Abstract

Abstract: The study aimed to knowing the grammatical mistakes found in students’ translation texts especially in the thesis abstract made by students of the Business and Economy Faculty of Bengkulu University. It investigated how the grammatical rules were implemented in their thesis abstracts. The study used the analysis of English grammar rules based on grammatical theories. The documents were used as the main data in this study, there were ten thesis abstracts made by the students. The results showed that there were 38 grammatical mistakes found. The most frequent grammatical mistakes made by students were word choice, word order, verb + agreement, and tenses. Then, at the end of the analysis, researchers gave the model of improvement based on the grammatical rules toward the grammatical mistakes that researchers found. This step was very important because the translation was about how we transferred the source language to the target language in equal meaning.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to reveal the effects of Inquiry-Based STEM Learning Strategy toward students’ writing ability at the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 15 Kota Bengkulu. Quasi-experimental design was implemented in this study. Eight grade students of SMP Negeri 15 Kota Bengkulu were participated in this study. The findings revealed a significant difference between the writing abilities of students taught using the Inquiry-Based STEM strategy and the writing abilities of students taught simply using scientific approach which is used as conventional techniques. It was found from the post-test results that there was significant effect toward students' writing ability after receiving six treatments. The results independent sample test revealed that the Inquiry-Based STEM technique had a significant impact toward students' writing abilities. The mean pre-test writing skill score for the control and experiment groups was found to be slightly comparable. However, the writing score of the experiment group was higher than the control group. Thus, it can be concluded that Inquiry-Based STEM strategy gives positive effect toward students’ writing ability and is proved to be effective strategy in teaching writing. Finally, it is suggested that teachers comprehend and apply the Inquiry-Based STEM strategy while teaching writing because it has been demonstrated that this technique may improve the teaching learning process. It is also suggested that additional studies perform study on the use of the Inquiry-Based STEM method in various grades or schools.

Abstract

Purpose – This study examines the effect of the Bamboozle game on students’ reading ability, aiming to enhance engagement and comprehension through innovative and interactive learning methods.Method – A pre-experimental research design was employed, involving one seventh-grade class at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Lubuklinggau in the 2024/2025 academic year. A total of 33 students participated, with purposive sampling selecting 10 students for detailed analysis. Data were collected using pre-tests and post-tests to measure improvements in reading comprehension. Findings – The results indicate a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension, as reflected in the increase in the post-test mean score to 82.7. The calculation of Cohen’s effect size (d = 1.40) confirms a large effect, highlighting the effectiveness of the Bamboozle game in enhancing reading skills. The findings reveal that students showed notable progress in vocabulary acquisition, identifying main ideas, and making inferences from texts. Additionally, the interactive and competitive nature of the game increased students' motivation and engagement, fostering a more dynamic and enjoyable learning environment. The study also found that students exhibited greater confidence in interpreting complex passages and demonstrated improved retention of reading materials compared to traditional methods. Research Implications – The findings highlight the potential of game-based learning in improving reading comprehension and student motivation. Institutions should consider integrating digital tools like Bamboozle into reading instruction and provide teacher training on gamified learning strategies. However, this study's small sample size and short intervention period limit generalizability. Future research should explore long-term effects and application to other language skills.

Abstract

This study investigated how students' speaking performance was affected by creating YouTube video projects using AI-assisted tools like CapCut, Canva, AI voice tools, Kine Master, Grammarly, ELSA Speak, etc. This study was quantitative in design. This pre-experimental study employed a one-group pretest-posttest strategy to ascertain whether the students' speaking performance was impacted by producing a video project. The population was eleven students in the electrical engineering program at SMKN 1 Rejang Lebong. The sample consists of 47 students. Tests, both pre- and post-test, were used to gather the quantitative data. The data were statistically analyzed using a paired sample t-test with IBM SPSS 25 for Windows. The results of this research showed that using AI to help students create a YouTube project significantly improved their speaking skills. It was an effective way to teach speaking because it improves students' speaking performance, fosters teamwork, sharpens their problem-solving abilities, and motivates them to be proactive, communicative, imaginative, and creative. As a result, using it to teach speaking is strongly advised. Keywords: AI-Assisted; Video Project; Speaking Performance
