Abstract

Suicidal ideation is a significant mental health issue that has gained considerable attention, especially among adolescents. The psychological, social, and emotional changes that occur during adolescence often increase their vulnerability to mental health disorders. Various factors, both internal and external, can influence the emergence of suicidal ideation, including life meaning, which can affect an individual's tendency toward suicidal thoughts. Life meaning refers to how individuals assign meaning to their lives, which is believed to function as a protective mechanism against feelings of hopelessness and the tendency to end one's life. This study aims to examine the relationship between these two variables in adolescents. A quantitative approach with a correlational design and simple linear regression analysis was used in this study. The variables of suicidal ideation and life meaning were measured using a Likert scale. The sample consisted of 100 adolescents aged 12-21 years in Yogyakarta, with data collected through questionnaires distributed via Google Form and paper-based formats. Data analysis was conducted using Spearman's test with SPSS for Windows version 26. The results indicated a significant negative relationship between suicidal ideation and life meaning, with a correlation coefficient of -0.548 and a significance value of ρ = 0.000 (ρ < 0.05).

Abstract

Emotional regulation includes efforts to accept emotions, control impulsive behavior, and the ability to use emotional regulation strategies appropriately and flexibly according to situational demands. It plays a significant role in maintaining mental well-being and fostering healthy interpersonal relationships. This study aims to explore and describe the emotional regulation strategies employed by only children, given the unique familial and social environment in which they are raised. The subjects in this study were three only children aged between 15 and 21 years, selected using purposive sampling techniques. The research employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to gain a deep un-derstanding of their emotional experiences and regulation strategies. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that all three subjects were gen-erally able to regulate their emotions effectively. They demonstrated self-awareness of their emotional states and employed various coping strategies, such as engaging in enjoyable activities like listening to music, exercising, journaling, or spending time in nature. In moments of emotional distress, they tended to seek social interaction rather than withdrawing or isolating themselves. This proactive engagement helped them maintain emotional balance and gain support from their social environment. Additionally, the subjects showed an ability to reflect on their feelings and manage impulsive reactions in challenging situations. Family support, particularly from parents, was found to play a crucial role in shaping their emotional coping mechanisms. The study concludes that only children, despite not having siblings, are capable of developing healthy emotional regulation skills through supportive environments and adap-tive personal strategies.

Abstract

Self-harm among university students has emerged as an increasingly urgent mental-health concern globally, yet research examining culturally specific risk mechanisms remains limited, particularly in Indonesian contexts where paternal roles are socially salient and emotional disclosure is often constrained. This study investigates whether childhood trauma moderates the association between fatherlessness and self-harm tendencies among late-adolescent university students. Using a quantitative correlational design, 123 participants completed validated measures of fatherlessness, childhood trauma, and self-harm. Data were analyzed using simple regression and Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). Results indicated that fatherlessness positively predicts self-harm (β = 0.85, t = 17.75, p < .001) and childhood trauma is also strongly associated with self-harm (β = 0.65, t = 5.78, p < .001). More importantly, childhood trauma strengthened the positive relationship between fatherlessness and self-harm (interaction β = 0.14, t = 3.32, p = .001), demonstrating a quasi-moderation effect consistent with attachment disruption and developmental trauma frameworks. The final model explained 79.4% of the variance in self-harm, underscoring the combined role of paternal disengagement and early adversity in shaping students’ emotional vulnerability. These findings highlight the need for trauma-informed, family-aware mental-health services in higher-education settings, including early screening, psychoeducation, and resilience-building interventions for high-risk groups.

Abstract

This research delves into the interplay between how frequently young adults in Yogyakarta engage with the Qur’an and their levels of anxiety about what the future holds. Early adulthood is often marked by uncertainty and stress, stemming from both personal struggles and external pressures such as societal expectations and shifting relationships. To investigate this dynamic, the study employed a quantitative, correlational approach, drawing data from 96 randomly selected participants within the target age group. Data collection relied on a validated and reliable Likert-scale questionnaire to ensure robust measurement. The core findings reveal a notable association: individuals who read the Qur’an more regularly tend to report lower levels of future-oriented anxiety. This suggests that the act of reading the Qur’an may serve as a practical tool for managing worries about the future, offering psychological benefits beyond its spiritual significance for young adults navigating life in Yogyakarta.
