Abstract

Background:  In pregnant women, gingivitis can result from hormonal fluctuations, local oral conditions, and behavioural factors. Bacteria and inflammatory mediators may enter the circulation and reach the uterus, which can increase the risk of low birth weight and preterm delivery. The decoction of green betel leaves exhibits antibacterial properties that may help prevent gingivitis. Purpose: This study addresses the high prevalence of gingivitis among pregnant women at Unit Pelayanan Terpadu (UPT) Pusat Kesehatan Masyarakat (Puskesmas) / Health Centre Kamal. It aims to evaluate the effects of gargling a 10% green betel leaf decoction on gingivitis in pregnant women at UPT Puskesmas Kamal, Bangkalan District. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design, involving 83 pregnant women as respondents. The gingival index, as proposed by Loe and Silness, was measured both before and after gargling to assess the impact of the intervention. Additionally, an observation sheet was utilised to evaluate participants’ adherence to the gargling regimen at home. Data were analysed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: The results indicated an improvement in the average initial gingival index from 2.1013, classified as severe, to 1.2787, classified as moderate. The Wilcoxon test yielded a significance value of p<0.05, demonstrating a statistically significant effect of gargling a 10% green betel leaf (Piper betle L.) decoction on gingivitis in pregnant women at UPT Puskesmas Kamal, Bangkalan District. Conclusion:  Betel leaf (Piper betle L.) can reduce the prevalence of gingivitis in pregnant women.

Abstract

Oral health is an important aspect of comprehensive health and plays a significant role in children's growth. If disturbed, this condition can affect children's overall development and physical health, as well as reduce their quality of life. Dental caries in early childhood is a major concern because it reflects the effectiveness of dental health maintenance efforts. The problem in this study is the high percentage of dental caries in group B students at Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan Kindergarten, which is likely caused by a lack of knowledge about dental caries, frequent consumption of cariogenic foods, minimal motivation, and irregular access to health services, especially dental health services, at Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan Kindergarten. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using the Dental Coloring Book media on changes in knowledge about dental caries among Group B students at Al Barokah Kindergarten in Blega sub-district, Bangkalan district. This research is a quantitative study with a pre-experimental design of the one-group pretest-posttest type, in which a pretest will be given before the intervention and a posttest after the intervention. This study involved 30 respondents from group B of Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan kindergarten. Data analysis was carried out using the Wilcoxon test, with a result of sig = 0.000 < 0.05. Abstract

Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent oral health problems among preschool children, often linked to inadequate parental understanding of proper dental care. This study addresses the research problem of how maternal knowledge influences the occurrence of dental caries in preschool-aged children at PG/RA Muslimah NU Islamiyah Taman Sidoarjo. The aim was to determine whether maternal knowledge significantly correlates with children’s dental caries status. Using an analytical cross-sectional design, data were collected from 36 mother–child pairs selected through total sampling. Maternal knowledge was assessed using a structured questionnaire, while the children’s dental caries status was examined with a standardized dental health assessment sheet. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test with Fisher’s test as the corrective alternative. The results showed that 47.2% of mothers possessed sufficient knowledge, while 50% of children exhibited low levels of dental caries. A significant relationship was found between maternal knowledge and dental caries prevalence (p = 0.001), indicating that higher maternal knowledge is associated with a lower incidence of caries in preschool children. These findings confirm that mothers play a central role in promoting healthy oral hygiene behaviors and reducing caries risk during early childhood. In conclusion, maternal knowledge exerts a substantial influence on children’s oral health outcomes, highlighting the need for targeted parental education and health promotion programs. Interventions that enhance mothers’ understanding of proper dental hygiene practices may contribute significantly to reducing dental caries prevalence in preschool populations. Strengthening oral health literacy among mothers is therefore recommended as a preventive strategy to support healthier dental development in young children.
