Abstract

This research aims to examine how political communication messages are conveyed to the public through social media portals. Utilizing a qualitative approach with content analysis as the method, this study investigates posts from the Instagram account @whiteboardjournal. The analysis process is carried out objectively and systematically using semiotic theory, especially Ferdinand de Saussure's concepts of "sign" and "signifier." Data from @whiteboardjournal's content, supported by relevant communication theories and expert discussions, reveal the strategic use of social media, particularly TikTok, as a powerful tool for image restoration, reputation enhancement, and increasing political electability. The findings show that short, viral videos on TikTok can significantly reshape public perceptions, even of controversial leaders, by packaging light, entertaining content infused with subtle political messaging. This study contributes to the growing discourse on the intersection of digital media and political communication by providing new insights into how emotional appeals, symbolism, and algorithm-driven exposure on social platforms can influence political narratives. It highlights the transformation of TikTok from a mere entertainment medium into a political stage, especially in the context of the 2024 Indonesian presidential election. The research underscores the importance of critical media literacy among voters, especially Gen Z, who dominate social media usage. In conclusion, political communication in the digital era is no longer confined to traditional media but is increasingly shaped by the virality, visual language, and emotional engagement that platforms like TikTok afford.

This study aims to evaluate the development of scholarly discussions on the function of journalism within the field of communication studies. The keywords “communication” and “democracy” were used to search the Scopus database, resulting in 1,367 documents relevant to the scope of this research. Then, search criteria were applied by limiting the inclusion of articles to English-language journal publications published between 2013 and 2022. Based on these parameters, 527 documents met the research criteria. The data were subsequently processed using VOSviewer and Bibliometrix software. The outputs from both applications were combined to generate visual graphs that enabled the author to analyze and summarize the research findings. The study concludes that journalism, particularly in areas related to democracy, such as investigative journalism, press freedom, participatory journalism, and political dialogue, plays a significant role in advancing democratic processes. Future research on journalism and democracy may benefit from adopting thematic academic study formats and trending topics as reference points. The establishment of journalism grounded in democratic principles shows strong potential for success.

Abstract

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) face significant challenges as they navigate an increasingly competitive market. One effective strategy to enhance competitiveness is the use of social media, particularly Instagram. Croffle TOS, a snack business specializing in Croffle and Toast, established in 2021 in Umpur Harjo, remains relatively unknown to the public. This study aims to assist in the business development of Croffle TOS through digital marketing on Instagram by strengthening brand profiles, creating engaging taglines, and implementing promotional mix strategies. The analysis reveals that the lack of promotion on Instagram is a major obstacle in increasing brand awareness. By applying appropriate promotional strategies, such as attractive banners, engaging posts, and targeted consumer segmentation, it is expected to boost sales and expand brand recognition.
