Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the stratification of Javanese language use in rural communities in East Java and analyze its implications for Javanese language learning. This research is motivated by changes in the use of Javanese by the younger generation, which can weaken the value of polite language in social interactions. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, and data collection was conducted through interviews and observations. Data were obtained from several sources from several villages in East Java. The Communication Accommodation Theory (Giles) was used to study the patterns of convergence, divergence, and over-accommodation in language use. Data analysis was carried out through presentation, drawing conclusions, and reduction. The results of the study indicate that social status, age, and situational context influence the choice of Javanese language speech level. Divergence appears as an expression of the identity of the modern generation, the process of linguistic convergence shows the efforts of young speakers to adapt to societal standards of politeness. This study found that the use of Javanese is a social mechanism for determining closeness, status, and cultural identity, not just a linguistic system. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of learning polite language based on social context in formal education. By using these findings, teachers can create learning models that emphasize the social function of Javanese so that students understand not only the structure of the language but also the values of politeness and respect contained within it.

Abstract

The phenomenon of single mothers working multiple informal jobs is a common social reality in rural areas, including Mojo Village, Mojo District, Kediri Regency. Divorce or the death of a spouse places single mothers in the position of primary breadwinner and child care provider, necessitating specific strategies to ensure their children's well-being. This study aims to analyze the strategies employed by single mothers in working multiple informal jobs to ensure their children's well-being and to identify the obstacles they face. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection involved observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of five single mothers working multiple informal jobs in Mojo Village. Data analysis employed the Miles and Huberman interactive model, encompassing data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research's analytical framework utilizes a Marxist-Socialist Feminist perspective to examine the interrelationships between women's dual roles, productive and reproductive work, and class and gender relations in the informal sector. The research findings indicate that single mothers' strategies for achieving child well-being include engaging in multiple informal jobs as an economic strategy, managing time and the dual role of work and childcare, managing finances oriented toward children's needs, and utilizing social networks.

Abstract

Whitin the family sphere, violence against women remains a significant social problem that is frequently treated as a private matter. As a cultural medium, film plays an important role in shaping public understanding of such issues through processes of representation. This study applies Stuart Hall’s theory of representation to identify the forms of domestic violence experienced by the female protagonist and to analyze how these forms are depicted in the film Rumah untuk Alie (released 17 April 2025). Using a descriptive qualitative approach and semiotic content analysis, the research draws on primary data from the film and secondary data from books, academic journals, and official reports on violence against women. Data were collected through repeated observation of scenes and documentation of dialogues and visual details. The findings indicate that the film represents three main forms of domestic violence: physical, verbal, and emotional/psychological. Through its narrative structure, dialogue patterns, and visual framing, the film highlights the marginalization of women and demonstrates how violence is embedded within unequal power relations in a patriarchal household. At the same time, the film positions domestic violence both as a normalized family practice and as a critique of broader social structures. Overall, the study underscores that such representations help reveal domestic violence as a structural social issue rather than an individual or private concern.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of style simulation and sign consumption in the “Dress Well” trend on the TikTok platform, which is influenced by Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in Jean Baudrillard's semiotic perspective. TikTok, as a digital visual medium, not only functions as an entertainment space but also as an arena for the production and reproduction of social signs that shape identity, prestige, and lifestyle standards. The “Dress Well” trend is represented through neat, aesthetic, and ideal fashion visuals, which are then constructed as symbols of social status. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing semiotic analysis methods to interpret the meaning of signs in TikTok video content, including visual elements, narratives, hashtags, and digital interactions such as likes and comments. The results show that FoMO acts as the primary driver compelling users to follow trends not based on functional needs, but rather for social recognition and digital identity legitimacy. Fashion consumption in the “Dress Well” trend is no longer oriented towards utility value, but towards sign value that creates simulation and hyperreality. TikTok content shapes a pseudo-reality that appears more real than everyday life, thereby normalizing symbolic consumption patterns. Thus, the “Dress Well” trend represents a practice of digital consumerism that reflects the logic of simulation and hyperreality in contemporary visual culture.

Abstract

The increase in the number of divorce cases filed by high-income women indicates a significant change in gender relations and the meaning of marriage in modern society. This phenomenon is clearly evident in the Sidoarjo Religious Court, where the majority of divorce cases are filed by wives who are economically independent. This study aims to analyze the factors causing divorce and its meaning for high-income women in social, legal, and gender contexts. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data collection was conducted through in depth interviews, observation, and documentation of women filing for divorce at the Sidoarjo Religious Court. Data analysis was conducted descriptively using George Herbert Mead's symbolic interactionism theory to understand divorce lawsuits as social actions shaped through interaction and meaning making processes. The results show that divorce lawsuits are influenced by accumulated domestic conflicts, gender inequality, verbal abuse, infidelity, and the husband's failure to fulfill material and emotional obligations. Economic independence gives women a stronger bargaining position to evaluate and end marriages that are considered unfair. Divorce suits are interpreted as a form of agency, symbolic resistance to unequal relationships, and an effort to maintain dignity and personal well being.
