Abstract

Most students view the movie as entertainment so they cannot enhance their English learning. In fact, the movie can be one of the effective visual literacy media to learn English. Thus, this research is aimed to investigate students' perception of the visual of the movie as visual-literacy media to support English language learning. The respondents were chosen through the purposive sampling technique. These respondents who have an interest in movies and have their basis in English language skill were chosen by the researcher. This research then was carried out at Universitas Islam Indonesia Yogyakarta. This research is conducted in a qualitative method in an informal setting. The result of this research is that the visual movie mostly in the process may boost student's affection rather than their cognitive so it does not quite support the actual language learning process. Moreover, this research is concluded that the use of movie may prefer entertainment daily. In terms of education, it may be different as the educator should highlight some instructions or topics first before the movie that is used for learning media is played. Furthermore, it is subjective to see student's perceptions even public toward the movie itself, whether it is only for entertainment or it could be appropriate for education as one of the visual literacy media.

Abstract

The vocabulary choice and language used in expressing sadness vary in different cultures, even in the smallest scale of cultural group, i.e., family. There have not been many studies done to explore Indonesian EFL students word choices and expressions related to expressing sadness and empathy. The purpose of this study was to explore how the 11 EFL second-year university students in Basic Reading and Writing class expressed sadness as written in their personal reflective writings. The data was analyzed using mixed methods to obtain valid and reliable results. These second-year university students were assigned to read a picture book, Sad Book, or to watch and listen to the video version as a part of an activity in class. Their reflective writings were analyzed using content analysis to identify the corpus used by the students and using the appraisal framework to capture the variety of their attitudinal linguistic occurrence in expressing sadness and empathy. The findings illustrate that the highest attitudinal marker in expressing sadness is affect, followed by judgment and appreciation. The use of the picture book, Sad Book, assists the EFL students to be more engaged in their reflective writing and thus the highest marker of affect exists due to their ability to project their aesthetic stance. Implications for English language learning for adult learners are addressed at the end of this article.

The sample was established using a multistage sampling technique from the study population of 15-year-old students in Indonesia. The results indicated that the construct validity of the test was verified and the reliability coefficient was 0.805, which was defined good. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the set of tests is appropriate to be used to measure Indonesian students’ reading literacy achievement. In other words, using the set of tests will establish measurement that can reflect the reading literacy achievement of Indonesian students.

Abstract

The present content analysis study intended to investigate the cultural contents of an international EYL textbook used in Indonesian private elementary schools. It examined the representation of cultural themes categorized under the big "C" and small "c" cultures and the representation of EFL context-based/Indonesian cultures in each theme. The findings of the study revealed that (1) the book covered all themes, but their representation is not balanced; (2) some aspects of local cultures were represented in the books, but the number was very limited and less varied. The implication of this study suggests that the international EYL textbook should allocate adequate space for local culture. Hence, this could be seen as an opportunity for EYL teachers and practitioners to use their authority and to empower themselves by providing supplementary materials that best suit their local needs. Keywords: culture, themes, local, representation, international, EYL textbook

Abstract

The murder of women motivated by hatred of their gender, known as femicide, is a crucial issue that frequently occurs in society. The mass media play an important role in shaping the public’s perceptions regarding femicide and the institutions that deal with it through the way they report the news related to both matters. This research aims to analyze the news discourse on femicide and the media's efforts to frame the image of institutions that deal with femicide cases in the online media Kompas.com and Kompas.id. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method and a corpus-based discourse analysis. Data were obtained from 36 news articles related to femicide in Kompas.com and Kompas.id. The femicide news corpus data will be entered into the Antconc software to analyze the word lists, concordance, n-grams, and colocations. The data collection process includes selecting articles, documenting news articles by copying the texts into the Notepad application, saving news texts in *txt. format, and inputting corpus data into the Antconc application. The data analysis process of this research starts from data reduction, data presentation, data triangulation, to drawing conclusions. The results showed that Kompas online media tend to use word choices that are directed at educating about femicide. Kompas online media tends to discuss femicide to raise awareness about femicide among the public. In describing the image of the National Commission on Violence Against Women, the online media Kompas uses positive word choices.
