Abstract

This study examines Rozy, the first virtual influencer in South Korea produced by Sidus Studio X. Rozy has @rozy.gram as her Instagram social media account which was created on August 19th, 2020. This 22 years old woman is a virtual human representation on Instagram account. Within three months of the account had been released, she had 13,000 followers. Until now, the number has grown to more than 126,000 followers. It makes some advertisings use Rozy as the virtual influencer carries out the role as a marketing strategy. Rozy's Instagram content features four themes, such as fashion, traveling, environment, and daily activities. This study aims to explore the hypersemiotic hierarchy of Rozy's on @rozy.gram account. This study uses a hypersemiotic approach to understand meaning outside of reality. The researchers use descriptive qualitative method to examine the meaning of the signs system. In Rozy's world as a virtual influencer, there are engineering of realities that transcend boundaries by using information and communication technologies. Rozy lives in a reality that are detached from the truth of reality. Through hypersemiotic analysis, it shows that the virtual influencer Rozy is able to trick the human mind and blur the boundaries of reality between real and fake, natural and artificial, and real and unreal. The audiences of Instagram need to be rational, skeptical, and critical in responding to virtual influencers.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article contains a study of film adaptation from a literature media (novel) into audio-visual media(film). This research is a case study of Perempuan Berkalung Sorban film by Hanung Bramantyo, whichwas adapted from a novel with the same title that was written by Abidah el-Khalieqy. By combining a textanalysis method from Thomas Leittch, Mathew T. Jones’ film adaptation theory and the result of interviewto confirm the text analysis, this research produced some interesting findings. The research verified thatthe adaptation’s process does not merely focus on technical issue in media adaptation (from novel tofilm), but also focuses on another aspects that will involve the audience i.e. a fact that text and dialoguebecome references that will be appreciated by audience. As a result, there were excessive distortions anddeviations on the text that were created by the film maker caused a bias interpretation. Audiences nolonger interpreted the film as a visual text objectively. Instead, they would think about certain prejudiceagainst the film maker. In film adaptation, certain tendencies of film maker are easy to be predicted byaudience. This fact has caused film adaptation becomes controversial easily.Keywords: Media Adaptation, Transformation, Opposition, ControversyABSTRAKArtikel ini berisi kajian tentang alih media, yakni dari media verbal sastra (novel) kemedia visualfilm. Kajian ini berupa studi kasus terhadap film Perempuan Berkalung Sorban karya HanungBramantyo, yang merupakan adaptasi dari novel dengan judul sama karya Abidah el-Khalieqy.Dengan menggunakan metode gabungan, yakni analisis teks yang berdasar pada teori adaptasifilm dari Thomas Leittch, Mathew T. Jones, dan wawancara tertulis untuk mengkonfirmasianalisis teks tadi, kajian ini menemukan hal menarik, yakni alih media bukan sekedar persoalanteknis pemindahan media, melainkan juga pemindahan yang menimbulkan efek-efek tertentubagi penonton. Apresiasi penonton dilandasi kesadaran bahwa terdapat teks lain yang menjadirujukan film bersangkutan. Akibatnya, distorsi dan deviasi yang terlalu jauh yang dilakukansutradara atas teks sumber berpotensi mengakibatkan bias pemahaman. Penonton tidak lagimemaknai film sebagai teks visual secara objektif, tetapi juga dibarengi praduga-pradugatertentu terhadap sutradara. Pada genre film alih media, tendensi tertentu dari sutradara mudahdibaca penonton. Fakta ini mengakibatkan film sangat rentan menimbulkan kontroversi.Kata Kunci: alih media, transformasi, oposisi, kontroversi

Abstract

Gagasan perawatan dalam desain dan arsitektur melekat pada karya perempuan desainer se- bagai bentuk kebertubuhan perempuan yang berhubungan dengan konteks sosial. Demikianlah peran perempuan dalam tatanan sosial yang sering diasosiasikan dengan perawatan dan peng- asuhan seperti layaknya alam telah menggemakan dualisme gender, yang turut mempengaruhi perbedaan karakteristik desain yang diciptakan oleh keduanya. Beberapa penelitian sebelum- nya telah mengeksplorasi gagasan desain perawatan, terutama dalam arsitektur, mencakup eksplorasi material alami yang dapat menyampaikan identitas budaya, pengalaman multisen- sorik, dan arsitektur afektif. Namun, studi mengenai karya perempuan desainer, khususnya dalam arsitektur yang merangkul konsep ‘desain perawatan’, dan berfokus pada kebertubuhan masih kurang dieksplorasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami gagasan perawatan se- bagai bentuk kebertubuhan perempuan desainer yang terefleksikan dalam karyanya, dengan studi kasus desain arsitektur Yayasan Kampung Halaman di Yogyakarta oleh Novi Kristinawa- ti. Melalui metode semiotika, khususnya analisis multimodal teks dari Gunther Kress dan Theo van Leeuwen, makna perawatan diungkapkan melalui penelusuran tiga metafungsi: makna representasi, makna interaktif, dan makna komposisi yang muncul dari mode-mode sebagai sumber semiotika. Temuan studi ini memperlihatkan bahwa Novi Kristinawati merefleksikan kebertubuhannya dalam desain Yayasan Kampung Halaman. Gagasan perawatan sebagai bentuk kebertubuhan perempuan antara lain: muncul dalam simbol arketipe ibu; desain yang memberikan pengalaman multisensori dengan mengaburkan batas antara eksterior alam dan interior; desain yang fleksibel dan mengalir yang memenuhi nilai guna serta dapat memfasil- itasi jarak sosial pengguna desain; mengutamakan kesetaraan dan pengakuan kedua gender dalam desain tanpa sekat; serta desain yang mampu mendengarkan kebutuhan pemesan de- sain. Penelitian ini adalah upaya untuk memahami desain dalam kerangka kebertubuhan per- empuan dan kontribusinya dalam wacana pengetahuan desain. Abstract

Art film is a film full of symbols. The film Setan Jawa by Garin Nugroho (2016) brings the concept of a silent film and the cinematic-orchestral collaboration with various standards across arts, while also adapts some cultural narratives in the Javanese context. This film presents Drupadi narrative, one of the Javanese Wayang cultural narratives. Drupadi is often referred to as a symbol of women’s loyalty and obedience to the universal law, through her obedience to her husband and mother, although this obedience is contrary to the self (I) concept. With the help of textual analysis, this article aims to identify the adaptation of Drupadi’s cultural narrative that is creatively transposed in the film Setan Jawa. The results show that there is a director’s personal code (idiolect) in the film, that offers women’ representation different from the conventions in the Javanese culture. While the conclusion might be arguable, one can reflect on the symbolic act of women’s representation being creatively transposed not as subordinate but as having the power to fulfill their own destiny.

Abstract

The increasing number of foreign tourist visits to Komodo National Park requires naturalist guides to have good communication skills in foreign languages, especially in English. Therefore, the Media Literacy and Visual Culture Expertise Group held English communication skills training for naturalist guides in Pasir Panjang Village, Komodo Islands. This training uses lecture, discussion, and direct practice methods of speaking English that are tailored to the needs of tour guides. The materials presented include how to communicate effectively with foreign tourists using English and the skills of promoting tourist destinations on social media. The evaluation results of this training showed that most tour guides in Pasir Panjang Village (96.2%) considered the materials presented to improve their knowledge and communication skills in English and all participants (100%) considered the materials presented interesting.
