For this purpose, the study will use a focus group discussion approach, which is a method of discussion with several stakeholders to provide innovative design ideas in the development of streetscape that has meaning in sustainable urban development, because stakeholder participation is an important key factor in the sustainable design process. The expected result of this research is to develop innovative streetscape designs in the corridor by develop the potentials and still maintaining the cultural heritage buildings.

Abstract

Mobility contributes to quality of life (Muller, 2016). In Indonesia, shopping centre buildings and urban pedestrian spaces have not been supporting each other in accommodating public pedestrian mobility. It lets people to drive more automobiles instead of walking even though their settlements are actually convenient from the commercial places. This problem is further causing the other matters such as traffic jam, accidence, air pollution, anxiety, and so on. By considering this problem, it is important to transform the design criteria of the modern shopping centre building to be not only serving as commercial destinations, but also space for public pedestrians that provides good mobility in urban environment, so that the walking lifestyle could be popular again in Indonesia. This research is aimed to identify design criteria of modern shopping centre buildings that are based on public pedestrian space. The criteria is expected to be new standard in planning and designing future shopping centre buildings in Indonesian cities. The Evaluative Method is utilized in this research involving a theory of Urban Mobility as the main parameter.

Abstract

Urban sprawl is a phenomenon characterized by the accidental movement of residents from the downtown to the urban periphery. This urban sprawl phenomenon tends to hurt the urban boundary. The concept of spatial hybrid can indirectly be indicated as a form of sustainable urban development that overcomes the problems caused by the negative ImpactImpact of urban sprawl in the urban periphery. This study uses the constructivism paradigm. The strategy in this research is a combination of qualitative research and case studies. It specifically selected case studies in the area of Darmo Permai Surabaya-Indonesia. The Darmo Permai area is a form of urban sprawl that began in 1973. The Darmo Permai area finds harmony between the newcomer and residents through an adaptation process. This harmony is manifested in a hybrid space analyzed from the social aspect of sustainability. The hybrid space is founded based on the activities of its residents, which are characterized by five aspects of the hybrid space. The five aspects of the hybrid space are coexistence, transfusion, interconnection, ambivalence, and heterogeneity.
