Abstract

The measurement of human well-being and progress has long been a subject of interest across various disciplines. In the realm of economics, the Human Quality Index (HQI) emerges as a crucial metric for assessing the overall welfare and development of societies. This literature review delves into the conceptualization, methodologies, and applications of HQI, primarily from the perspective of economics theories. The HQI encompasses a multidimensional approach, capturing various aspects of human life beyond economic indicators. Drawing from the capabilities approach pioneered by Amartya Sen, HQI considers not only income but also factors such as health, education, environmental quality, and social inclusion. By acknowledging the intrinsic value of human capabilities, HQI offers a more comprehensive understanding of societal progress, aligning with the broader goals of sustainable development. Methodologically, HQI measurement involves the aggregation of diverse indicators into a single index, often through weighted averages or composite scoring systems. While this approach enables a holistic assessment, it also poses challenges regarding data availability, comparability, and subjective weighting. Furthermore, the choice of indicators and their respective weights can significantly influence the final HQI scores, highlighting the importance of transparency and stakeholder engagement in the measurement process. The literature reveals a plethora of applications for HQI, ranging from policy evaluation to international comparisons and advocacy efforts. At the national level, HQI serves as a tool for policymakers to monitor progress, identify areas for intervention, and prioritize resource allocation. Internationally, HQI facilitates cross-country comparisons, fostering peer learning and collaboration towards common development goals. Moreover, HQI advocacy efforts aim to raise awareness about human well-being beyond economic growth, advocating for policies that enhance quality of life and social justice. Despite its utility, HQI faces several critiques and methodological debates. Critics argue that HQI oversimplifies complex realities, neglects cultural differences, and imposes Western-centric notions of development. Methodologically, concerns arise regarding data reliability, indicator selection bias, and the treatment of interdependencies among dimensions. Addressing these challenges requires ongoing research, innovation, and collaboration across disciplines to refine HQI methodologies and ensure their relevance and robustness in diverse contexts. In conclusion, the Human Quality Index represents a significant advancement in measuring human well-being and progress from an economics perspective. By integrating multiple dimensions of human life and capabilities, HQI offers a more nuanced and holistic understanding of societal development. However, ongoing efforts are needed to address methodological challenges, enhance data quality, and promote inclusivity in HQI frameworks to ensure their effectiveness and relevance in guiding policy and fostering sustainable human development

Abstract

One indicator that can show the well-being of a country's population is the number of maternal and infant deaths. Hemorrhage, hypertension during pregnancy, and diseases of the circulatory system are the leading causes of maternal mortality. One of the factors that contribute to a mother's ability to identify early signs of pregnancy danger and conduct early treatment is her knowledge. One way to encourage health promotion is to use an appropriate method, namely brainstorming. This study aims to improve the knowledge of pregnant women about the danger signs of pregnancy before and after receiving health promotion through the Brain Storming method. In this study, researchers used a pre-experimental design with a one group pretest postest design. This study involved pregnant women consisting of 30 people to undergo pregnancy checks in the Cipeundeuy Health Center area through purposive sampling method. In collecting data, author used a questionnaire which was used to ask what pregnant women knew about danger signs that might occur during pregnancy. The marginal homogeneity test was used to analyze the data. The results showed that the brainstorming method was effective for improving the knowledge of pregnant women, with a p-value: 0.000 (p < 0.05). Brainstorming can increase maternal knowledge because in its implementation the client participates in expressing opinions and experiences. Therefore, health centers can use the brainstorming method to improve clients' knowledge about danger signs during pregnancy to prevent complications.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze international trade regulations related to the importation of goods into Indonesia; examine the implications of the widespread circulation of illegal textile products on the domestic textile industry; and assess Indonesia import policies in providing protection for domestic textile production. This research employs a normative legal method, utilizing both the Statutory Approach and the Conceptual Approach. Legal materials were collected through a literature review, using documentation techniques to analyze various sources of law in the form of statutory regulations. The results of the study indicate that international trade regulations are established in various laws, including Law Number 17 of 2006 concerning Customs; Law Number 7 of 2014 concerning Trade; Law Number 7 of 1996 concerning Food; and Law Number 8 of 1999 concerning Consumer Protection. The widespread circulation of illegal textile products (commonly known as thrifting) has led to several negative impacts, including the closure of numerous domestic textile industries, increased unemployment, and reduced state revenue. To address these issues, the Indonesian government has implemented various policies to protect the domestic textile industry through both preventive and repressive legal measures. Preventive legal protection includes regulations on import policy and supervision, guidance for business actors (producers, importers, and distributors), and public outreach to consumers. Repressive legal protection involves the imposition of administrative, civil, and criminal sanctions on those engaged in the illegal importation of textile products.

Abstract

Smallholder farmers in Svay Rieng Province, Cambodia, play a crucial role in the country's agricultural sector, particularly in vegetable production. Despite facing numerous challenges such as limited access to resources, climate change, and market uncertainties, these farmers contribute significantly to the national food security. This study aims to explore the technical knowledge, technical adaptation and practices of vegetable cultivation, and to analyze the economic efficiency of vegetable cultivation of farmers in Svay Rieng and Svay Chrum districts, Svay Rieng province, Cambodia. The household survey was conducted on 92 farmers in ten target communities, with at least three types of vegetables planted by each household. The result revealed that nearly two-thirds of farmers have over nine years of experience in vegetable cultivation, with most receiving technical training from the HEQCIP Project team. Nearly 70% of non-target farmers received training from government agencies and NGOs. A high percentage of survey farmers (90% target farmers and 75% non-target farmers) share their technical knowledge and experiences on vegetable cultivation with their relatives, neighbors, and other farmers in their communities. At least three different types of vegetables were planted by each household in target communities, including onion leaf, cucumber, wax gourd, gourd, cabbage, luffa gourd, herbs, morning glory, eggplant, pumpkin, spiny, and long-bean. The percentage of farmers who applied techniques provided by the project to integrate with their experiences was high (76% target farmers and 52% non-target farmers). However, only 17% target and 11% non-target farmers adapted the full technical packages provided by the project. The survey found that 75% of target and 50% non-target farmers improved their livelihood status, with 50% using their incomes from vegetable selling for income generation activities, 80% for purchasing household materials and equipment, and 10% for repaying in-debts.
