The approach model used in this research is the Research and Development (R&D) approach. Development research is research that is used to produce certain products, to test the effectiveness of these products. Research is used to produce certain products that are needs analysis and test the effectiveness of these products to function in the wider community, thus research is needed to test the quality of these products. To achieve this, research and development has a gradual nature in producing its products. Abstract

An abstract is considered a miniature of a whole series of scientific works. The contents of each chapter in the entire scientific result must be represented in an abstract. However, various abstracts have different structures from one another. Thus, writers of scientific papers have a choice with the appropriate abstract form, but at the same time, they also have problems choosing which structure to use. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the designs of abstract writing from the EFL undergraduate students who different academic advisors guide. A qualitative method with content analysis was employed in this study by examining students' scientific work under the guidance of other supervisors in the form of theses with a focus on the abstract part. As a result of the research, it has been identified that most abstracts employed informative type and structured format with different compositions. In addition, the research results would contribute to the description of the abstract structure utilized by the students as the object of this research. Based on these findings, it can be suggested that understanding abstract construction can be employed by introducing different types of abstract and their format in academic writing courses or research methodology. The lecturer can apply the strategy of compiling leading questions for each abstract type. Answering the leading questions has guided the flow of abstract writing ideas in a thesis.

Abstract

Teachers frequently use textbooks as a media resource for instructional education purpose. A capability to understand a textbook being utilized is vital for students. However, the majority of research revealed that the textbooks used did not correspond to the actual level of students. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the textbook's readability level as well as any potential factors influencing its readability. This research employed a descriptive quantitative method to identify the textbook’s readability using the Miyazaki EFL Readability Index and students' judgments, as well as providing its readability factors. This study’s object included the Morphology textbook, and 36 English Language Education Department students batch 2021 at University of PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya. The first finding demonstrated that the textbook's readability using the Miyazaki EFL Readability Index had a very difficult readability level and best suited for graduate university students. The second finding showed that there were 68.52% of students or 25 students agree that the textbook was difficult to read. The third findings indicated that the percentage of factors affecting the textbook’s readability was 66.67% including the influence of reader factors (22.22%) and text factors (44.44%).

Abstract

This paper explores the strengths and limitations of the SmallTalk2Me App, an AI-driven language assessment tool, in evaluating English language proficiency. The study adopts a mixed-method approach, combining interviews with three experienced English teachers and a comprehensive literature review to provide a comprehensive analysis of the app's performance. The research begins with an exploration of the app's strengths, which include its objective and consistent evaluation metrics. The app's automated nature ensures that all test takers are assessed based on the same predefined criteria, reducing human bias and enhancing the reliability of evaluations. Also, it offers immediate feedback, allowing learners to identify their areas of improvement promptly and adapt their learning strategies accordingly. Conversely, the limitations of the SmallTalk2Me App are also discussed. One notable limitation is the challenge of replicating the complexity of real-life communication contexts. App-based assessments may not fully capture the intricacies of natural conversations. Additionally, the app's pronunciation assessment may struggle with accurately recognizing variations in accents and speech patterns, leading to potential inaccuracies in pronunciation evaluation. The insights from the interviews and literature review contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the app's performance, offering valuable implications for its effective use in language teaching and learning settings.

Abstract

This community service implementation aims to give EFL teachers new perspectives on managing the online materials using CI-LMS. The service employs a field observation method. The participants were high school EFL teachers in Sidoarjo district. The activities were a one-day seminar and online training using CI-LMS and WhatsApp group. The results of this study indicate that participants are satisfied with the training provided, but on the other hand, many participants seem not yet ready to use the CI-LMS shortly. CI-LMS is considered an excellent online learning media for developing the teaching and learning system during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, many teachers are not ready to use this platform at this time. For this reason, ongoing assistance to teachers is essential.
