Abstract

Context plays a crucial role in language use, as it shapes the meaning of text interaction or communication. The exploration of the conceptualization of contexts in contemporary language studies, including cybertextual contexts, has long been debated among linguists. With the emergence of computer-mediated communication, social identity cues within cybertextual contexts have become an important area of inquiry. This research examined cyberpragmatics by analyzing textual environments through a socio-semiotic multimodal lens. Drawing on Leech’s perspective on general pragmatics, the notion of ‘context’ acquires a broader dimension, encompassing the circumstances surrounding digital interactions beyond the immediate social environment. This study employed online observation, expert-based selection, verification, classification, and interpretation to discover the communicative functions of the cybertextual contexts in the digital media environment. Based on a socio-semiotic multimodal analysis of six multimodality cybertextual contexts data, the findings identified six functions of cybertextual contexts: (1) providing background for intent delivery, (2) affirming intent delivery, (3) illustrating intent delivery, (4) shaping intent interpretation, (5) complementing intent conveyance, and (6) describing intent and meaning. Theoretically, this research highlighted the roles of visual, spatial, gestural, and aural contexts within cyberpragmatics. Empirically, this research illustrates the relationship between language and context in digital environments to uncover the evolving nature of communication in cyberspace.

Abstract

This article reports an investigation of university students’ use of online Wikipedia site in writing their assignment or research report. Data were collected through a survey questionnaire and interview. First of all, a survey questionnaire was distributed among the learners (n=70) identifying their computer and internet literacy, frequency, strategy, and future orientation of using Wikipedia for their writing assignments or essays. Then, interviews with some lecturers (N=8) revealed teachers’ lack of awareness and agreement of Wikipedia in academic writing, partially due to the absence of Departmental policy. As the results, despite being already informed of the encyclopedia’s academic unreliability, Indonesian EFL informants in this study were proven to be familiar with computer and capable of using internet and incorporating Wikipedia materials when writing their essays at Andalas University. The data also indicated that students had improved their techniques of using the Wikipedia from copying-and-pasting to editing and paraphrasing. Half of them did not cross check Wikipedia article’s citations and references. Therefore, students’ awareness of the ease of Wikipedia may have encouraged them to consciously plagiarize in addition to the absence of their lecturers’ awareness upon this issue.

Abstract

Background. The proliferation of social media has fundamentally reshaped public discourse, creating powerful new arenas for climate change communication. Youth activists, in particular, have adeptly leveraged these platforms to mobilize global environmental campaigns, bypassing traditional media gatekeepers. This research addresses the need to understand the specific communication strategies employed by these digital-native activists to engage audiences and drive collective action. Purpose. This study aims to identify and analyze the primary communication strategies used by youth-led environmental campaigns on social media platforms. Method. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, this research conducts a content analysis of social media posts from prominent youth activist campaigns across Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok. The analysis focuses on message framing, narrative techniques, visual elements, and calls to action. Results. The findings reveal a multi-faceted communication strategy that combines strong emotional appeals and personal storytelling with the simplification and visualization of complex scientific data. Furthermore, a consistent and clear call to action, often linked to specific policy demands or lifestyle changes, is a central component of these campaigns. Conclusion. This study concludes that the effectiveness of youth-led climate campaigns on social media lies in their ability to create a relatable, urgent, and empowering narrative that fosters a sense of shared identity and collective efficacy among their followers.
