The lack of available emergency response vessels highlights the urgent need for effective disaster mitigation measures. This community engagement project aimed to address this issue through training that combined soft skills, such as understanding ship design criteria, appropriate construction materials, and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), with hard skills on the practical production process of fiberglass speed boats according to applicable standards and rules. The activities were conducted at the Shipbuilding Institute of Polytechnic Surabaya (PPNS) and involved international students participating in the 2024 Summer Camp program along with local fishermen from Kenjeran, Surabaya. A total of 16 participants joined, consisting of 10 international students and 6 local fishermen. The training activities included an introduction to ship design using the spiral design method, sessions on FRP materials and production techniques, and hands-on boat building practice using the hand lay-up method carried out over five days. The final product, a 5.05-meter-long speed boat made from Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP), was officially handed over to the Kenjeran fisherman group as a maritime preparedness asset. This project not only addressed local safety concerns but also promoted international collaboration and showcased PPNS’s expertise in shipbuilding and maritime education. The training resulted in significant improvements, with an average 56.6% increase in participants’ understanding of materials and a 60.8% increase in practical skills for building FRP boats, preparing them for safer operations and future entrepreneurship.

Abstract

The phenomenon of declining communication politeness among elementary school students shows the importance of value-based learning strategies. This article discusses how Indonesian language learning can enhance Islamic values and foster polite communication skills among learners. This research uses qualitative techniques with a case study design at SD Negeri Cipondoh Makmur, which combines observation, interviews, and documentation on learners, teachers, and parents. Language skills (listening, reading and viewing, speaking and presenting, and writing) are combined with the values of qaulan sadida (truthful speech), qaulan ma'rufa (good speech), and qaulan layyina (gentle speech). The research findings show that this learning technique not only improves language skills but also develops communication ethics and learners' character in an Islamic social environment. The role of the teacher as a model of civilized communication proved important in increasing learners' awareness and habituation to polite behavior in the classroom and at home. Thus, the integration of Islamic values into Indonesian language learning strengthens character building in line with religious teachings.Fenomena menurunnya kesantunan berkomunikasi peserta didik sekolah dasar menunjukkan pentingnya strategi pembelajaran berbasis nilai.

Abstract

Many university students continue to struggle with academic writing, albeit they have passed the supporting courses of language content and skills. Such a condition becomes paradoxical as the subjects of this research, the 7th-semester students of the English Education Department at UIN Salatiga in the academic year 2025, experience similar phenomena. The students encounter issues in all stages of academic writing, especially during the inventing stage, in which they have to understand the topic, brainstorm ideas, and develop an outline before continuing to the next stages of drafting, revising, and editing. The inventing stage becomes the focus, as it defines and directs the global aspect in writing before they can develop their ideas. This research tries to understand the students’ challenges during the inventing stage of academic writing, and simultaneously concludes their strategies in negotiating those issues. From the Focus Group Discussion with 144 students, the researcher found that students encounter several challenges during the process of writing in the inventing stages in the areas of self-efficacy and motivation, understanding assignments and topics, brainstorming and idea generation, and developing an outline and forming a working thesis. To respond those challenges, the students develop strategies such as formulating motivation and support, finding reference, free listing ideas, and making a mind map. This analysis can contribute to the practical knowledge for further discussion and support the improvement of academic writing in higher education.
