Abstract

This study aimed to examine the beginning reading abilities of second-grade students, identify the difficulties they experienced, and describe the efforts undertaken to address those difficulties. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed. The study was conducted among second-grade students at SD Negeri 9 Kabangka, located in Oensuli Village, Kabangka District, Muna Regency, during the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2022), involving data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings showed that students' beginning reading abilities varied. While some students were able to read letters, syllables, words, and simple sentences relatively well, others experienced difficulties in recognizing and distinguishing letters, reading syllables fluently, pronouncing simple words accurately, and reading confidently in front of the class. The difficulties were influenced by internal and external factors, including limited interest and motivation to read, low self-confidence, insufficient reading practice at home, and limited parental assistance. Efforts to address these difficulties included individualized guidance, the use of engaging instructional media and methods, repeated reading practice, parental involvement, and continuous motivational support. The study concludes that beginning reading difficulties require systematic and sustained intervention involving teachers, students, and families to strengthen students' foundational literacy skills.

Abstract

Interest in learning is an important factor influencing the success of the learning process in elementary education. Students with a strong interest in learning tend to demonstrate greater attention, enthusiasm, active participation, and willingness to engage with learning materials. Preliminary observations indicated that fifth-grade students' interest in learning Pancasila Education was relatively low, as reflected in limited attention during lessons, low participation in classroom activities, and the limited variation of instructional strategies implemented by the teacher. This study aimed to describe the strategies used by the teacher to enhance fifth-grade students' interest in learning Pancasila Education. A qualitative approach with a descriptive design was employed. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving the school principal, the fifth-grade teacher, and fifth-grade students as informants. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model, which comprises data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings showed that the teacher implemented varied instructional strategies, including lectures, discussions, question-and-answer activities, educational games, the use of pictures and videos, motivational support, communicative interaction, and contextual learning. These strategies contributed to increased student attention, enthusiasm, active participation, and involvement throughout the learning process. The findings indicate that the consistent implementation of varied, interactive, communicative, and contextual instructional strategies plays an important role in enhancing students' interest in learning Pancasila Education at the elementary school level.

Abstract

21st century education requires students to have higher order thinking skills (HOTS) in order to compete in the era of globalization. However, the implementation of HOTS in Elementary Schools (SD) still faces various challenges, especially in the use of appropriate learning methods. This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to socialize the HOTS concept and its application in project-based learning to elementary school teachers. The methods used in this PKM include training, mentoring, and direct practice in compiling and implementing HOTS-based project-based learning. The results of the activity showed an increase in teachers' understanding of HOTS and its implementation in learning. In addition, students were also more active and creative in the learning process. This activity is expected to improve the quality of learning in elementary schools and support the development of 21st century skills for students.

Abstract

Early childhood social skills are an important foundation for children's success in socializing, learning, and building relationships in the future. In underdeveloped areas such as Mata Usu District, Bombana Regency, children experience limitations in developing social skills due to low access to quality education, lack of PAUD teacher training, and minimal parental participation. This community service aims to implement a restorative program as an educational approach to improving early childhood social skills. The implementation method includes identifying problems, training teachers and parents on the restorative approach, implementing role-playing and children's dialogue activities, and evaluating the results. The activity was carried out in one of the underdeveloped villages in Mata Usu District for two months. The results of the service showed a significant increase in children's social skills such as empathy, communication, and peaceful conflict resolution. Teachers and parents also showed increased understanding and involvement in guiding children with a restorative approach. This program shows that an empathy and communication-based approach is effective in areas with limited resources. Policy support and further training are needed so that this approach can be implemented sustainably in all PAUDs in Mata Usu District.

Abstract

Bullying remains a social issue in elementary schools and negatively affects students’ social development and character formation. Preventive efforts are therefore required through educational strategies integrated into classroom learning. This community service program aimed to increase anti-bullying awareness and strengthen students’ social character through social studies (IPS) based learning at SDN 03 Konda. The program employed an educational and participatory approach consisting of preparation, socialization activities, reinforcement through social studies instruction, and evaluation. During the socialization stage, students were introduced to bullying concepts, various forms, and harmful effects on social interaction. These ideas were reinforced by integrating social values such as empathy, respect, cooperation, and responsibility into learning activities. Results indicated improved student understanding of bullying, awareness of respectful behavior, and positive changes in peer interaction. Learning activities connecting social studies content with everyday social experiences promoted meaningful learning and supported internalization of positive social values. In addition, the program strengthened teachers’ roles as facilitators of character education and supported sustainability of anti-bullying values in daily classroom practices. Overall, socialization of anti-bullying awareness through social studies based learning proved effective for creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive elementary school environment.
