Abstract

Supporting the realization of the nation's golden generation in 2045 with productive, creative, innovative and affective characteristics, one way to hone these abilities is to provide questions based on HOTS. However, it is known that many Japanese exam questions are not based on HOTS. Because of this, the author is interested in examining more deeply the questions on JLPT N4 exam sheet, so that it can be used as a reference in making HOTS-based Japanese exam questions. This qualitative research using descriptive method and collecting data using documentation techniques. The problem in this research is: 1) How is the implementation of the HOTS and LOTS-based questions on the JLPT level N4 test sheet?, 2) What are the characteristics and forms of the HOTS and LOTS-based questions? To answer the problem formulation above, the author uses the revised edition of Bloom's theory regarding cognitive levels and the theory of the Kemendikbud (2017) regarding the implementation of HOTS. The results showed that the percentage of questions that implemented HOTS was 43% and 57% LOTS out of a total of 70 multiple choice questions only. The characteristics of the HOTS questions is measure higher-order thinking skills and are based on contextual problems.

Abstract

Abstract The study aims to analyze the form of sonkeigo expressions, the representation of uchi-soto concept in the Japanese animated series entitled “Hataraku Maou-sama”. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with passive participation methods with secondary data source. The source is oral data and transcripts of the dialogue of “Hataraku Maou-sama” with episodes from 1-13 and obtained from Bstation with a duration of 23 minutes each. The results showed that the prefixes and suffixes such are “o”, “go”, “-san” and “-sama” are widely used as expressions of sonkeigo because they are used to respect things related to the interlocutors, followed using sonkeigo special verbs. Based on the relationships between each character, the concept of soto is more often described in the usage of sonkeigo because of the unfamiliarity between each character, as well as the speaker assumes that the interlocutors are “outsiders”. It can be concluded that in the use of sonkeigo expression needs to consider the concept of uchi-soto to communicate smoothly.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental aspect of foreign language learning; however, it often becomes a major challenge for learners due to its complex and diverse semantic nature. Previous studies with similar research focus have shown that such difficulties are influenced by various factors, including inadequate teaching methods, first-language interference, and the low frequency of practice activities that support lexical mastery. This study presents the results of an error analysis in Japanese vocabulary acquisition at the intermediate level, equivalent to level N3 on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) scale. The respondents were 25 adult learners aged between 20 and 23 years. Data were collected using a mixed-methods approach and employed three instruments: JLPT N3 based vocabulary test items, the Language Experience and Proficiency Questionnaire (LEAP-Q) developed by Marilyn Logan (2007), which was adapted and modified for this study, and semi structured interviews. The data were analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The findings indicated that the participants’ average level of Japanese vocabulary mastery was 64%, based on the analysis and calculations discussed. The vocabulary errors identified in this study were categorized into errors and mistakes. It is recommended that learners engage in more intensive reading and composition practice. Future research is advised to involve a larger number of participants with more diverse first-language backgrounds and to utilize more secure testing platforms to minimize the potential for cheating.

Abstract

In the current era, technology is utilized for various activities, including learning. Learning applications are one such example, and they can be used as a medium for self-learning and corrective feedback. This study utilized an application called Hitokoma Kanji for kanji writing practice. The research sample consisted of 14 participants from second-year students of the Department of Japanese Language Education at FPBS UPI. This study aims to find out the process of kanji writing practice and corrective feedback using the Hitokoma Kanji application for four meetings. The method used in this research is qualitative. This research is explorative or preliminary, so the data taken is based on observation activities through screen recordings to understand how the Hitokoma Kanji application can affect kanji learning rather than conducting tests. The result of this study is the use of the Hitokoma Kanji application as a kanji writing practice media, and the Extrusion/Lenght Check feature helps participants to remember the order of scribbles and the shape of scribbles on kanji by the writing rules.

Abstract

The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture has implemented an independent learning curriculum in all education-level units since January 2020. Many changes occurred with the implementation of the new curriculum. In independent learning curricula, fostering higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) is crucial, especially when developing complex sentence writing proficiency for beginners. This study aimed to improve beginner Japanese learners' ability to construct complex sentences in written activity by utilizing FlipPdf-Pro-based e-modules. These modules incorporated audio, video, and digital applications, making the learning process engaging and self-paced. The study involved 60 students in their third year who had been studying Japanese for one year in a high school in Malang. This study is classroom research using qualitative descriptive methods. Research data was collected through observation, tests, and questionnaires. Observations indicated enthusiastic participation, and questionnaires revealed that participants comprehended how to construct simple, complex sentences and could apply them effectively in written contexts. Over 80% of participants expressed a positive attitude towards learning through FlipPdf-Pro-based e-modules and recognized the importance of digital media in Japanese language learning. Furthermore, the test results demonstrated the participants' satisfactory ability to write complex sentences, meeting criteria in three key aspects: sentence structure in subordinate clauses, cohesion between main and subordinate clauses using the conjunctive phrase -no toki 'when', and coherence in the meaning of complex sentences. Based on test results, response questionnaires, and observations, these findings confirmed that using FlipPdf-Pro-based e-modules effectively enhances learners' proficiency in writing complex sentences.

Abstract

The increasing number of internships from Indonesia to Japan provides opportunities for institutions offering Japanese language training. Based on data from the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower, 300 Sending Organizations (SO) are legally authorized to send interns to Japan. However, many Vocational Training Institutions (Lembaga Pelatihan Kerja or LPK) are managed by business operators without a background in Japanese language education. Their Japanese language training programs primarily focus on preparing candidates to pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) levels N5-N3, as Japan’s Ministry of Labor requires. This results in less attention given to proper learning implementation, appropriate textbook selection, relevant evaluation methods, and other aspects of quality instruction. This community service activity (PkM) aims to transfer knowledge and provide insights to Japanese language training providers and LPK instructors, particularly on creating Learning Implementation Plans (RPP). The partners in this community service project are LPKs located in the Province of Bali. The PkM activities will be conducted through training and mentoring, with training sessions held online and mentoring sessions conducted offline. The expected outputs of this PkM activity include drafts of RPPs created by the training participants, publication of PkM results in the form of scientific articles in national journals, activity videos, presentations at national or international seminars (such as ICJLE/ICOLLITE), media publications, and intellectual property rights (HKI).
