Abstract

Mangroves participate in controlling climate change by acting as the lungs of the world through the absorption and storage of blue carbon. The high-standing water on the land that must be rehabilitated is one of the obstacles encountered, so a special strategy is needed, namely, implementing a mangrove rehabilitation media structure using the demplot mangrove method. This study aimed to analyze mangrove growth based on the application of mangrove rehabilitation media structures and to calculate potential carbon stocks based on the value of tree biomass from mangrove rehabilitation monitoring. In this study, tree height and diameter were measured and linked to the water quality and frequency of inundation. Mangrove carbon reserves were also calculated based on biomass values. Good growth in the height and diameter of mangroves occurred in Avicennia lanata stands with an inundation frequency of 6 h/day. The largest projection of potential carbon stocks from the results of monitoring mangrove rehabilitation was also stored in Avicennia lanata mangrove stands at 0.3467 kg/tree (60 months), 0.6287 kg/tree (120 months), and 0.9107 kg/tree (180 months).

Abstract

Universitas Diponegoro, with an open forest area and planted vegetation of 30 – 40%, produced vast amounts of organic waste, especially tree litter. Piles of tree litter are everywhere if it is not properly managed. Universitas Diponegoro has taken a comprehensive approach to handling leaf and tree litter by converting it into economically valuable and beneficial products to meet the objectives of SDGs 12, which are focused on Responsible Consumption and Production. Through the Technical Implementation Unit for Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment (UPT K3L) Universitas Diponegoro has pyrolyzed tree branches to create liquid smoke and anaerobically converted leaf waste into compost. Later, the liquid smoke produced by pyrolysis and compost can achieve the consumer demand standard. In addition, from the policy approach, it is mandatory for every building to handle tree litter surrounds into compost using composting pits and composting bags. The circular economy idea has been incorporated into waste management at Universitas Diponegoro.

Abstract

Background: Demak, as a disaster-prone coastal area in Central Java, faces issues such as malnutrition and food insecurity due to the impacts of climate change. As a result of coastal disasters, vulnerable people in coastal areas often experience loss of livelihoods, limited access to nutritious food, and increased risk of malnutrition. Objective: The study aimed to analyze the association between household food security and household demographic factors in Central Java’s coastal areas.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 138 households living in the coastal area of Demak by simple random sampling. The socio-demographic characteristics were conducted by interviewing the mother/child caregiver. The degree of household food security (HFS) was obtained using the Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM) Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square were used for statistical analysis. Results: Based on HFS status, 49.3% of respondents were food secure, 26.1% were food insecure without hunger, 20.3% were food insecure with moderate hunger, and 4.3% were food insecure with severe hunger. There was significant correlation between father’s educational level, mother’s educational level, and monthly household income per month on the HFS status (p<0.05).Conclusion: Sociodemographic factors associated with household food security status were father's and mother's education and monthly household income (p<0.05). The potential negative impact of household food insecurity on the nutritional status of family members needs to be studied further, especially vulnerable age groups such as toddlers and mothers in the household.
