Abstract

This study principally aims to find out whether there is or no effect of Word Formation Strategy on grade eight students’ vocabulary learning. The research samples were taken using purposive sampling, with the total number of samples being 113 students. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Sirenja. The research methodology adopted was a quasi-experimental research design. To collect the data, the students were given a pre-test and post-test, numbering 30 items. The research data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U Test (SPSS 24). The result showed that the test statistic was 0.001, which is less than 0.05, which indicates that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. The findings suggest a significant difference in learning outcomes between the experimental and control groups. This means that the Word Formation Strategy has a significant effect on students’ vocabulary learning.

Abstract

Vocabulary forms the essential basis for students’ language proficiency, supporting their growth in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. A well-developed vocabulary not only improves comprehension but also enables effective communication in both oral and written contexts. This research aims to evaluate the impact of Index Card Match method on the vocabulary development of eighth-grade students of Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) Negeri 9 Palu, highlighting the importance of vocabulary in English learning and the need for interactive and effective teaching methods to develop students’ vocabulary skills. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving an experimental group taught using Index Card Match and a control group receiving conventional method. A sample of 64 students was selected through cluster random sampling from total population of 352 eighth-grade students, ensuring representativeness. This research utilized a set of 10 multiple choice questions and 10 matching items as instruments, which has been validated through evaluation and testing to ensure reliability. The findings indicated that the mean pre-test score for the experimental group was 47.81, compared to 49.22 for the control group. In contrast, the post-test mean score for the experimental group rose to 69.69, while the control group scored 42.03. The Mann-Whitney U test was employed due to the non-normal distribution of the data, revealing a significant difference between the two groups (p<0.05). In short, this indicates that the Index Card Match method positively impacts vocabulary development, accentuating its academic and pedagogical significance in improving students’ language skills.

The pre-test was given to the experimental and control groups before treatment while the post-test was given to both groups after the treatment. The mean score of the experimental group on the pre-test was 41.52 and the control group was 53.55. Then, the mean score of the post-test for the experimental group was 83.04 and the control group was 89.80. The data were analyzed statistically using the t-test formula with degrees of freedom (df) = Nx + Ny - 2 = 26 + 23 - 2 = 47. The findings show that the t counted value is 2.342 while the t-table value is 2.011. This means that the t counted is higher than the t-table. Therefore, the research hypothesis is accepted. This finding answered the question from the problem formulation that the use of summarizing strategy can improve the reading comprehension of the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 5 palu.
