Abstract

Customary marriage functions as a social institution under numerous legal systems; yet, its implementation often poses significant obstacles to the safeguarding of children's rights, especially when performed without official registration or involving minors. This paper investigates the normative boundaries of customary marriage within the context of Islamic family law, emphasizing child protection via a comparative examination of Indonesia and South Africa. This study uses normative legal research methods—integrating legislative, conceptual, and comparative approaches—to analyse customary marital patterns, child protection norms, and judicial reactions in both countries. The findings indicate that Islamic family law acknowledges custom (‘urf) only under the condition that it aligns with the objectives of Sharīʿah (maqāṣid al-sharīʿah), specifically the safeguarding of progeny (ḥifẓ al-nasl), the mitigation of harm (dar’ al-mafāsid), and the attainment of justice (‘adl). The prevalence of unregistered traditional marriages and lenient marriage dispensation norms in Indonesia compromises children's legal identification, parental responsibility, and access to civil rights. Conversely, South Africa enforces more stringent normative regulations via compulsory registration and judicial measures to amend customary behaviors detrimental to children. This paper normatively asserts that child safety is an essential requirement for the legality of customary marriage and illustrates how Islamic family law serves as an internal corrective mechanism within diverse legal systems.

Abstract

This study examines effects of political information sources (digital media, electronic mass media, political actors’ postings, and interpersonal networks) on political knowledge, awareness, and participation among West Java university students during the 2024 Indonesian election, using PLS-SEM with 597 respondents. Findings reveal that political actors’ postings affect political knowledge, while digital media uniquely predicted both knowledge and awareness. Political knowledge subsequently strengthened awareness and both online and offline participation, with online participation significantly driving offline engagement. Traditional media and interpersonal networks showed no significant effects. Results highlight the importance of contextualizing digital media’s political influence within Indonesia’s contested democratic environment

Abstract

The intensification of political actors communication on social media has reshaped patterns of public political engagement, yet the mechanisms linking these interactions remain contested. This study examines the influence of political actors’ communication on political interest and political participation among residents of Bogor, while also evaluating whether political interest mediates this relationship. Using linear regression and a mediation analysis with PROCESS Model 4, the results show that political actors’ communication significantly increases political interest (B = 0.559; p < 0.05) and political participation (B = 0.316; p < 0.05). However, political interest does not significantly affect participation (B = 0.033; p > 0.05) and does not serve as a mediator, as indicated by a non-significant indirect effect (LLCI = –0.0064; ULCI = 0.0439). These findings reveal a direct-only effect, suggesting that political participation is driven more by impression-based and emotionally framed digital communication than by cognitive processes rooted in political interest. Beyond its statistical conclusions, this study underscores how social media environments can prompt individuals to engage in political behaviors even in the absence of strong intrinsic interest, highlighting the performative, immediate, and affective nature of political communication in digital spaces. Overall, the study enriches the understanding of contemporary political engagement by demonstrating that affective cues and online visibility play a more dominant role than traditional interest-based motivations, aligning with the principles of Communication Mediation Theory and Impression Management in the context of modern political communication.

Abstract

The relationship between executive and legislative institutions is a key pillar of subnational governance in Indonesia, especially during the era of regional autonomy. This article examines how informal political mechanisms shaped political communication between the Mayor of Bogor and the Bogor City Council (DPRD) during the 2014–2019 period. The study employs a qualitative single-case design based on in-depth interviews with key political actors—including the mayor, council speaker, faction leaders, local media executives, and local political observers—complemented by document and media analysis. Data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña's interactive model of data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that informal communication channels, such as interpersonal lobbying, private meetings, and social–religious gatherings, play a more decisive role than formal procedures in building trust, negotiating policy trade-offs, and preventing open conflict between the executive and legislature. Informal politics functions as a complementary and accommodating informal institution that fills the gaps in formal rules and enhances political resilience by providing an early warning and conflict prevention mechanism. Simultaneously, formal procedures remain essential as a framework for legitimacy and accountability. The article conceptualises these dynamics as a form of trust-based political communication within a hybrid political communication system at the local level and discusses their implications for democratic accountability and executive–legislative collaboration in Indonesia's semi-presidential context.

Abstract

Indonesia's 2024 elections exposed a paradox at the heart of its digital democracy: youth who are the most connected generation in the nation's history are simultaneously its most disengaged voters. This study examines the relationship between social media use and political participation among Indonesian university students, drawing on an integrated theoretical framework combining political communication theory, the Civic Voluntarism Model (CVM), and networked publics theory. A cross-sectional survey was administered to 551 university students across public and private institutions in West Java, Indonesia. Instruments were validated through confirmatory factor analysis and demonstrated adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's α = .81–.87 across subscales). Results reveal a 13.1 percentage-point decline in voting intention (from 45.6% to 32.5%), alongside critically low online (M = 0.75/5.0) and offline (M = 0.80/5.0) political participation. Despite near-universal platform adoption (WhatsApp: 96.9%; Instagram: 95.5%), political knowledge averaged 2.49/4.0 and failed to translate into action. Spearman correlation and chi-square analyses indicate that political knowledge, trust, and barrier perceptions are significantly associated with participation outcomes. Psychological barriers—political disinterest, news distrust, and fear of political expression—emerged as the dominant suppressors of engagement, rather than logistical constraints. These findings challenge technological determinism and carry implications for communication practitioners, educators, and policymakers seeking to revitalize youth democratic participation.

Abstract

Indonesia's Free Nutritious Meal Program (Makan Bergizi Gratis, MBG) has generated intense public discourse, yet it remains unclear whether public participation rests more on the perceived transparency of official information or on the volume of programme-related content citizens encounter on social media. This study compares the two pathways within a single explanatory model. A cross-sectional survey of 243 residents of Bogor City measured perceived government information transparency, social media content exposure, and a composite participation index covering programme acceptance, participation intention, and digital participation. The data were analysed using Pearson correlation, standard multiple regression, and a Hotelling-Williams test for the difference between two dependent, overlapping correlations. Both transparency and exposure independently predicted participation, but transparency held a significantly stronger association with participation than exposure did, and this ordering was preserved when extreme scores were trimmed. Beneficiary status, whether direct or through a family member, did not differentiate participation. The findings indicate that the clarity, accuracy, and accessibility of official information matter more than the sheer volume of online content in shaping public participation, offering practical guidance for allocating public communication resources around flagship social programmes.

Abstract

Herbal medicine use in Indonesia is usually explained as clinically driven health behavior. This study instead treats it as a communicative accomplishment shaped by social networks, narrative persuasion, and digital media. It asks how efficacy and safety are socially constructed and how reference groups shape them. Sixty-two herbal medicine users in Bogor Regency, Bogor City, and East Jakarta participated starting from March 2025 to February 2026 through semi-structured in-depth interviews, one focus group discussion, and a key informant interview with a practising herbalist. Values coding identified dominant motives, and narrative analysis interpreted their justification. Efficacy and safety or naturalness dominated, followed by access, dissatisfaction with biomedical treatment, cost, and ease of preparation. Parents, relatives, and social media initiated use more often than doctors. Efficacy came from experiential testimony rather than biomedical evidence, while safety was inferred from a natural-equals-safe heuristic, with adverse reactions reinterpreted as detoxification. Credibility followed relational proximity before institutional position. Health interventions should enter the reference networks and narrative forms through which herbal remedies circulate. Findings suggest that trust and safety are assembled through source relationships, so digital literacy and harm reduction should work within channels. Keywords: Herbal medicine, health communication, narrative persuasion, parasocial interaction, digital health influencers.
