Abstract

Coral reef, the most diverse and highly valuable marine ecosystem, may be influenced by bleaching. This study aimed to determine the effect of turbidity on the severity of coral bleaching and mortality due to thermal stress and high solar irradiation caused by the 2015 El Niño event. Coral colonies in eighteen permanent bleaching belt transects (50 m x 1 m) in six sites were observed from June to November 2015, coinciding with the 2015 El Niño event. Environmental factors: water depth, sea surface temperature (SST), salinity, turbidity, sedimentation and total suspended solid (TSS) were measured on the same transect. The results of the study showed that the 2015 El Niño event was a major disaster for reefs on the southeast coast of the Kalimantan. Of total colonies (N = 12,954), 45.4% of colonies were bleached and 14.7% of colonies died during the period of July to November 2015. Turbidity, TSS, and sedimentation were negatively correlated with the bleaching mortality index (BMI). Coral bleaching in clear and deep waters occurred earlier and increased rapidly compared to that in turbid waters. However, the severity of coral bleaching in the turbid zone increased dramatically when the turbidity dropped to <3 NTU. Turbidity >5 NTU could provide shade, in which the proportion of dead corals was only 3.5%. The severity of coral bleaching in the turbid zone is not solely due to thermal stress and solar irradiation; it may also be influenced by a history of exposure to high turbidity and low salinity.

Abstract

The handling of slum areas in Banjarmasin City uses more restoration patterns than renewal and resettlement patterns, and is carried out on land locations only, while riverbank slums are more directed towards rejuvenation and relocation patterns. Evaluation of riverbank space after the arrangement of slum areas in Banjarmasin City, South Kalimantan Province needs to be done in order to analyze the planning principles of handling riverbank slum areas after the implementation/arrangement process and see what factors can determine the success of the handling. Data collection techniques were carried out by literature review, field observations/observations, interviews/FGDs, and distributing questionnaires/digital questionnaires (google form). The sample selection technique used was purposive sampling. The data analysis method used is qualitative and quantitative, which combines descriptive research and percentage numbers. The findings were obtained in the form of analysis of planning principles in the form of slum handling indicators, the level of collaboration of basic elements of slum handling stakeholders and the extent of public/open space in the handling area. then this research also produces factors that determine the success of handling in the form of the level of community satisfaction by utilizing well-operational development infrastructure.

Abstract

South Kalimantan is one of the provinces in Indonesia which has a high risk of flood disasters seen from its physical condition, which geographically is mostly located below sea level. In 2021, 11 out of a total of 13 districts and cities in South Kalimantan were affected by flooding on a large scale, which caused tens of thousands of residents to suffer losses and even lost family members. IBFWS (Impact Base Forecast and Warning Services) is present as the latest innovation from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency as an impact-based weather forecast information service. To determine the accuracy of the IBFWS service information, it is necessary to validate the prediction results issued by IBFWS with the actual situation. By using spatial analysis methods, it is hoped that it can describe which areas are potentially affected by flooding and continued with the calculation of the contingency table so that the accuracy value of IBFWS is obtained in predicting areas potentially affected by flooding in South Kalimantan. IBFWS validation results in predicting areas potentially affected by flooding in South Kalimantan during the rainy season range between 0.85 – 1.00 which mean 85% - 100% the IBFWS prediction results are correct, during the transition season in general is 0.77 which mean 77% the IBFWS prediction results are correct, and during the dry season it ranges between 0.92 – 1.00 which mean 92% - 100% the IBFWS prediction results are correct.
