that can grow on uplands and lowlands. Domestic demand for sugar continuehus to increase in line with population growth and industrial development, but domestic sugar production has not been able to meet this demand. Efforts to increase sugarcane productivity and sugar production can be optimized through adaptive, high-yielding, superior sugarcane varieties. This study revealed morphological differences among six sugarcane varieties, namely PSJT 941, PS 865, PS 862, Bululawang, PA 028, and Kidang Kencana. The results of the study indicate significant morphological differences between varieties. PS 865 exhibits superior vegetative growth with the tallest plant height (224.33 cm) and stem diameter (39.33 mm), while PA 028 demonstrates highly stable characteristics with a coefficient of variation of 4.37%, indicating suitability across various environments. PS 862 and PSJT 941 exhibited longer roots and greater fresh weight, indicating adaptability to wetter conditions. Cluster analysis grouped the six varieties into two major clusters: Cluster 1 (Bululawang, Kidang Kencana, PSJT 941, PS 862) and Cluster 2 (PS 865, PA 032), showing differences in morphological structure.

Abstract

Adequate lighting is crucial for supporting comfortable and effective classroom learning. This study evaluated the artificial lighting levels in a second-floor classroom on the C Building of Semarang State Polytechnic using a digital luxmeter. The research method used was to measure artificial lighting locally and generally. The final measurement results were compared to SNI 03-6575-2001, which requires a minimum value of 350 lux for classrooms. The measurements showed that most points had lighting values below 200 lux, indicating that the lighting did not meet the standard. The low lighting levels were caused by several malfunctioning lamps and uneven light distribution due to suboptimal fixture layout and room reflectance. These findings indicate the need for lighting system improvements to enhance visual comfort and support the learning process.

Abstract

The development of the digital era demands data literacy skills as a basic 21st-century skill that is important for junior high school students. Based on observations at SMPK Satya Wacana Salatiga, most students still experience difficulties in understanding, interpreting, and using data in learning. This community service activity aims to improve students' data literacy through hands-on practice-based training with an interactive and contextual learning approach. The implementation method includes socialization, data concept training, data processing simulations using spreadsheets and R software, and evaluation through pre-tests and post-tests. The results showed a significant increase in data analysis skills. The average pre-test score of 3.11 increased to 3.84 in the post-test, with an average normalized gain (K) of 0.40, which is included in the medium category. The paired t-test produced a value of t = -12.49 and p-value = 0.000 (p-value < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the results before and after the training. A total of 44 students were in the medium improvement category, 38 students were low, and 19 students were high. These findings indicate that R-based data literacy training is effective in improving junior high school students' conceptual understanding, self-confidence, and analytical skills, and is relevant to be developed as a 21st-century learning model.
