Abstract

Rice plants (Oryza sativa) are among the most significant food crops in human life. Efforts to increase food production face a variety of challenges, including droughts. Drought stress is abiotic stress that has a significant impact on rice plant growth and development. Plants treated with salicylic acid are more resistant to water shortage. Salicylic acid influences plant growth in terms of weight, height, and grain yield. The use of salicylic acid may increase the weight of plant seedlings. The purpose of this study was to determine how rice plant productivity responds to the addition of salicylic acid during drought stress. The study was carried out in a greenhouse from August to December 2020 utilizing a Completely Randomized Design with two variables: plant variety and drought stress. The cultivars used were Indragiri, Mendawak, and IR64. The drought treatment factors were control, drought stress, and drought stress treated with salicylic acid. There were nine treatment combinations and three replications, totaling 27 experimental units. The data collected were analyzed using Analysis of Variance. If significant differences were discovered, the analysis was extended with Duncan's Multiple Range Test at a 95% confidence level. The findings revealed that both individual factors and their interactions had a substantial influence on various variables. The interaction factor had a substantial impact on pollen fertility, panicle length, number of full grains, weight per 1,000 grains, and yield potential. The rice variety had a substantial effect on pollen fertility, panicle length, number of filled grains, and yield potential, but not on the weight of 1000-grains. Keywords: drought stress, rice, salicylic acid

Abstract

Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE) of Maize is considered low. There are two important factors  responsible for this condition: (a) uniform fertilizer recommendation, (b) lack of consideration on soil variability, Indigenous Nutrient Supply and plant nutrient needs.  A method for studying low NUE and the capability of studying these two factors are urgently required. This study used Quantitative Evaluation of Fertility on Tropical Soils (QUEFTS) model. The main aim of this study was to employ and evaluate QUEFTS model for establishing site specific fertilizer recommendation in maize on the basis of farmer fields. Due to a unique characteristic of farmer field, it may be interesting to observe the pattern of soil fertility in relation to yields.  Six farmer's fields and thirty soil samples were taken and analysed in the laboratory. The results showed that QUEFTS model was a valuable tool to make fertilizer recommendation by using yields as an integrated indicator. The results also showed that QUEFTS model was a promising method for establishing fertilizer recommendation for maize. The merits of model for determining Indigenous Nutrient Supply, nutrient yield limiting factors, balanced fertilizer recommendation show that QUEFTS model is a valuable tool for site specific fertilizer recommendation.   Keywords: QUEFTS, recommendation, site specific, yield

Abstract

Jember Regency is one of the national food storage areas. One of the most important resources in cultivating food crops is water which comes from rainfall. The existence of rainfall data is very important in planning and implementing agricultural activities. Limited rainfall data is the main problem for agricultural planning. One solution to this problem is to utilize rainfall data from CHIRPS (Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation Station). The use of CHIRPS data is still biased data, so bias correction is needed to measure the level of accuracy of CHIRPS data for estimating rainfall in an area. Bias correction is carried out using two methods, namely multiple linear regression and power regression. The correction results show that the multiple linear regression method is able to produce monthly rainfall that is close to observations with an RMSE value of 3.9 and a coefficient of determination of 0.99. Temporally, the peak of the rainy season in Jember Regency occurs in December while the dry season is in August. In the rainy season (December-January and February) Jember Regency's rainfall is around 300-500 mm/month and in the dry season (June-July-August) it is in the range of 50-200 mm/month. Spatially, the northern part of Jember, especially Sumberbaru, Bangsalsari and Tanggul subdistricts, is wetter than the Jember Regency area as a whole. The southern part of Jember, especially those close to the coast, has lower rainfall than other regions. In the dry season, rainfall in this region is less than 20 mm/month.

Abstract

The excessive use of inorganic fertilizers in the cultivation of bird’s eye chili (Capsicum frutescens L.) can lead to land degradation and reduced soil fertility, resulting in suboptimal plant growth and yield. One promising solution to address this issue is the utilization of catfish aquaculture wastewater as a raw material for liquid organic fertilizer (LOF). The nutrient content in catfish wastewater, such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), supports plant development. This study aimed to determine the effect of the combination of LOF from catfish wastewater and various NPK fertilizer doses on nitrogen uptake and the growth of bird’s eye chili plants. The research was conducted at the Greenhouse of the Agrotechnopark, University of Jember, from December 2024 to March 2025, using a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors: LOF type (no LOF, fresh LOF, and fermented LOF) and NPK dosage (10 g, 15 g, and 20 g per plant). Data were analyzed using ANOVA and further tested with DMRT at a 5% significance level. The results showed that the combination of fermented liquid organic fertilizer (POC) application and NPK dosage of 15 g per plant (or 300 kg/ha), which significantly affected the variables of plant height, number of leaves, number of branches, and root dry weight. It can be concluded that the utilization of catfish aquaculture wastewater as a liquid organic fertilizer, combined with a 25% reduction in NPK fertilizer dosage, can promote plant growth.

Abstract

Red chili is one of the agricultural commodities cultivated in Kepanjen Village, Gumukmas District, Jember Regency. The unpredictable fluctuations in weather demand the application of modern agricultural technology that can enhance productivity while ensuring the sustainability of cultivation. As part of a community service program, the dutch bucket hydroponic system placed inside a greenhouse was introduced as an alternative solution for red chili cultivation. The program was implemented through three stages, namely preparation, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation, with students actively involved as facilitators and the community as the main partners. During the implementation stage, a greenhouse measuring 3 × 6 meters (18 m²) was successfully constructed, and a dutch bucket hydroponic installation was set up to accommodate 60 chili plants. The results of the activity showed that farmers and community members who participated in the socialization responded positively and demonstrated high enthusiasm toward the cultivation method applied. Thus, this program not only produced physical facilities in the form of a greenhouse and hydroponic installation but also contributed to improving the knowledge and skills of the community in adopting modern agricultural technologies.
