Abstract

This study aims to examine Malay–Minangkabau mantras as ritual language practices through the perspectives of forensic linguistics and sociolinguistic–cultural studies. Specifically, the research seeks to identify the linguistic features of mantras at the phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical, and pragmatic levels; to represent the linguistic identity of their speakers; and to explain the social and cultural functions of mantras within local communities. The study positions mantras not merely as magical texts or folklore, but as social–linguistic actions that record values, identity, and the cultural dynamics of the Malay–Minangkabau community. The scope of the research is limited to healing and protective mantras used in particular Malay–Minangkabau communities. The analysis focuses on linguistic structure and socio-cultural context without normatively evaluating medical or theological aspects. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, this study integrates forensic linguistics, Halliday’s theory of social meaning (ideational, interpersonal, and textual), and the language–culture perspectives of Foley and Duranti. The research data consist of mantra texts obtained from the documentation of oral traditions and. The findings indicate that mantras exhibit formulaic and performative linguistic structures that function as mechanisms of psychosocial regulation within the community. A noteworthy finding is that mantras constitute a restricted ritual register with socially limited users and function as a collective linguistic fingerprint that records the identity, history, and cultural transformation of the Malay–Minangkabau community.

Abstract

This research was aimed to reveal and explain the violations conducted by Google to its user privacy which is implied through its Privacy Policy Agreement statement by analyzing it with Theme and Rheme proposed by Halliday. This qualitative research was done by applying the documentation recording method in collecting data and the Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics as the basic theory. The result of the data was presented in the table analysis and in the form of descriptive interpretation. The result showed that Google build its clauses with the 4 types of theme construction. From the analyzed clauses, the dominantly built clause is the single constituent with marked theme where “We” is the mostly occurred subject. Yet, Google applied unmarked theme mosty in their clauses. With this dominant occurences of “We”, Google construe its existence as the authority holders of the w hole agreement. The researchers found that similar finite predicator appeared repeatedly such “collect” and “use” in building its clauses. These constitute Google’s strategy in order to force the user’s permission to let Google freely access their privacy. In addition, the operation of the conjunction “and”, extention, expansion and exemplificatory constituents represent the plentiful request of Google related to its user’s information. Those summarized the violation conducted by Google to its user’s privacy. Keywords: clause, forensic-linguistics, misleading-statement, privacy, violation.

Abstract

This study aims to describe beauty terms and their meanings in the comment section of the @Tasyafarasya TikTok account, categorized into the domains of cosmetics, skincare, and body care. The methods and techniques applied in this study follow Sudaryanto's three-stage research framework: (1) data collection, (2) data analysis, and (3) presentation of data analysis results. The data collection stage was carried out using the observation method (metode simak). This was followed by the basic tapping technique (teknik sadap) and advanced techniques consisting of the Non-Participatory Observation technique (teknik Simak Bebas Libat Cakap/SBLC) and the note-taking technique (teknik catat). Data were analyzed using two methods: the identity method (metode padan) and the distributional method (metode agih). The identity methods applied were referential and translational identity methods, using the basic technique of Determining Element Division (Pilah Unsur Penentu/PUP) and the advanced technique of Equalizing-Differentiating (Hubung Banding Membedakan/HBB). Meanwhile, the distributional method utilized the Immediate Constituent Analysis as the basic technique (Bagi Unsur Langsung/BUL) and the substitution technique (teknik ganti) as the advanced technique. Subsequently, the informal method was used to present the results of the data analysis. Based on the data analysis, the beauty terms found in the cosmetics (make-up) domain include foundation, lip liner, browcara, baking, cracky, cushion, and skin tint. In the skincare domain, the identified beauty terms are micellar water, acne prone, face wash, moist, sleeping mask, sunscreen, tone up, skin barrier, double cleansing, and sheet mask. Meanwhile, the beauty terms found in the body care domain consist of body lotion, sunblock, body scrub, lightening, whitening, brightening, and abu-abu (greyish).
