Abstract

Abstract

This research is motivated by the ineffectiveness of stone model grinding machine in processing light, fibrous, and thin grain husk, so that a disc mill type FFC-15 grinding machine based on friction mechanism between discs was developed. The main objective is to analyze the effect of variations in husk type (mung bean, soybean, peanut) and hopper model (cylindrical, pentagonal, pyramidal) on production time, actual grinding capacity, level of fineness of the grinded results, and the extent to which differences in the physical characteristics of the husk affect the material flow rate in various hopper models with a test mass of 1 kg and a 1 mm sieve to understand the mechanism of non-homogeneous material flow in the grinding system. The experimental method involves testing the combination of the three types of husk and hopper, repeated three times, measuring production time, capacity (kg/hour), and percentage passing through a 1 mm sieve. The results showed an actual capacity of 2.70–4.71 kg/hour, where the pyramid hopper excelled with the shortest time, a maximum capacity of 4.71 kg/hour, and a fineness of 94.40% for mung bean hulls, while soybean hulls were the lowest due to unstable flow. The pyramid hopper proved to be the most effective in improving the hull grinding performance of grains.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of machine rotational speed and blade clearance on the performance of a wet coffee cherry hulling machine. The performance parameters evaluated include the percentage of peeled coffee cherries, the percentage of unpeeled cherries, and machine capacity. Identifying the influence of these parameters is expected to determine the optimal operating conditions that enable an effective and efficient peeling process without causing damage to the coffee beans. A common problem encountered in the field is the suboptimal peeling of wet coffee cherries, indicated by a high proportion of unpeeled cherries or bean damage due to improper machine settings. In practice, farmers and coffee processors often rely on approximate adjustments of blade clearance and rotational speed, resulting in inconsistent peeling quality and limited machine capacity. An experimental method was employed by testing a wet coffee cherry hulling machine at rotational speeds of 300 rpm, 350 rpm, and 420 rpm, combined with blade clearances of 2 mm, 4 mm, and 6 mm. The results show that smaller blade clearances produce higher peeling percentages, while increasing rotational speed tends to improve machine capacity. The optimal operating condition was achieved at a rotational speed of 420 rpm with a blade clearance of 2 mm, yielding the highest peeling percentage and the greatest machine capacity.

Abstract

Wet coffee bean processing at the household-scale farmer level is still largely carried out manually, requiring considerable time and labor while producing non-uniform bean quality. The use of wet coffee bean hulling machines is expected to improve post-harvest processing efficiency; however, in practice, several problems are still encountered, particularly in the coffee bean separation system. This study aims to design, construct, and test the performance of a household-scale wet coffee bean hulling machine and to analyze the performance of the separation system between hulled and unhulled coffee beans. The research method used was Research and Development (R&D), which included the stages of design, fabrication, and performance testing. The machine was designed using a single-phase electric motor with a power rating of 1 HP, a pulley and V-belt transmission system, a friction-based hulling mechanism, and a perforated screen as the coffee bean separation medium. Performance testing was conducted using post-harvest wet coffee beans at a shaft rotational speed of 420 rpm. The observed parameters included the machine’s ability to perform the hulling process and the hulling process time. The test results show that the wet coffee bean hulling machine is capable of performing the hulling process at a shaft rotational speed of 420 rpm and operates stably during the testing process. The coffee bean separation system functions in accordance with the design principles and is able to support wet coffee bean processing at the household scale. Based on the test results and analysis, the developed wet coffee bean hulling machine can be used as a supporting tool for household-scale wet coffee processing and has the potential for further development to improve performance and the effectiveness of post-harvest coffee processing.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the welding strength, specifically the SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) method, on ASTM A106 grade B carbon steel pipes. These pipes are commonly used in the oil and gas industry, making it important to understand the mechanical properties that occur after the welding process. Tensile testing was conducted on specimens taken from welded pipe joints, using SMAW as the welding method parameter. The results of the test indicate that the welding method significantly influences tensile strength, elongation, and other mechanical properties. This study found that maximum strength is achieved at certain parameters, highlighting the importance of control in the welding process to ensure joint quality. In addition, microscopic analysis of the microstructure shows that the composition and phase characteristics of the weld affect joint strength. The findings of this research are expected to provide guidance for industry in improving welding quality and the durability of carbon steel pipe joints, as well as serve as a reference for further studies in developing more efficient and effective welding techniques.

Abstract

PLA is a quite popular type of filament because this material is often used as a raw material for bioplastics which have the ability to decompose naturally. However, the price of PLA filament is also quite high, making it inaccessible to everyone, and there is a weakness in the characteristics of polylactic acid, namely its hydrophobic nature. Cassava peel starch as an alternative additive possesses a hydrophilic nature to cover the weakness of PLA's properties. However, an incorrect combination ratio of the two materials will worsen the structural strength of the PLA and cassava peel starch. The objective of this research is to analyze the tensile strength of polylactic acid material with cassava peel starch at ratios of (PLA) 60:40 (CPS), (PLA) 70:30 (CPS), and (PLA) 80:20 (CPS) on an extruder machine. This research uses a quantitative approach experimental method. The specimen preparation was carried out by first mixing the two materials according to the determined ratio, and then processing them in an extruder machine at a temperature of 160°C. The resulting specimens were tested following the ASTM D2256 standard. The research results show that the (PLA) 80:20 (CPS) ratio has the highest average tensile strength of 44.43 MPa with a tensile strain of 0,0241. Thus, the lower the starch ratio, the better the increase in the obtained tensile strength

Abstract

This study examines the influence of psychological factors and government support on consumers' purchase intention toward electric vehicles (EVs) in the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area by employing an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework. The model investigates the effects of emotional value, attitude toward EVs, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control (PBC), and the moderating role of government support. A quantitative survey method was applied to 291 potential EV consumers aged 18 years and above residing in Jabodetabek. Data were collected through an online Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4. The findings indicate that emotional value has a significant positive effect on attitude toward EVs, and both attitude and subjective norm significantly enhance purchase intention. Attitude is also found to significantly mediate the relationship between emotional value and purchase intention. Conversely, PBC does not exhibit a significant effect on purchase intention. Moreover, government support does not moderate the relationships between attitude or subjective norm and purchase intention and only shows a weak, negative moderating effect on the relationship between PBC and purchase intention. Overall, the results suggest that EV purchase intention in Jabodetabek is driven more strongly by emotional and normative factors than by perceived behavioral control or perceived government support.

Abstract

This research aims to design and assemble a semi-automatic centrifuge with a capacity of 1 kg that functions to separate liquid and particles in soy milk by utilizing centrifugal force. The need for this tool arises because commercial centrifuges are expensive, have limited capacity, and are less suitable for learning activities in educational laboratories and small-scale industries. The research method applies a Research and Development (R&D) approach that includes literature review, component design, assembly, functional testing, and evaluation of results. This tool is made using a 0.5 HP AC motor equipped with a speed controller via a dimmer and a pulley and V-belt-based transmission system. Tests were carried out at three variations of engine speed (700, 900, and 1100 rpm) and operating duration (15, 20, and 25 minutes) using soy milk samples. The test results show that the tool can run stably and successfully separate liquid from soy milk particles, as indicated by the formation of separate clear and creamy liquid layers. This research provides a contribution in the form of a prototype centrifuge that is economical, has a larger capacity, and is easy to use, so it has the potential to be a practical tool in educational laboratories and technology that is suitable for small-scale industries.

Abstract

Abstract

Plastic is widely used in Indonesia, but its non-biodegradable nature causes accumulation and environmental pollution. As a solution, more eco-friendly bioplastics have been developed. This study aims to produce and analyze pudding spoon molds made from Polylactic Acid (PLA) and cassava starch using the injection molding method. The process began with product and mold design using Autodesk Fusion 360 with product dimensions of 125.5 × 25.2 × 2 mm and mold dimensions of 132 × 60 × 35.6 mm. Mold Flow simulation was conducted to analyze parameters such as fill confidence, visual defects, warpage, air traps, and deflection. The mold was manufactured using CNC machining with aluminum 5052 material. The PLA and cassava starch mixtures were varied, heated at a mold temperature of 160 °C and injection temperature of 190 °C, with a cooling time of approximately 5 minutes. The comparison between simulation and actual results showed dimensional differences for each material variation. The largest deviation occurred at a ratio of 40% PLA and 60% cassava starch, reaching 14.9%, while the best result was obtained at a ratio of 50% PLA and 50% cassava starch with only 0.72% deviation from the initial design. This study indicates that material composition significantly affects the dimensional quality of bioplastic products produced through the injection molding process.
