Abstract

In general, the manufacture of brake pad components is made of 60% asbestos material, although this material is still often used, it turns out that the material is not environmentally friendly and not good for health because it contains carcinogenic substances that if inhaled by human lungs can cause respiratory disturbances. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new innovations, one of which is phenolic resin matrix composites. This study aims to determine the effect of matrix percentage and sintering temperature on the density and hardness of phenolic resin matrix composite materials combined with aluminum, brass, silica sand, and boiler fly ash. The method applied in this study is powder metallurgy, which has stages of mixing, compression, and sintering processes. The process of mixing metal reinforcing powder and fly ash boiler uses a horizontal ball mill machine with a Ball Powder Ratio (BPR) parameter of 10:1 which has a rotation speed of 90 rpm and is waited for 4 hours. Then for cold compaction, it uses 5300 Psi and waits for 10 minutes and the variations used are the percentage of matrices of 44 wt.%, 52 wt.%, and 60 wt.% and the variation in sintering temperature of 80°C, 90°C, and 100°C and in the oven for 10 minutes. The test was carried out using the ASTM B962-17 standard for density test while the hardness test used the ASTM E110-14 approach using a portable hardness test device. Hardness testing with the highest value of 102 HB with a matrix percentage of 60 wt.% with a pressure of 5300 Psi and the highest density value of 1.404 g/cm3 with a compaction pressure of 5300 Psi before the sintering treatment. After sintering treatment, the highest hardness result was 147 HB with a matrix percentage of 60 wt.% with a temperature of 50°C and the highest density value of 1,505 g/cm3 with a temperature of 50°C with a holding time of 10 minutes each.
