Abstract

Background and purpose: Picky eating behaviour in toddlers may lead to a lack of nutritional intake and affect their nutritional status. This study aims to determine the correlation of picky eating with the nutritional status of toddlers aged 24-59 months in Denpasar City. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of 100 toddlers and mothers in Denpasar City in 2020. The variables collected were mother's education, occupation, family income, children’s age, gender, history of infectious diseases, eating behaviour, and nutritional status. The data were collected by interview using questionnaire for socio-demographic characteristics and the Children Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ). Bodyweight and height were measured using Camry and Microtoise digital scales. The data were analyzed including descriptive analysis and chi-square test, Results: We found almost two third (63%) of the toddlers had picky eating behaviour. Most toddlers had normal nutritional status (87%), while 9% of them were stunted. Most toddlers had a poor appetite (85%) and left food on their plates after eating (54%). The majority do not want to taste food that was never introduced (66%) and refuse the main meal after eating snacks (68%). We found no significant association between eating behaviours and nutritional status of the toddlers. Conclusion: There was no correlation between picky eating behaviour and the nutritional status of toddlers. Picky eaters do not refuse food consistently, hence it can balance the nutritional needs. Therefore, providing information and practice regarding nutritious food is still important, as well as regular monitoring of children’s nutritional status.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Children face risk of tuberculosis (TB) infection within households where an index case is present. TB prevention therapy (TPT) for children is a recommended measures to provide protection against TB. This study aims to investigate the relationship between maternal perceptions and the information exposure received by mothers with the acceptance of TPT for toddlers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Badung District, Bali Province, using the register of tuberculosis patients from 2018-2019 as the sampling frame. A systematic random selection yielded 138 mothers with eligible criteria out of 226 children. Home interviews was conducted with mothers regarding maternal characteristics, knowledge, toddlers’ characteristics, perceptions, information exposure, and acceptance of TPT for their children. The relationship between acceptance of TPT and perceptions, information, and other variables was tested using Chi-square test, followed by multivariable analysis using forward logistic regression. Results: The majority of mothers were aged 30-39 years (57.8%), had completed high school (43.5%), unemployed (43.5%), resided in the Kuta sub-district (23.9%), and had ≤2 living children (73.2%). About 19.2% of mothers accepted TPT for their children. The acceptance of TPT for children was significantly associated with information sources from health worker (aOR=26.70; 95%CI: 1.25-569.38), the presence of ≥2 family members with TB (aOR=14.29; 95%CI: 1.22-166.68), duration of child care by the index case ≥8 hours/day (aOR=10.04; 95%CI: 2.05-49.26), receiving complete information (aOR=9.01; 95%CI: 1.64-49.64), and perceiving minimal barriers (aOR=4.08: 95%CI: 1.22-13.62). Conclusion: Adequate information exposure, longer duration of care by TB patients, and low perceived barriers contribute to the acceptance of TPT for children. Education to parent is essential to improve acceptance to TPT.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Adolescent psychopathological conditions influence body image perception which can lead to eating disorders, resulting in nutritional and health problems The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between body image perception, eating disorders, and the nutritional status of adolescent girls. Methods: This is a quantitative observational study using a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted at SMP Negeri 8 Denpasar and SMP Raj Yamuna in 2022 involving 90 students. Data collected included characteristics, body image perception, eating disorders, weight, and height. Data collection instruments included questionnaire, Multidimensional Body Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS) for body image perception, anthropometric measurement tools and the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (EDDS). The data was analysed including descriptive analysis and Chi-square test. Results: The respondents were aged between 12–15 years, with the highest proportion was age 13 years at 42.2%. The majority of adolescent girls (44.8%) were in grade VIII. More than half (54.4%) tend to have a positive body image perception, whilst the majority experienced eating disorders at 86.7%, and had normal nutritional status at 75.6%. Body image perception associated with nutritional status of adolescent girls (OR=4.587; 95%CI: 1.589-13.237; p=0.003). Conclusion: Body image perception is related to the nutritional status of adolescent girls in Denpasar. Therefore, peer counselors are needed to improve adolescent communication, including promoting nutritional action messages through appealing social media approaches. Then, interventions at school are also needed including to define the role of peer supports.

Abstract

Stunting is one of the triple malnutrition burdens in Indonesia, beside obesity and micronutrient deficiency. Stunting is a reflection of long-term undernourishment which resulted in stunted growth. National Health Survey Data showed the reduction of stunting rate among under-five children in Indonesia from 37.2% in 2013 to 30.4% in 2018 and 21.5% in 2023. Despite this decreasing trend, the national stunting rate was still above the World Health Organization threshold of 20%. There is also a wide discrepancy between provinces in Indonesia with stunting rate ranges from 7.2% in Bali to 39.2% in Papua. Back in 2011, there was a movement by 28 countries including Indonesia regarding the 1000 first day of life (1000-days) program. This was an approach targeting children during their 1000 first day of life through specific and sensitive nutritional interventions. The 1000-days is started during pregnancy until the child is two years old. This movement involved related stakeholders from national and sub-national level including ministries, community organization, private sectors, professional organization, academics and others.

Abstract

Three burdens of malnutrition, namely undernutrition, overnutrition, and lack of macronutrients are problems faced by adolescents in Indonesia. Nutritional problems related to development and growth are often experienced by adolescents because the adolescent's body requires more energy and nutrients than children. Previous studies on nutritional intake and nutritional status in adolescents reported inconsistent results. This study aims to determine the relationship between nutritional intake and nutritional status in adolescent girls in Buleleng Bali. This study uses a cross-sectional analytic observational design conducted in two high schools in Buleleng Regency with 163 respondents. The instruments used in this study were a questionnaire, 2x24 hour food recall, weight measurement with a weight scale, height measurement with a mechanical meter, and the World Health Organization (WHO) AnthroPlus software to calculate the body mass index by age (z-score). Spearman correlation test was performed for bivariate analysis and multiple linear regression for multivariate analysis. Bivariate analysis showed that the variables of fat intake (p-value=<0,001) and total energy intake (p-value=0,008) showed a significant correlation with the z-score. In multivariate analysis, the variable that showed a significant relationship with the z-score was fat intake (β=0,023, 95%CI=0,013-0,033, p-value=<0,001). Nutritional intake that has a significant relationship with nutritional status in adolescent girls in Buleleng Regency is fat intake. Limitation of fat consumption needs to be done.
