Abstract

This study aims to find out the kinds of translation techniques applied in the translation of The Broken Ear comic and how the loss and gain occur. The theory applied was Molina, and Albir's translation strategies (2002) and the concept of loss and gain from Nida’s was also applied in this study. The data of this study were taken from comic entitled The Broken Ear. In collecting the data, the researcher used the observation method by reading, taking note, and classifying the data based on the theories used. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. There are ten types of translation techniques within the highest number was modulation 21, 21% (7 data) and the linguistic compression 21,21% (7). Then, it is followed by amplification that takes 12,12% (4 data), borrowing takes 6,06% (2 data), literal translation takes 3,03% (1 data), calque takes 6,06% ( 2 data), discursive creation takes 6,06% (2), reduction takes 18,18% (6 data). The last lowest percentages occurred were particularization 3, 03% (1), and adaptation 3, 03% (1 data) techniques. Of 33 data in the form of comic, loss of information occurs in the highest percentage, that is 84, 84% (28 data) and the lowest was gain of information takes 15, 15% (5 data).

Abstract

This study aims to find various types of conflict faced by the main character and the source of the conflict to analyze how the main character's strategy in resolving the conflict is. The data of this research is taken from the novel Brave the Wild Wind. This study focuses more on explaining personal conflicts and cultural conflicts that have been carried out by the main character. The presentation and description of the analyzed characters consist of conflict sources and conflict solutions. The results of this study indicate that the main character faces three conflicts, namely personal, cultural, and social conflicts. Sources of conflict from the main character are wrong perceptions with other parties, inappropriate goals, and undirected relationships. The solutions used by the main character to resolve conflicts are creativity, integration, approach, and cooperation.

Abstract

Language is one of the most important skills people use to interact with other people since people need communication in daily life. Nowadays in helping people to understand language, there are a lot of studies that discuss the language itself. Speech acts are one of the studies that help people to understand language. This study aims to find out types of illocutionary acts as well as their intended meaning. The data were taken from a movie entitled Cars 2. The data were collected by observation method and note taking technique by classifying data based on types of illocutionary acts. The collected data were analysed by descriptive qualitative method by using theory proposed by Yule (1996) and Halliday (1989) to analyse the types and the intended meaning of illocutionary acts uttered by all characters in Cars 2 movie. The finding shows that all types of illocutionary acts found in the movie, they are representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declaration. The utterances have both explicit and implicit meaning. The implied meaning can be discovered by understanding the context of the situation in that story.

Abstract

According to Yule (1996: 47), expressives are utterances by speakers that express their mental state, they categorize psychological states and can be in the form of statements of pleasure, pain, dislike, joy and sorrow. This study concerns the expressive illocutionary act used in the After movie. The aim of this study is to analyze the types of expressive illocutionary acts and the context of the situation. This study used a qualitative method to analyze the data and documentation method used in collecting the data found in the movie. The data were taken from the After movie. Based on Searle (1967) and Yule (1962) theory about the types of expressive illocutionary act and supported by theory context of the situation by Halliday and Hasan (1985).

Abstract

Moral values are concepts that serve as a guideline on implementing our manners, personalities, and behaviors toward ourselves and others. The movie is one of the best platforms to deliver moral values, it makes this study needed because it was found a lot of movie’s viewers only focused on fun things that existed in the movie than focused on the moral messages conveyed in it. The aim of this study is to tell the readers what moral values are, and the types of moral values, and help people in recognizing moral values that appear in the movie. This study used a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data and a documentation method used in collecting the data. As a result, there were eleven types of moral values that appeared in Yesterday movie, consisting of honesty, bravery, peace ability, confidence, purity & pureness, loyalty, respect, love & affection, sensitivity & selflessness, kind & friendly, and fair & humane. This finding shows that this comedy movie has many moral values to present.

Abstract

People usually do imitation of an object such as animals, engine, or other object which produces sounds. This is to emphasizes the words, sentences, or utterances. It also helps to visualize the thing or object being discussed. This such imitation is called Onomatopoeia. This kind of word may appear in a written text, such as comic. This study aims to analyze the fighting type of onomatopoeic words in a comic entitled Superman: The Doomsday wars comic This study used theory that proposed by Elizabeth (2013) to identify the fighting types of Onomatopoeia found in Superman: The Doomsday wars comic. The data were collected by using observation method and note taking techniques. This study is a qualitative method and presented the analysis descriptively. The result of the study shows 29 data fighting types of onomatopoeia that found in Superman: The Doomsday Wars comic. This is because the story of this comic is about a battle between Superman and his Enemy, Doomsday.

Abstract

Figurative language is way communication to convey the speaker’s through with meaningful sentences. The purpose of this study is to find the type of figurative language contained in the lyrics of Justin Bieber's song from Purpose Album. In analyzing the data qualitative and descriptive methods are used. The theory used in this research is Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) to analyze the types of figurative language. According to him there are ten types of figurative language such as: simile, personification, metaphor, synecdoche, allusion, dead metaphor, metonymy, hyperbole, paradox, and the last is irony. From the ten types of figurative language, there are six types found in Justin Bieber's songs in Purpose Album, there are: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, synecdoche, and metonymy. The most type used in this research is simile and hyperbole.

Abstract

This research discussed about the classification of illocutionary acts found in Kathy Buckley’s Stand Up Comedy Videos. There are two problems that found in this research; first, to describe the types of illocutionary acts and second, to find out about the meaning behind the utterances. The data analysed using qualitative method. The data collected by watching some of Kathy Buckley’s stand-up comedy videos on YouTube, taking note the data that possibly contain illocutionary acts, classifying the data into types of illocutionary acts and classifying the data into types of meaning. This research used theory by Searle (1979) and theory by Leech (1981). The data source of this research was taken from Kathy Buckley Stand Up Comedy Videos found on YouTube. Moreover this research found the five types of illocutionary act, its describe as following: There are 55% data of Representative, 28% of Directive Illocutionary Acts, 3% Commissive, 11% of expressive and 3% Declarative.

Abstract

Advertisement is "an announcement or news online, or in a newspaper, on television, or on a poster about something such as a product, event, or job to persuade and encourage people to be interested in the goods or services offered". Verbal and nonverbal are communication tools that humans use to interact, whether it's through messages, sounds, pictures, and gestures. . This study aims to analyse the verbal and non-verbal signs used in travel advertisements and to find out the meaning of those signs. Travel advertisements aim to promote tourist attractions or destinations to tourists who are going to make a trip to Bali. The data were taken from several travel websites. The data were collected by observation method and then analysed by descriptive qualitative method. The analysis started by analysing the verbal and non-verbal signs based on the theory of semiotic by Saussure (1893). The analysis of the meaning of the verbal and non-verbal signs was done by using the theory of meaning proposed by Barthes (1977). And the analysis of colors was done by using the theory of color term proposed by Wierzbicka (1996). The result of the research shows that travel advertisements provide information for readers or tourists who are going to travel in Bali about interesting places to visit, such as romantic spots for dinner or honeymoon and natural view for the ones who love nature and adventure. The colors displayed in the advertisement express the atmosphere that will be obtained by readers or tourists. The advertisements promote Bali as wonderful place to visit and travel package offers which interesting and affordable.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the type of slang and social factors that influence the slang spoken by the main character in the movie Senior Year. The data were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods using theories from Allan and Burridge (2006) to identify the types of slang found and Holmes (2013) used in analyzing the social factors that influence the slang used. The data were collected through observation method. The results showed that there are 8 or 36,4% for fresh and creative, 4 or 18,3% for clipping, 4 or 18,2% for imitative, 3 or 13,6% for flippant, and 3 or 13,6% for acronym. It is shown that the highest percentage of types of slang is fresh and creative, which is 36,4%. In analyzing the data, the researcher found that the social factors influenced the slang utterances. Participants influence the slang spoken to another people, function influence the goal of the slang, setting influence the place and situation of the slang used, and topic influence the main point of the conversation.
