Abstract

Potency of Medicinal and Aromatic Crop Extracts to control Golden SnailResearch aimed to evaluate potency of some medicinal and aromatic plants as raw materials of molluscicides to control the golden snail has been done in the En-tomological Laboratory of Medicinal and Aromatic Crops Research Institute, Bogor, Indonesia from February to October 2008. The study used factorial ith rando-mized block design basis. The first factor is three levels dipping time of 5, 10, and 20 hours. The second factor is 14 kinds of extracts to be tested i.e. extracts of clove, the crown of god, seraiwangi, turmeric, physic nut, pig nut, legundi, chili java, ba-badotan, brotowali, bitter, kenikir, noni, and rerak. Research initially conducted by dissolving 5% tween 80 in water. After that into the 1 l of solution is placed 5 g of extract to be tested so that the concen-tration of extract in the solution to be tested is 0.5%. After that the snails were put into the solution and were fed with ta-ro leaf (Colocasia giganteum). In the con-trol treatment the snail only be soaked in water containing 5% tween 80. Soaking performed for 5, 10, and 20 hours in glass jars 9 x 15 cm2 diameter. After soaking snails then were transferred into the bottle containing clean water and then given a taro leaf size ~100 cm2 as food. Each tre-atment used 10 snails and repeated 3 times. Observations were made at 1, 2, and 3 days after application of the golden snail mortality by counting the number of snails that died after treatment and of inhibition of eating by noting the eaten leaf area. The results showed that the clove, the crown of god, Cintronella oil, and tur-meric are the most effective extract with 100% mortality rate and percentage of >90% inhibition of eating. Among the plants tested, clove most prospective to be developed as a controlling golden snail due to its high yield and the most immediate cause of death of the snail test.

Abstract

Introduction: Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) has been demonstrated to accelerate wound healing. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and collagen have an important role in wound healing. However, the effect of MSC on levels of PDGF and number of collagen has not been established. Objectives: To determine the effect of MSC on the levels of PDGF and the percentage of collagen in the burns healing. Methods: in this experimental study, 20 BALB /c mice were divided into 4 groups: a control group (G-0) injected with 2 ml of distilled water and group 1 (G-1), Group 2 (G-2), and group 3 (G- 3) injected with MSC at the dose of 1 x 104, 2 x 104, and 4 x 104 respectively. The burn wound was made by attaching a metal nail that had been heated for 20 seconds at the feet of mice. Levels of PDGF on day 2 (PDGF-2) and 7 (PDGF-7) was assessed by ELISA, while on day 10 excision of skin was done to calculate the percentage of collagen. Results: There was a significant difference in the levels of PDGF-2, PDGF-7, and the percentage of collagen ( P <0.05). Posthoc analysis showed that the levels of PDGF-2, PDGF-7, and percentage of collagen in the G-2 and G-3 was significantly higher than that of G-0, p <0.05. While the levels of PDGF-2, PDGF-7, and the percentage of collagen in the G-3 was significantly higher than that of G-2 and G-1 (p <0.05). Conclusion: Injection of MSC at a dose of 2 x 1044 and 4 x 1044 increases the levels of PDGF and the percentage of collagen.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to explore the implementation of democracy and its development. The term democracy, when viewed from an etymological point of view, comes from the words demos (people) and cratein (to rule). Thus, democracy means government by the people, which in its further development, as we saw in the Declaration of Independence, is "of the people for the people and by the people". In other words, democracy means government from the people, for the people, and by the people. The development of a democratic government system does not only concern the political system but also the economy and global issues from only the political sphere to the sphere of social and economic life. Therefore, the discussion of the concepts of freedom and equality in democracy includes the concept of how democracy can be developed and practically can be realized. Although the democratic government system contains elements of strengths and weaknesses, it also contains weaknesses caused by, 1) In a democratic system where the majority wins, a compromise between several views is often sought. The weakness is that a compromise is difficult to find so the government is hampered in carrying out its duties; 2) It may occur that the resulting decision is not the best one, it may only be reached by an intermediate decision (mediocre); 3) Political figures can become thirsty for power and personal gain. This means they seek individual interests or group interests and the interests of the people are neglected; 4) In this democratic system each group (party) seeks as many supporters as possible to be able to influence government decisions. There can be fraud and intimidation to play a role in election campaigns. Even though there are weaknesses in the democratic system of government, this system must be rated as the best at this time. This is because, in a democratic system, the will of the people is obeyed as much as possible.

Abstract

In teaching and learning activities, educators are still not optimal in applying problem-based methods. Critical thinking is needed to find a way out of these problems regarding students' responses to teachers. Critical thinking is analyzing problems in an idea to find solutions. Five indicators of critical thinking namely: analyzing problems, being able to ask and answer questions, solving problems, making conclusions, and evaluating or assessing observation results. This literature review discusses the impact of implementing a problem-based learning model on elementary school students' critical thinking skills in learning citizenship education. This problem-based learning model is proven to be able to improve student's critical thinking skills, be able to present problem orientation for students so they can understand learning objectives and solve problems, organize students in group discussions, guide group investigations so they can look for problems that are presented, develop and present work results so that Students can prepare reports on discussion results, analyze and evaluate the problem-solving process so that teachers and students can evaluate the problem-solving process in learning. Critical thinking is seen as essential and developed in schools so that students are accustomed to dealing with various problems around them.
