Abstract

The national food self-sufficiency program demands innovation in optimizing the selection of agricultural commodities based on environmental and weather conditions. This challenge is rooted in a fundamental problem faced by farmers—achieving harmony among soil characteristics, weather patterns, and suitable crops. In support of this initiative, it is necessary to develop a crop recommendation system based on machine learning that utilizes key soil and weather condition parameters. This study employs the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm, which functions by identifying the optimal value of ‘K’ to maximize classification accuracy. The KNN algorithm is implemented in a crop recommendation system to classify 1,100 datasets representing ideal growing conditions for 11 crop types. These datasets were generated using a normal distribution approach with a 5% variation from the mean values, and were validated using a clipping function to ensure the data remained within ideal ranges. The results of this study demonstrate that the KNN algorithm achieves high accuracy 96,67% in utilizing soil and weather parameters to generate crop recommendations. The average probability score for the recommended crops was 83.33%. Based on experimental testing, rice was recommended during the rainy and extreme rainy seasons, soybeans were recommended during the dry season, and mung beans were most suitable during extreme dry conditions.

Abstract

The main challenge in the briquette-making process is selecting the appropriate and proportionate reinforcement or adhesive. The chosen adhesive must not only provide strong adhesion but also be compatible with other components. Briquettes are alternative fuels in solid form, made from carbon-containing materials with a high calorific value, allowing them to burn for an extended period. Coal is one of the alternative materials that can be used for briquettes. The choice of adhesive type and composition directly influences the compressive strength, thermal stability, and durability of briquettes in various environmental conditions. This study aims to investigate how process parameters affect the compressive strength of briquettes produced from coal powder reinforced with molasses, to improve the efficiency of the briquette production process. The methodology used in this study is the Taguchi method. The process parameters include four factors, each with three levels, tested with three replications: the percentage of reinforcement or adhesive at levels of 10%, 12.5%, and 15%; pressure at levels of 8 MPa, 10 MPa, and 12 MPa; temperature at levels of 70 °C, 90 °C, and 110 °C; and heating time at levels of 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes. To enhance the comprehensiveness of the study, several factors, including the moisture content of the briquettes, have also been examined. The results indicate that the temperature during the drying process is the most significant factor influencing the production of these briquettes.

Abstract

This Community Service Program aims to address production challenges faced by the Berkah Utama Snack business group, which operates in the fishery processing industry, specifically the production of fish crackers and kemplang (fish crackers). The business group, led by Mrs. Rika Trisdasawati, is located in the Sinar Jaya neighborhood of Sinar Jaya Jelutung Village, Sungailiat District, Bangka. The main challenges faced by partners were limited and worn-out production equipment, including worn and unhygienic fish grinding machines, manual kneading processes, and low-capacity packaging equipment. This resulted in a production capacity of only 10 kg per day, insufficient to meet consumer demand. The implementation method for this activity involved six main stages: (1) identifying partner needs through field observations, (2) designing machines according to technical specifications using CAD software, (3) manufacturing machines at the Polman Negeri Babel Mechanical Workshop with the involvement of technicians and students, (4) operational testing with partners, (5) operational mentoring, and (6) technology dissemination to partners. The results of this activity demonstrated significant achievements in the form of the construction and delivery of three production machines. First, a fish grinding machine with a 40x40 mm L-shaped angle iron frame, a 5.5 HP internal combustion engine, and a pulley-belt transmission system. Second, a stainless steel dough mixer with a 550x450x550 mm dough tube, a Ø30x370 mm screw mixer shaft, and a gear system for heavy loads. Third, a packaging machine equipped with a 1500x800x700 mm table stand. Abstract

Technological developments have encouraged the use of generator sets as an alternative source of electricity, but this also causes problems, such as excessive heat production that disrupts comfort in the work area. This study aims to utilize sawdust and egg tray waste as heat-insulating materials for generator sets. Sawdust, which is often discarded, can be utilized to reduce the negative impacts of using generator sets and overcome environmental pollution caused by this waste. Previous studies have shown that the combination of sawdust and starch at certain temperatures can produce products with good compressive strength. The results of the ANOVA analysis in this study showed that the volume fraction of 35%: 15% with a thickness of 20 mm gave the highest heat absorption coefficient of 43.06°C, while the volume fraction of 40%: 10% with a thickness of 10 mm produced the lowest value of 35.8°C. These findings emphasize the importance of selecting volume fractions and thicknesses in increasing heat absorption efficiency, as well as providing alternative solutions for the management of sawdust and egg tray waste.

Abstract

Coal is one of Indonesia's most abundant energy and mineral resources in the mining sector, remaining a primary energy source globally. This study aims to analyze the effect of combining anthracite coal and coconut shell charcoal powder on the compressive strength of briquettes with variations in process parameters, including temperature, heating time, and water:molasses ratio as a binder. Briquettes were produced using a composition of 90% anthracite coal and 10% coconut shell charcoal powder, with molasses binders in ratios of 4:1 and 4:3. Compressive strength tests were conducted at temperatures of 100°C and 120°C with heating times of 60 and 90 minutes. The results indicate that the optimal combination to achieve the highest compressive strength was at a temperature of 120°C, a heating time of 90 minutes, and a water:molasses ratio of 4:3, yielding a compressive strength of 506.3 kPa (5.166 kg/cm²). Increasing temperature and a higher molasses ratio significantly improved the mechanical strength of the briquettes, while prolonged heating at lower temperatures tended to reduce compressive strength due to binder degradation. Therefore, further research is needed to optimize process parameters to meet national standards and enhance briquette durability.

Abstract

The transition away from reliance on fossil fuels is critical to fostering the development of renewable energy sources, with briquettes emerging as a particularly popular alternative. This study evaluates the effects of drying processes and variations in binder fractions on the compressive strength of anthracite briquettes. The briquettes were produced using binder fractions (water: dolomite lime) of 4:10, 4:12, 5:10, and 5:12 and subjected to mechanical pressures of 8, 9, and 10 tons with drying durations of 2, 4, and 6 days. The findings indicate that the 5:12 binder fraction achieved the highest compressive strength of 544 kPa after 6 days of drying, reflecting enhanced mechanical strength due to increased dolomite lime content. Conversely, an optimal drying time of 4 days was identified, balancing moisture reduction and briquette structural stability. This research provides valuable insights for developing high-quality briquettes as efficient and environmentally friendly renewable energy sources.

Abstract

The Indonesian government recognizes the importance of transitioning away from dependence on fossil fuels. Briquettes are becoming the most popular option for overcoming fossil fuel dependence. This study examines the effect of the drying process and variation of anthracite mixture with wood sawdust on ash content and volatile matter in briquettes. The study used a factorial method with three process variables: water and molasses fractions, temperature, and holding time. The results showed that the highest ash content was obtained in briquettes with a water and molasses fraction of 1:1, while the lowest ash content was at a fraction of 2:1. The temperature and drying time also affected the ash content, where lower temperature and longer drying time resulted in lower ash content. Regarding volatile matter, briquettes with a drying temperature of 120°C and a drying time of 60 minutes produced the lowest volatile matter content. This study concludes that combining the drying process and the right mix of ingredients can improve the quality of briquettes, although the results obtained have not met the established SNI standards.
