Abstract

The high cost and limited durability of platinum-based catalysts remain major challenges for the large-scale commercialization of fuel cell. Therefore, alternative and more affordable catalyst support materials are needed. Biomass derived activated carbon offers a promising solution due to its porous structure, good electrical conductivity, and abundant raw material availability. This study aims to investigate the potential of Pinus merkusii pine cones as a precursor for activated carbon through pyrolysis and chemical activation using potassium hydroxide (KOH), as well as to evaluate its suitability as a fuel cell catalyst support material. Pyrolysis was conducted at temperatures of 400ºC, 600ºC, and 800ºC under a nitrogen inert atmosphere, followed by chemical activation. The resulting activated carbon was characterized using proximate analysis and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The results indicate that increasing the pyrolysis temperature led to a reduction in biochar yield, moisture content, ash content, and volatile matter, while consistently enhancing the fixed carbon content and specific surface area. The optimal condition was achieved at a pyrolysis temperature of 800ºC, producing activated carbon with the highest fixed carbon content of 81.87%, a specific surface area of 42.83 m2/g, and a mesoporous structure with an average pore diameter of 3.23 nm. Nevertheless, the obtained specific surface area remains below the ideal value (>100 m²/g) for application as a fuel cell catalyst support, indicating that the synthesized material still requires further optimization in both the process and activation conditions.

Abstract

The accumulation of waste has become a serious issue in Indonesia due to limited landfill space and the lack of an effective waste management system. One alternative solution is the use of an incinerator as an environmentally friendly waste-burning device. This study aims to design and construct the combustion chamber of an incinerator and to test its effectiveness on three types of organic waste variations: dry, wet, and mixed. The method used is a design and build approach, which includes designing with AutoCAD and SketchUp, constructing the physical structure, and conducting combustion tests. The results show that the chamber can accommodate 2–3 kg of waste per batch and can reach a maximum temperature of up to 110°C. The fastest burning time was achieved with dry waste at 16 minutes and 21 seconds, with a combustion rate of 1.95 grams/second. This incinerator, with its simple design and low cost, is effective in reducing waste volume and produces ash that can be used as fertilizer. It is hoped that this incinerator can be widely adopted by communities to help address the waste problem.

Abstract

Waste is a major issue in Indonesia, with production exceeding 67 million tons annually. One effective method for waste treatment is combustion using an incinerator. This study aims to design and build a grate as an additional component to improve the efficiency of the combustion process in an incinerator. The designed grate consists of three main parts: a manual actuator, a drying staircase, and a combustion chamber. The design was created using AutoCAD and SketchUp software, and experiments were conducted using three types of waste: dry, wet, and mixed. The test results show that the addition of the grate accelerates the combustion process and enhances user safety. The highest combustion rate was achieved with dry waste at 2.95 grams/second, followed by wet waste (2.50 grams/second), and mixed waste (2.10 grams/second). The grate also helps reduce moisture content before the waste enters the combustion chamber, contributing to smoke reduction and improved combustion efficiency. This design is expected to offer a practical and efficient solution for small to medium-scale waste management.

Abstract

Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, or maggots, are a type of insect currently widely cultivated, primarily for animal feed. This is because BSF larvae contain essential nutrients such as fat and protein in high amounts, thus improving the nutritional quality of livestock that consume them. Therefore, the processing and preservation of maggots is crucial to maintain their nutritional content and extend their shelf life. One method used in maggot processing is drying. Drying aims to reduce the water content in the larvae, thereby preventing the growth of microorganisms that cause spoilage. One widely applied technique is drying using a microwave oven. However, before the actual process is carried out, simulations are often required to determine the distribution of heat and humidity. Simulation is one of the most effective ways to predict the drying performance of biological materials. This study used a simulation using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method operated by Comsol Multiphysics 6.2 software. The parameters used in the simulation were an initial maggot temperature of 80°C, a drying time of 15 minutes, and a heat source of 1300 W/m³. Based on the simulation results, the final water content of the maggots was below 10%. Furthermore, the final relative humidity of the maggots ranged from 10–35%, while the final temperature of the larvae increased to 93–97°C. These results indicate that microwave drying can effectively reduce moisture content while maintaining the nutritional quality of BSF larvae. These simulation results can be used as a basis for practical maggot drying processes, thus supporting the production of efficient and nutritious animal feed.
