Abstract

Background and purpose: Children face risk of tuberculosis (TB) infection within households where an index case is present. TB prevention therapy (TPT) for children is a recommended measures to provide protection against TB. This study aims to investigate the relationship between maternal perceptions and the information exposure received by mothers with the acceptance of TPT for toddlers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Badung District, Bali Province, using the register of tuberculosis patients from 2018-2019 as the sampling frame. A systematic random selection yielded 138 mothers with eligible criteria out of 226 children. Home interviews was conducted with mothers regarding maternal characteristics, knowledge, toddlers’ characteristics, perceptions, information exposure, and acceptance of TPT for their children. The relationship between acceptance of TPT and perceptions, information, and other variables was tested using Chi-square test, followed by multivariable analysis using forward logistic regression. Results: The majority of mothers were aged 30-39 years (57.8%), had completed high school (43.5%), unemployed (43.5%), resided in the Kuta sub-district (23.9%), and had ≤2 living children (73.2%). About 19.2% of mothers accepted TPT for their children. The acceptance of TPT for children was significantly associated with information sources from health worker (aOR=26.70; 95%CI: 1.25-569.38), the presence of ≥2 family members with TB (aOR=14.29; 95%CI: 1.22-166.68), duration of child care by the index case ≥8 hours/day (aOR=10.04; 95%CI: 2.05-49.26), receiving complete information (aOR=9.01; 95%CI: 1.64-49.64), and perceiving minimal barriers (aOR=4.08: 95%CI: 1.22-13.62). Conclusion: Adequate information exposure, longer duration of care by TB patients, and low perceived barriers contribute to the acceptance of TPT for children. Education to parent is essential to improve acceptance to TPT.

Abstract

Stunting is one of the triple malnutrition burdens in Indonesia, beside obesity and micronutrient deficiency. Stunting is a reflection of long-term undernourishment which resulted in stunted growth. National Health Survey Data showed the reduction of stunting rate among under-five children in Indonesia from 37.2% in 2013 to 30.4% in 2018 and 21.5% in 2023. Despite this decreasing trend, the national stunting rate was still above the World Health Organization threshold of 20%. There is also a wide discrepancy between provinces in Indonesia with stunting rate ranges from 7.2% in Bali to 39.2% in Papua. Back in 2011, there was a movement by 28 countries including Indonesia regarding the 1000 first day of life (1000-days) program. This was an approach targeting children during their 1000 first day of life through specific and sensitive nutritional interventions. The 1000-days is started during pregnancy until the child is two years old. This movement involved related stakeholders from national and sub-national level including ministries, community organization, private sectors, professional organization, academics and others.

Abstract

Three burdens of malnutrition, namely undernutrition, overnutrition, and lack of macronutrients are problems faced by adolescents in Indonesia. Nutritional problems related to development and growth are often experienced by adolescents because the adolescent's body requires more energy and nutrients than children. Previous studies on nutritional intake and nutritional status in adolescents reported inconsistent results. This study aims to determine the relationship between nutritional intake and nutritional status in adolescent girls in Buleleng Bali. This study uses a cross-sectional analytic observational design conducted in two high schools in Buleleng Regency with 163 respondents. The instruments used in this study were a questionnaire, 2x24 hour food recall, weight measurement with a weight scale, height measurement with a mechanical meter, and the World Health Organization (WHO) AnthroPlus software to calculate the body mass index by age (z-score). Spearman correlation test was performed for bivariate analysis and multiple linear regression for multivariate analysis. Bivariate analysis showed that the variables of fat intake (p-value=<0,001) and total energy intake (p-value=0,008) showed a significant correlation with the z-score. In multivariate analysis, the variable that showed a significant relationship with the z-score was fat intake (β=0,023, 95%CI=0,013-0,033, p-value=<0,001). Nutritional intake that has a significant relationship with nutritional status in adolescent girls in Buleleng Regency is fat intake. Limitation of fat consumption needs to be done.

Abstract

Bali has the potential for good health resources. That is why Bali has been identified as the province with the lowest prevalence of stunting. However, this success should not make stakeholders think this problem is resolved. Bali still has problems which, if not addressed, will trigger a further increase in the prevalence of stunting. Considering this, it is deemed necessary to explore the perspectives of nutrition fieldworkers  and other stakeholders regarding the problem of stunting in Bali. This research aims to explore the potential and constraints to accelerating stunting reduction in Bali. This is qualitative research conducted between June and July 2022. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. This study found that access to affordable health services is the main potential to support the acceleration of stunting reduction. Apart from that, there is a Balinese Traditional Village Council which always synergizes with government programs for the welfare of the community. The low quality of cadres is an obstacle to the success of the program. Many parents hesitate to take their children to posyandu because they are not satisfied with the cadre's services. Apart from that, there are other inhibiting factors, such as society's wrong understanding of stunting, teenage marriage, lack of environmental hygiene and sanitation, and inappropriate parenting patterns. This condition needs attention so that the acceleration of stunting reduction in Bali can be achieved as optimally as possible.

Abstract

Abstract

The popularity of plant-based milk alternatives (PBMA) has been growing due to environmental concerns and health benefits. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a novel PBMA formulation combining pigeon pea and soybean at three different ratios (40:60, 50:50, and 60:40), focusing on their physicochemical characteristics, sensory properties, and antioxidant activity. In this study, significant differences (p<0.05) were found in the physicochemical properties of the samples, while sensory acceptability showed no significant differences (p>0.05). Increasing the proportion of pigeon pea resulted in a lower level of ash, protein, fat, color, viscosity, and pH, while the content of moisture, carbohydrate, and soluble solids increased. The formulations contained 91.84‒92.39% moisture; 0.09‒0.12% ash; 0.80‒1.48% protein; 0.81‒1.04% crude fat; and 5.52‒5.91% carbohydrate. Additionally, they had lightness values of 59.74‒68.57; greenness/redness values of -0.53‒0.68; yellowness values of 6.60‒8.13; viscosities of 11.42‒12.50 cP; soluble solids of 6.00‒9.00 °Brix; and pH of 6.69‒6.72. The sensory evaluation ranged from “neither like nor dislike” to “slightly like” (5.24–5.97 on a 9-point scale), indicating moderate acceptability across all formulations. Despite being acknowledged as having a beany aroma, the panelists identified sweet and creamy notes with low bitterness in the sample, contributing to a relatively pleasant flavor. Furthermore, the 50:50 pigeon pea-to-soybean formulation contained daidzein as the predominant isoflavone and demonstrated high antioxidant activity (91.90% DPPH inhibition). These findings suggest that the developed PBMA is a promising functional beverage with good nutritional and sensory qualities.
