Abstract

The role of the English is becoming increasingly crucial for students and other members of the community with the issuance of the Regulation on Key Performance Indicators (IKU) as a reflection of the success of a higher education institution in implementing the three pillars of higher education. English is needed to support IKU 1, which aims to produce graduates who can meet the qualifications needed by the workforce and those who advance their studies to a higher level, demanding English proficiency. Meanwhile, IKU 3 requires good oral and written communication skills so that students can intern in large and reliable companies within the Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) program. Another important demand is that the English proficiency is one of the indicators for students to be competitive internationally. However, this significant demand is not in line with the English language proficiency of students enrolled in state and private universities in the city of Mataram, many of whom are still at the basic and elementary levels. The purpose of this Community Service (PkM) is to enhance the knowledge and English skills of students with a focus on learning how to learn. The activity involves a tutoring session covering the basic concepts of learning how to learn, the learning process, learner autonomy in learning, and concludes with a Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The activity is led by a team of four Community Service Program members from the English Education Department at the University of Mataram. The activity takes place at the Mataram Lingua Franca Institute (Malfi) as the collaborating partner. Twenty participants from various state and private universities in the city of Mataram are involved in this PkM.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of conflicts experienced by the main characters in the movie Memoir of a Snail and to analyze the unfulfilled needs that cause these conflicts. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects studied were the main characters, Grace and Gilbert; the primary data source was the movie Memoir of a Snail and its transcript. Data was collected using the documentation method by repeatedly watching the movie and highlighting relevant dialogues and scenes. The data was then analyzed using Kenney's (1966) theory to classify conflicts and Maslow's (1970) hierarchy of needs to understand their needs. The findings reveal that the main characters face both internal conflicts (loneliness, trauma, anxiety, and the desire for freedom) and external conflicts (Man vs Man and Man vs Environment). This study concludes that these conflicts occur as a direct result of the main characters' unfulfilled needs. The absence of safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization needs creates significant emotional and social tension, which triggers their internal and external conflicts. This analysis provides insight into what specific unfulfilled needs serve as the primary cause of conflicts within the movie. It is suggested that future researchers explore this movie using different theories to gain a more comprehensive understanding.

Abstract

Keterlambatan penyelesaian skripsi masih menjadi permasalahan serius di banyak program studi kependidikan, termasuk Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Mataram.

Abstract

Abstract

Motivation plays a central role in determining students’ success in learning English, particularly in rural educational contexts where exposure to the language is limited. In many rural senior high schools in Indonesia, students demonstrate fluctuating levels of engagement due to limited facilities, minimal communicative practice, and restricted access to authentic English input. Despite the importance of motivation in second language acquisition, qualitative investigations focusing on rural senior high school contexts remain limited. Therefore, this study aimed to identify internal and external factors influencing students’ motivation and to examine instrumental and integrative motivational orientations among students at SMAN 1 Batukliang Utara. This research employed a qualitative case study design grounded in Gardner’s (1985) socio-educational model and Dörnyei’s (1998) motivational framework. The participants consisted of ten eleventh-grade students and two English teachers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. The data were analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke’s framework, using both deductive and inductive coding procedures. The findings indicate that internal motivation exists but is strongly influenced by students’ self-confidence and anxiety levels. External factors, particularly teacher encouragement, peer dynamics, and classroom atmosphere, significantly affect students’ engagement. Instrumental motivation is dominant, as students primarily associate English learning with academic achievement and career opportunities. Meanwhile, integrative motivation is present but remains underdeveloped and requires systematic reinforcement. The study concludes that students’ motivation is multidimensional and context-dependent, emphasizing the importance of balanced motivational development in rural EFL settings.
