Abstract

This study investigates how game mechanics influence gender performance through clothing choices in Empress's Choice. The game was first launched on mobile devices, chromebook, and tablets in June 2022. Players would be able to enjoy the game on a variety of platforms. This study employs content analysis to explore game mechanics and in-game elements, specifically focusing on how they affect the players' construction of their characters' gender. The analysis is limited to chapters featuring dressing-up and destiny event stages, where clothing choices are central to gameplay. Judith Butler's theory of performativity is a framework to examine whether the game reinforces traditional gender norms or encourages players to subvert them. The findings reveal that, despite the game's emphasis on player choices, the mechanics, especially those related to clothing and its associated features, still largely adhere to conventional gender expectations. The main character (player) is constructed to be female by repeatedly donning feminine clothes in mostly bright colors and elaborate accessories. All categories of clothing (type, color, and accessories) in the game have a particular bias towards traditional feminine elements. Therefore, during dress-up stages, players have limited choices in gender expression besides the feminine style dictated by the mechanics. However, the in-game actions, part of destiny events, show a contrasting experience. These events give players choices that impact the story without imposing specific gendered behaviors. This complexity indicates that limitations and opportunities to challenge gender norms exist in Empress's Choice through its game mechanics.

Abstract

This study performs content analysis on an Android game titled Legend of the Phoenix. Legend of the Phoenix, commonly known as LoP, is an otome (girl) game released by Modo Game in 2020. Like most otome games, Legend of the Phoenix revolves around the journey of a young woman who is given a second chance at life after her first ends tragically. The player takes the role of this young woman and has to complete various missions and storylines in order to complete the game. This study aims to find messages about gender presented in the game by analyzing its visual and narrative content. It focuses on identifying female masculinity in the special recruitment group of Female General or Heroine. The game characters being analyzed are the four Generals in Legend of the Phoenix"”Hua Mulan, Mu Guiying, Liang Hongyu, and Qin Liangyu. They are examined in terms of role, abilities, and appearance and their relation to the concept of female masculinity introduced by Halberstam. The result shows that the Female General belongs to Femme Pretender type. It means that the characters of Hua Mulan, Mu Guiying, Liang Hongyu, and Qin Liangyu possess masculine traits (role and abilities) while also keeping their female appearance (physical and outfit).

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program aims to address the need for integrating local cultural elements into German language education for high school teachers in Surabaya and its surrounding areas. The focus of this initiative is to help German teachers incorporate East Javanese culture into their lessons using modern technology, particularly through AI-assisted poster design. The importance of this topic stems from the need to preserve local cultural heritage while enhancing language learning, fostering a deeper connection between students’ cultural identity and their foreign language education. The program was conducted in three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The preparation phase involved compiling accessible learning materials and ensuring all necessary resources were ready for the training sessions. The implementation phase provided hands-on workshops that introduced teachers to AI design tools such as Canva, Fotor, Piktochart, and ChatGPT, alongside instruction on poster design principles, including layout, typography, and bilingual content creation. In the evaluation phase, participants received feedback on their projects and refined their posters, integrating both German language elements and East Javanese cultural themes. The results demonstrated high participant engagement and successful skill development in using AI tools to create culturally relevant educational materials. Teachers produced bilingual cultural posters that effectively combined language instruction with local heritage promotion. This initiative not only enhanced teachers’ technological competencies but also strengthened their ability to integrate cultural content into their lessons, ensuring the preservation and appreciation of East Javanese culture in the context of German language education.
