Abstract

Language continues to develop along with the development of the society itself which then results in a phenomenon appearing in the society, this phenomenon is the emergence of language variations within the community in the form of vocabulary that is only known by people who are in the community this phenomenon also occurs in Mobile Legend Bang Bang. The purpose of this research is to find out the form, and the contextual meaning of the jargon contained in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. In this research, the researcher used the qualitative method. The data in the form of words and phrases were obtained from the smartphone especially the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang application, which is then recorded in digital notes. The data were analyzed using the qualitative data analysis technics by Donald Ary namely: organizing and familiarizing, coding and reducing, and enterpreting. The result showed that there were 44 jargons found in this research that is used by Mobile Legends: Bang Bang players namely: 16 in abbreviation form, 11 in word form, and 17 phrases form specifically, 8 in noun phrase, 8 in adjective phrase and 1 in verb phrase

Abstract

This research was conducted to the eleven grade student especially in science class of SMA Negeri 1 Tenga in the academic year of 2021-2022 odd semester. There were 28 students chosen as the sample of this research. To fulfil the purpose of the research, the researcher took experimental research involved one class to be given treatment. The data were obtained through pre-test and post-test. The hypothesis of this research indicated that there was a significant difference between the score of the pre-test and post-test. The score of the post-test got higher than the pre-test. The mean score of pre- test was 62.21 and the mean score of post-test was 79.25. Based on the results, the researcher concluded that teaching simple present tense by using transformation drill technique was effective because it can improve students’ ability in making simple present tense sentences correctly. And these techniques are appropriate to be applied.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the types of inflectional affixes in Ariana Grande’s song lyrics. The method employed in this research was the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were in the form of words from Ariana Grande’s song lyrics which consist of inflectional suffixes. The source of the data was five of Ariana Grande’s songs entitled ‘My Everything’, ‘One Last Time’, ‘Just a Little Bit of Your Heart’, ‘Point of View’, and ‘Almost is Never Enough’. The data were collected through listening to the songs, reading the lyrics, and taking notes of the words which consist of inflectional affixes. The results showed that there are seven types of inflectional affixes found in the song lyrics, which were noun plural, present participle, comparative, present third-person singular, past participle, past tense, and noun singular possessive. The type of inflectional affix which found the most is the present participle which occurs 18 times. Then, nine plurals with a total of 11 occurrences. After that, the following noun plural was past tense which was found in 6 different lyrics. Next was present third-person singular with 3 occurrences. Then, the fifth position was comparative which is found in 2 lyrics. Finally, the least used type of inflectional affixes was past participle and noun singular possessive which only appears one time each

Abstract

Native-speakerism issues are found in English teaching and learning around the world. This study aims to clarify how students perceive something like the characteristics of an ideal English teacher, and how students perceive learning English. This study was conducted at the Faculty of English Education, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Manado. A 17-item questionnaire taken from a previous related study was used and distributed to 32 students. The results of this study showed that most students do not recognize “native speakers” as a source of credibility and that the role model for imitating accents should be “native speakers”. Both “native speakers” and “non-native speakers” are recognized as equally good in grammar lessons.

Abstract

Analyzed the language style that use in “The Great Gatsby” movie was the purpose in this research. The theory of Martin Joos (1967) with the five differentiate styles namely frozen style, formal style, casual style, consultative style and intimate style were used to analyzed the language style in this research. In Conducting this research, descriptive qualitative method were used. The data were collected through watching the movie and reading the script of the movie. The steps of Miles and Huberman (1994:10) were used to analyzed the data, they were data reduction, data display and drawing conclusion. The result showed that there were one hundred and sixty-three (163) data included in five kinds of language style. There were zero (0) data in frozen style, thirty (30) data in formal style, one hundred and eight (108) data in casual style, fifteen (15) data in consultative style and ten (10) data in intimate style.  Casual style was dominantly in “The Great Gatsby” movie which found one hundred and eight (108) data. This study was focusing on the language style that used in a movie that usually we watch in the cinema or in the television. Through this research, the researcher hopes people can improve their speaking habits, know the language etiquette and use the right language style in the right place and for the right person. There are some suggestions for the future researcher who interested to analyze language style, they can conduct the study about the language style that taken from another media such as in the novel, comic book, or short movie from the youtube creator because nowadays, there are a lot of youtube content creator who made interesting short movie and the future researcher might use another theory of language style from the experts to give more knowledge about the language style in the other media.

Abstract

The present study dealt with the research problem: Are reading texts in 2020 summative assessment for fifth semester students at SMP Negeri Tompaso readable assessed using Flesch reading ease formula? The study is a quantitative content analysis with fifth semester summative test as the source of data. The data were reading texts with more than 100 words in length. The data were analyzed quantitatively using automatic online readability checker. Result of the data analysis indicates that of 6 reading texts that are analyzed, four (text 1, 2, 5 and 6) ranged from 79.4 (fairly easy to read) to 90.4 (very easy to read), one (66. I) is moderate or average, and still one (39.6) (3) is difficult to read. It can be concluded that only one of the analyzed texts is appropriate for the target students or test-takers. Consequently, test items assessing reading comprehension ability do not yield students reading ability properly.

Abstract

In Indonesian, English has been decided as a first foreign language by the    national education which can be learned started from elementary school up to        university  level, but there are some students who are not interested in learning English. One way to find out the reasons for students’ disinterest in English learning arises from the data is from their own perceptions. The purpose of this study was to describe students’ perceptions/opinions on English learning in SMP Katolik St. Theresia Tanawangko. Since it dealt with students’ perceptions/opinions, this study was categorized as a survey research. The sample of this study was ninth students at SMP Katolik St. Theresia Tanawangko in the academic year 2019-2020. Since students’ perceptions were the focus of this survey, the data were collected using a questionnaire. It focused on four indicators and the questionnaire itself consisted of 20 items with 5 items per indicator. Result of the data analysis leads the researcher to arrive at the following conclusions: (1) majority of the sampling students (87%) had positive attitudes toward English learning, (2) 90%  were strongly motivated to learn English or love learning English, and (3) 93% learn English because it is a compulsory subject. They learned the language for the following purposes: to have internet access (89%), get job in the future (95%), and widen their knowledge of the world (91%). After knowing students’ perceptions, it is important for English teacher to further increase motivation and foster a sense of courage in students at school, especially in English learning.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the kinds of errors made by students in pronouncing English and To find out the factors that causes these errors to occur. The researcher used qualitative research as method to analyze the data. The data were found from the students’ pronunciation of English Department at Universitas Negeri Manado in academic year 2020/2021. In analysis the data, the researcher used error analysis method by Corder as quoted by Ellis (1994: 48). There were some steps in applying the error analysis to analyze the data. The steps were 1) Collection of samples of learner language, 2) Identification of errors, 3) Classification of Error, 4) Explaining the Errors, 5) Evaluation of errors. Based on the result, researcher found 39 pronunciation errors made by the third semester student of English Education Department at Universitas Negeri Manado. The researcher also found out the factors that caused these errors to occur. The errors were caused by L1 native language disorder and the errors also caused by a lack of knowledge of the language that is the goal of learnig

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the teachers’ strategy of implementing the online learning. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative and the technique sampling used in this research was semi-stucture interview, coding, and classifying. The researcher used semi structure interview to find the data by distributing questionnaire. The population of this research were 5 teachers at SMP N 2 Tondano. The results showed that the strategies used by the teacher to increase students' interest in learning were to provide students with 1) Self Preparation, 2) Preparing brief, clear, easy to understand, and interesting learning material, 3) Choosing a simple and attractive learning media, 4) Involving parents for helping teachers in online learning, 5) Conducting regular and continuous evaluations. Teaching and learning activities through online can work well when teachers, students and parents can work together and support each other.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' perceptions of social media to learn English. It was conducted at the Department of English Education, Faculty of Languages ​​and Arts, Universitas Negeri Manado. The method used in this study is qualitative method. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire distributed 25 respondents of eight-semester students of the 2018 academic year. Students' reactions to each item in the spread questionnaire were examined and conferred by the researcher's understanding, opinion, experience, and outcome from hearing a song. As examples of all students, several questions were accepted positive. Based on the results, more than half of the students agree that YouTube song videos help them to improve their pronunciation skills because apart from being able to practice pronunciation, they also enhance their vocabulary. So, the results of this study indicate that learn through YouTube by using English songs video is more helps them to learn English. The research showed that YouTube songs video are a good learning source in learning English.
