Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the variations of twelve chemical elements (Ni, Fe, Co, Mg, Mn, Al, Si, Zn, Ti, P, Ca and Cr) in laterite soil profiles from Wantulasi area in South East Sulawesi Province of Indonesia. Eighty four (84) samples of three profiles (i.e. each profile consists of eight samples) had been used to study their variations in soil using the X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF). Results analysis of the chemical elements content in three profile using XRF indicated that there were good correlationsbetween the chemical elements in the soil profile with the significant correlations were found in Ni and Fe, Ni and Si, Ti and P, Fe and Al, and Co and Mn, respectively. On the other hand, the results of study showed that the variations of the chemical elements could be related to the enrichment and translocation of the elements in soil profile and also their possibilities to be related with a given chemical elements in soil profile. Therefore, we suggest that the observed patterns in chemical elements with a good correlation in laterite profile can be used as proxies to integrate the evaluation of the chemical and physical weathering process based on the elements characteristics in soil profiles.

Abstract

Geography learning about spatial patterns of villages and cities in high schools still faces obstacles in students' understanding of concepts due to teacher-centered learning. This study aims to determine the effect of problem-based learning (PBL) models with the help of Canva media on students' conceptual understanding. Quasi-experimental research was conducted at SMAN 10 Kendari on class XII IPS students. Class XII IPS.1 was designated as an experimental class that learned using problem-based models combined with Canva media, and class XII IPS.2 became a control class with conventional learning methods based on the same abilities. Research data were collected through a concept understanding test and then analyzed using parametric inferential statistical tests. The analysis using independent sample t test after get the normality and homogenity test. The results of the t-test showed a significance value of 0.000, with students in the experimental class having a higher increase in conceptual understanding than those in the control class. This finding shows that PBL utilizing Canva media has proven to be effective in helping students understand the subject matter in problem-oriented learning steps and media that attract students' attention. This study implies that the use of Canva digital media in PBL can be an effective strategy to improve students' conceptual understanding. Teachers are advised to use Canva digital learning media as a teaching aid, especially when implementing PBL, so that students can more easily understand the concepts being studied.

Abstract

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) is one of the main agricultural commodities cultivated by the community in Mataupe Village. However, the economic condition of patchouli farmers varies considerably, indicating the need for a more in-depth study of their socioeconomic aspects. This research aims to describe the economic condition of patchouli farmers in Mataupe Village, Andoolo Barat Subdistrict, South Konawe Regency. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through observation, questionnaires, and documentation. The results showed that the size of farmland managed by farmers varies: 15 farmers (36%) cultivate less than 0.5 hectares, 15 farmers (36%) cultivate 0.5 hectares, 10 farmers (24%) manage between 0.5–2 hectares, and only 2 farmers (4%) own 2 hectares of land. In terms of income, based on BPS (Central Bureau of Statistics) classification, 33 farmers (78.6%) fall into the very high-income category, 6 farmers (14.3%) into the high-income category, and 3 farmers (7.1%) into the moderate-income category. Regarding household expenditure, 2 farmers (5%) have very high expenditures, 11 farmers (26%) high, 18 farmers (43%) moderate, and 11 farmers (26%) low. These findings illustrate the diverse economic capacities among patchouli farmers in Mataupe Village, which are strongly influenced by differences in land size, production scale, and household spending priorities.

Abstract

The critical thinking ability of students at SMAN 12 Kendari is still relatively low because the learning process tends to be teacher-centered. This study aims to: 1) determine student activities in applying critical thinking skills during learning the Introduction to Geography material, and 2) determine teacher activities after applying the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model on the same material. This study is a classroom action research. The results of the study indicate that: 1) the implementation of learning using PBL in cycle I obtained an average activity score of 2.7 by teachers and 2.5 by students, while in cycle II it increased to 3.5 for teachers and 3.6 for students; 2) students' critical thinking ability based on the Learning Objective Achievement Criteria of 75 also increased, where the percentage of completion in cycle I reached 70%, and increased in cycle II to 93.33%. Thus, it can be concluded that the application of the PBL learning model is effective in improving students' critical thinking ability in the Introduction to Geography material at SMAN 12 Kendari. This PBL model can be used as an alternative learning strategy that encourages students to be more active and analytical, while also helping teachers create a more student-centered learning process.
