Abstract

This article analyses the contestation of slavery activities in Timor during 19th  century. The slave trade cannot be separated from contestation between three forces, namely the local authority (rajah), colonial entities residing in Timor, and pirates from Bugis, Ende, and Sulu.  The rajah fought each other on the battlefield to decide which of them worthy of a “gift” of the war, which were women and children as merchandise for sale. Meanwhile, colonial complaints about the limited human labor to be employed in various types of work not only encouraged increased slave raiding and the purchase of slaves in distant places, but at the same time fostered slave trading activities, both were sponsored by the Dutch and Portuguese. One of the main causes of the ongoing slave trade was piracy at sea, three actors were pioneering slave raiding, namely Balanini/Ilanun, Bugis and Makassar pirate, and Ende pirate. By applying historical method, this research questioned why locals, Europeans, and pirate rulers contested to obtain slaves in Timor? The rise of capitalism was marked by the demand for cheap labor in 19th century. Therefore, slave commodities were mobilized to meet the need for labour in plantations or companies owned by the colonial government.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the development of maritime transportation in the Seribu Islands community concerning crossing locations and types of ships. The development of marine transportation in Seribu Island has impacted the local community since 1996. The research implemented the historical method to describe the impact of the development of the Seribu Island Port on the surrounding community and the community around Kali Adem Dock. Passenger ship crossing activities at Muara Angke Fishing Port are not very conducive because of its location adjacent to fishing activities. Ships used for transportation activities in the Seribu Island are still not seaworthy, obstructing crossing activities. As one of the icons of the capital city, the Seribu Island still needs a specific passenger ferry port. Therefore, the government has officiated Kali Adem Dock as a particular port of passenger for the Seribu Island, which is located west of Muara Angke Fishing Port. The construction of Kali Adem Dock has improved the welfare of the people of the Seribu Island. In its development, the activities in Kali Adem Dock caused several obstacles, such as rob, traffic jams, and decreased income for traders around Kali Adem Dock.

Abstract

This article discusses the importance of learning Indonesian history based on multiculturalism to strengthen national integration. The post-Reformation era, which has opened the gate to broad democracy and regional autonomy on the one hand, has also opened the idea of national disintegration by several parties on the other side. This idea demonstrated by demands for secession in several regions in Indonesia, the idea of trans-national Islam, and horizontal conflicts. If this is not a concern, it will threaten the conception of the Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia (NKRI)/Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia in the future. Through the conception of multiculturalism, this article discusses three main things, namely the concept of multiculturalism in Indonesia, the plurality of Indonesian society as a necessity, and initiating learning Indonesian history through intellectual training and current problem-based learning strategies.

Abstract

This article focuses on the dynamics of Indonesia-Australia relations in the context of the Timor Gap Treaty. Political victory or defeat over territorial disputes is vital in bilateral relations between Indonesia and Australia. Historical methods were used to examine the problem, in which the data is extracted from primary sources, including news and articles in newspapers and magazines. Many factors determine the issue of neighbourly relations between two countries. The research results show that Indonesia’s political interests are a priority in resolving the Timor Gap conflict. Australia’s recognition of Indonesia’s sovereignty over East Timor is the primary consideration for the Indonesian Government in resolving disputes in the Timor Gap. This factor also causes Indonesia to recognize Australia’s maritime claims over areas that close to Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines forest plundering in KPH Randublatung involving individuals from outside the forest communities. The Reformation era marked the beginning of numerous demonstrations in both urban and rural areas across various regions. In forest villages where communities have close geographical proximity to state forests, one form of particularly intense demonstration was forest plundering. As residents of forest villages, or communities living near KPH, they have engaged in the practice of mblandongeven since the colonial period. Acts of taking wood from state forests have occurred for a long time. However, in the lead-up to the Reformation, taking wood from the forest evolved beyond mere theft, escalating into acts of plundering. This study analyzes the factors driving forest plundering, which also involved parties from outside the forest villages. The research findings indicate both internal (village community) and external factors contributing to the plundering. Internal factors include community customs, perceptions, and the necessity for survival amidst an environment that does not guarantee livelihood sustainability. External factors include political instability in the lead-up to the Reformation, which created opportunities for plunderers due to the absence of legal certainty. Additionally, the emergence of financiers driven by the demand for teak wood in the market also fueled organized and structured plundering. These actions were often supported by security forces.
