Abstract

This research aimed to learn what the students thought about using collaborative techniques in writing a text. A case study was chosen as the research design in this research, with a qualitative approach. Data collection for this research was interviews. The researcher utilized interviews to get a deeper understanding of students' perspectives. To evaluate the data, the researcher applied theories from Miles et al. (2014). Based on the interviews, the researcher concluded that students preferred collaborative writing over writing alone because it was quicker, simpler, and more enjoyable. This was supported by the research's findings. Along with the benefits, students also experienced challenges due to individuality and differences in opinion when writing text through collaborative techniques.

Abstract

Research has revealed that pre-service teachers at the start of the practicum frequently experience excitement and nervousness, shock and embarrassment once they begin teaching, and guilt and regret somewhere at completion of the practicum (Zhu, 2017). Based on this problem, the study aims to explore the emotions of a male EFL pre-service teacher when undergoing English teaching practicum during COVID-19 outbreak in Indonesian academic settings and the strategies used to cope with such emotional challenges. The data were derived from interviews and diary entries and were then transcribed, arranged based on needs, and analyzed thematically using the “Emotional Geography” framework (Hargreaves, 2001a) which focusing on five emotional dimensions: physical, moral, socio-cultural, professional and political. Research findings indicate that during teaching practicum activities affected by COVID-19, the participant experienced such negative feelings such as nervousness, fear, anxiety, shock, confusion, clueless, stress, overwhelmed Ness, and powerless. However, the pre-service teacher also felt positive feelings such as compassion, happiness, relaxedness, calmness, gratitude and enjoyment after building close bonds with the community members. By this study, the researchers hope to provide broader insights and practical benefits for teachers and pre-service English teachers’ development in which they can take advantage of current research results to find out what feelings might be faced in implementing English teaching practicum and what strategies can be developed and implemented to overcome these emotional problems.

Abstract

Cognitive Domains are important in the instructions and questions for learning tasks in the textbook, especially for helping students improve their thinking skills. The aim of this study was to analyze the cognitive process and knowledge dimension of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy represented in the writing tasks provided in the “English for Nusantara” for seventh-grade students. This research was content analysis. This study used a checklist instrument. The research revealed that writing tasks in the textbook covered five of six categories of the cognitive process of revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. The most used level of cognitive process was the remembering level. In terms of Knowledge Dimension, all Knowledge Dimensions existed in the writing tasks of the textbook. Writing tasks belong involving factual knowledge were most dominant. In other words, the writing task of the textbook put more emphasis on LOTS rather than HOTS and they were not evenly distributed in every chapter. This indicated that the writing task in the textbook is not appropriate with achievements of junior high school English learning in the Merdeka curriculum. Therefore, the textbook needs to be evaluated to be consistent with the achievements of junior high school English learning in the Merdeka curriculum. Teachers can also modify learning or use other supporting textbooks which are consistent with the Merdeka curriculum.

Abstract

This research investigates the experiences of a seasoned teacher who specializes in teaching English to young learners through virtual means. Virtual learning has gained popularity due to its numerous benefits, and the teacher in question possesses a strong background in language and experience with virtual learning, even prior to the government’s implementation of online learning policies during the pandemic. The study explores various lessons encountered by the teacher in her virtual classroom, including learning methodologies, maintaining motivation among young learners during distance learning, and addressing challenges and difficulties. Through comprehensive interviews with the teacher and corroborating evidence from other sources, this study demonstrates the value of teaching English to young learners through virtual means. Utilizing narrative inquiry as a research design, this study presents all significant findings in a narrative format. The results comprise eight key lessons for other language teachers to implement in their own classrooms, whether virtual or direct learning. These lessons include the teacher’s motivation, choice of media, learning methodologies, learning objectives, learning activities for young learners, practical application of English in real life, and exploration of young learners’ language skills during the learning process.

Abstract

The use of mobile applications in the classroom offers the possibility of future innovation and can facilitate the teaching and learning process anywhere. Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) technology makes learning easier for students (Kukulska & Viberg, 2018). This research aims to determine students' responses to the application of MALL in learning reading comprehension in the classroom. This research uses a qualitative case study method, by conducting observations, interviews and documentation in data collection carried out at one of the high schools in Bekasi. This research uses thematic analysis data analysis theory developed by Braun and Clarke (2006) which consists of six steps. Based on the data collected, it was found that teachers have used Webtoon MALL as a fun learning strategy to help students learn English in reading sessions. Students respond well to this approach. The MALL used in learning to help students with reading comprehension is a Webtoon application that gets enthusiasm from students as a fun learning model.
