Abstract

This article analyzes the COVID-19 topic discussed at the 2020 USA final presidential debate. The purpose of this research is to describe the effect of the discourses on the socio-cultural practices. The approach employed in this research is the three-dimensional critical discourse analysis by Norman Fairclough consisting of text analysis, discursive practice analysis, and socio-cultural practice analysis of the discourses. The discourses of the COVID-19 topic are seen as important by the American citizens because they need clarity of how their future president would fight the pandemic in their term. The result of this research shows that the two discourses by the presidential candidates produced distinctive depictions of COVID-19. Discourse produced by Donald Trump offered a more optimistic view regarding the COVID-19 situation in the United States, while Joe Biden’s discourse gave a more pessimistic view towards the COVID-19 situation. The presidential candidates provided different views of the COVID-19 situation in the United States in order to appeal and convince the American citizens into voting them. The different depictions of COVID-19 situation in the United States resulted in the American citizens expressing their disappointment over Donald Trump’s optimism which also extend to the criticism towards the White House, while praised Joe Biden’s pessimism on the topic. Ultimately, the discourses are seen as unsatisfactory by the American citizens due to their inability to give details and elaborations on the plan to fight against COVID-19 in the next four years. Lastly, these discourses might create and instil indecisiveness in the American citizens’ voting decision.

Abstract

The Dyak Chief Poem describes the poet's experience of witnessing the intersection of personal desires, cultural expectations, and the larger moral consequences of one's actions. This poem also presents a description of the nature of the island of Borneo at that time, which was still full of tropical rainforest. In addition to the themes of love, honor, and culture, this poem incorporates an ecological theme as its primary setting. Therefore, this poem is suitable for analysis using ecological discourse analysis to see whether this poem is eco-beneficial, eco-destructive, or eco-ambivalent. This research aims to determine the ecological ideology contained in this poem through metaphor, evaluation, and salience, using an ecological discourse analysis approach, which is a qualitative research method. The research results reveal that the depiction of nature as human illustrates the power of nature towards humans. In addition, upon examining the appraisal patterns, it becomes clear that only a few, such as appreciation and graduation, are directly related to nature. On the other hand, affect and judgment, on the other hand, pertain to the protagonist's own feelings and are not associated with either nature or the environment. The use of concreteness, transitivity patterns, and hyponyms reveal the salience of the poem. The researchers conclude, based on metaphor, appraisal, and salience patterns, that this poem is an eco-beneficial discourse that depicts nature as an integral part of human life, with which humans should coexist harmoniously.

Abstract

Abstract: Sungai Bawang Cultural Village organizes weekly Dayak Kenyah Tribe traditional dance performances. Many people, especially in East Kalimantan, only know the Pampang Cultural Village. Therefore, social media videos based on folklore must be optimized for promotional purposes. By altering and uploading videos to social media, the community, particularly members of the Pokdarwis of Sungai Bawang Cultural Village, have the capacity to promote their cultural performances independently. Thus, many people are able to learn about the Sungai Bawang Tourism Village performances. Experiments, lectures, discussions, and demonstrations are the methods applied. The method is carried out in three stages: (1) Downloading the Filmora application, (2) Providing an introduction to the section allocated for the Filmora application, and (3) Creating videos using Filmora. Sungai Bawang Cultural Village community members and Pokdarwis grew an interest in the project and successfully completed the video editing procedure through the use of the Filmora Application. This process also increases public consciousness regarding the significance of social media in promoting the performance video of Sungai Bawang Cultural Village to a broad audience. Abstract

Environmental crises are increasingly mediated through global media platforms, shaping public perception and ecological awareness. National Geographic, as a prominent environmental outlet, plays a key role in constructing narratives around ecological issues. However, the linguistic strategies it employs—particularly evaluative language—remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate the evaluation of LA Wildfire in National Geographic Magazine through an ecolinguistic framework. The study is designed as qualitative research with a content analysis approach, which analyzed four articles discussing LA Wildfire 2025 in the National Geographic Magazine in the Environmental Section. The analysis focuses on appraisal patterns which cover three aspects: attitude, engagement, and graduation where each aspects has their sub categories which makes this analysis detailed.  The findings reveal a dominant use of appreciation and judgment to evoke urgency and moral responsibility, while affect is comparatively minimized. Salience patterns foreground scientific authority and global impact, often marginalizing local ecological voices. Metaphors such as “tipping point” and “planetary fever” reinforce crisis framing but risk oversimplifying complex ecological dynamics. This study contributes to ecolinguistics by demonstrating how evaluative language in environmental media can both amplify ecological concern and obscure systemic causes, highlighting the need for more reflexive and inclusive environmental storytelling.
