Abstract

Abstract

Traditional calendars often embody complex knowledge systems that remain underexplored in formal academic discourse, especially in the context of indigenous mathematics. This study investigates the mathematical structures embedded in the Javanese Aboge calendar, a traditional timekeeping system preserved by the Aboge community in Cikakak Village, Banyumas Regency, Indonesia. While the official Javanese calendar has transitioned to the Asapon kurup, the Aboge community continues to follow the older Aboge kurup, rooted in local belief and tradition. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and ethnographic methods—comprising field observations, interviews, and collaborative computations—this study examines the underlying mathematical logic of the calendar. The findings reveal that the Aboge calendar applies modular arithmetic, particularly congruences modulo 7 (days) and modulo 5 (pasaran), to determine the first day of each month. These values follow recursive patterns modeled using mathematical formulas. Additionally, the Chinese Remainder Theorem is employed to calculate intervals between specific day-pasaran pairs, validating traditional practices through formal mathematical reasoning. The results demonstrate that the Aboge calendar encapsulates sophisticated mathematical concepts traditionally transmitted through memorization. This study highlights the value of cultural diversity and affirms the role of indigenous knowledge in sustainable development, reinforcing the importance of integrating local traditions into educational and heritage preservation efforts.

Abstract

The curriculum is a set of educational program plans used as guidelines for implementing learning activities to achieve national education goals. The independent curriculum is newly established in Indonesia and will undoubtedly influence learning, including mathematics. This research aims to analyse the impact of changes to the independent curriculum on mathematics learning. This research uses the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method by reviewing articles and identifying, analysing, and concluding several studies that have been conducted previously. Article searches were done using the Google Scholar search engine and the publish or perish application. The research results found that the development of the independent curriculum had a significant influence on mathematics learning. The positive impact of implementing mathematics learning is that students' abilities in mathematics increase, and teachers can increase their ability to innovate and be creative. Meanwhile, the negative impact of implementing mathematics learning is that there are still insufficient teachers and difficulty creating learning tools.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to explore the mathematical aspects of various Gumelem batik motifs typical of Banjarnegara Regency. The background of this study is the lack of mathematical studies that focus on this batik. The method used is descriptive qualitative with an ethnographic approach through direct observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with batik artisans. Data analysis was carried out by identifying mathematical elements such as plane geometry, similarity, congruence, geometric transformations, algebraic principles, and number sequence patterns. The results show that Gumelem batik motifs contain various mathematical components. The Watu Pecah motif contains the concepts of triangles, rhombuses, and congruence. The Gedong Kosongan Coletan motif depicts similarity and the Two-Variable Linear Equation System (SPLDV). The Kawung Plangkah Merak motif includes dilation and rotation, while the Babon Angrem motif applies reflection and the Dieng Temple motif shows translation. In addition, the Udan Liris motif depicts the concept of number sequences. This study confirms the great potential of Gumelem batik as a local culture-based mathematics learning medium (ethnomathematics) that is relevant to local wisdom.

Abstract

Mathematics is not only manifested as a formal symbolic system but also develops as a form of thinking embedded in cultural practices. This study aims to analyze the mathematical elements of the kayon (gunungan) in Kebumen shadow puppetry as representations of mathematical practices and to examine their relevance for geometry education. A qualitative interpretative approach within the framework of ethnomathematics was employed using an emic–etic perspective. Data were collected through visual observation, semi-structured interviews with a puppeteer-craftsman, and documentation supported by relevant literature. The data were analyzed thematically and interpretatively by linking cultural practices with formal mathematical concepts. The findings reveal that the triangular structure, reflective symmetry, repetitive ornament patterns, and height–width proportions of the kayon function as practical mechanisms for achieving aesthetic balance and functional stability rather than merely as visual forms. These results demonstrate that non-formal mathematical knowledge possesses epistemological legitimacy within its cultural context. This study contributes to the theoretical development of ethnomathematics by repositioning cultural artifacts as representations of mathematical practices and provides a conceptual foundation for culturally responsive geometry learning.
